Among all the good reasons for going to sea, some things annoy me royally. They include:

Those on the breakfast line on the lido deck who will insist on picking up the buns, squeezing them and putting them back in the basket.

The dilly bars in the same lineup who will insist in dithering around, poking at things and generally holding up the line while my bacon and eggs get cold.

Having started to ruin my day, they then insist on trying to pour 4 to 5 cups of coffee at the dispenser while stopping frequently to hold a conversation with someone else. I usually decide to come back later.

Anyone else encounter this or have other pet peeves about things that only seem to occur while on a cruise vacation?

Topgun, you certainly painted a familiar picture of the 'bun sqeezers' etc. At first i thought you were referring to anatomical buns and so that peeked my interest.Since cruisers are a cross section of the general public, and with a selection of different cultures we can expect things that annoy us but on the whole the pros far outweigh the cons.
It never fails to amaze me that my wife and i who are early risers go for a walk around the deck at breakfast time always see some 'poolside' snoozers.Surely these folks have just had a sleep only to get up and go back to sleep and it always seems to be the same folks.
I put people into categories during 'at sea 'days....
Which catergory are you?
1- Pool people... always doing something around the pool.
2- Readers ..sometimes at the pool but you find them in a quiet spot with the lifeboat deck being a favorite place.
3-Bar people..frequent the bars if not at poolside then everywhere else.
4-Posers..they prance wherever they will draw attention to themselves.
5-The gamblers ...a combination of all of the other categories ...ha ha.
6-The complainers-will never be happy even if they won a million bucks.
7-The fun bunch..always a group who make every minute a laugh and are just great to watch.
So if anyone else can add to this it should make for additional comments and remind us of what we encounter during our time aboard.

Yes Topgun
I really hate the professional moaners who appear on the last day of cruises complaining about everything and trying to get their money refunded. (These usually are the ones who have got everything at rock bottom prices and so usually haven't got the nicest cabins.)

You guys should check out te most recent edition of PORTHOLE where they list the different types of pax you find onboard...it's hilarious - and too true:

They are:
1) The Ship Buff - knows all his stats
2) The First Timer - they do everything onboard
3) The Attracted Opposites - WHY are they together?
4) The Perfect Pair - everything matches/ co-ordinates
5) The Cruise Addict - lists EVRY cruise they've been on
6) The Guzzler - starts w/ drinks at 8am and finishes the next day at the same time
7) The Gay Couple - the nice guys who always sit w/ the single girls
8) The Glutton - I paid for it so I'm gonna eat it
9) The Single Man - competes w/ officers for the girls
10) The Single Woman - finds the love of her life onboard - and he finds a new one every cruise
11) The Sun Worshippers - self explanatory

Just thought it was another fun way of looking at the diversity on cruises - I know we always have nicknames for people by the time we come back from a cruise!

And some of them are our best friends now! but we know them by their nicks when cahtting...

How about the ship's "character?" We've noticed one on every cruise. There was the 80 year old guy in the skimpy Speedo, the old Floridian with the permanent tan who posed in the same spot every day on the upper sun deck with his thong bathing suit and ton of gold chains, then "Shirley" who came alone (her husband refused to go at the last minute) and she made up for it by getting plastered, constantly. Another different "Shirley" who ordered (and insisted she could have) 17 orders of bagels and lox. Poor waiter! What he put up with from her! Last cruise the talk of the ship was the honeymooners who starting fighting the minute they got aboard and finally left mid-cruise. There always has to be one big-mouth who wants to be the center of attention at each and every show heckling the comedians. She also seems to usually end up with the raffle prize at the port talks. By and large though, we don't complain. We've made lifelong friends on cruises, and met a lot of really fun and interesting people. But there always are the ones that stand out.

On the Delta Queen boats there is another category of passenger. The crew and office calls them F.R.R.'s. I'm told that it means Frendly River Rats, but I'm not too sure about that!

Some of the F.F.R.'s have made nearly 100 or more steamboat cruises. I know 'cause I just finished my 89th.

I wait with great interest for my cruise,to see all of the above. I don't quite know where to put myself in this line up. I tend to be a professional people watcher, so I am sure that I will be able to find a few of each catergory. We tend to make up whole stories about people, rather than just give nick names. You should hear the one about the.....!

Great Topic - Topgun - your're in top form. Yes, the Topic heading also peeked my interest also. I just like to sit and watch all of the above people.
Jekyll - I remember a couple from Sun City Retirement village in Arizona, who wore matching clothes right down to the socks. This was hillarious and we looked forward each day to see what different outfits they would have on. They thought they were pretty nifty. Maybe by having matching outfits they could find each other easier.

O.K. everyone fess up, what Catagory are you?
I guess I would be a combo of a lot of them. A sun worshiper, swimmer, book reader, gambler, show watcher, cruise addict, and I like one Strawberry Margarita each day. I MOST of the time get along with my hubby. I thankfully am NOT a complainer and are very annoyed by them. Unless their cabin is flooded and the crew won't move them to another one. I saw that happen before. They had a reason to be put out! (Sprinkler went off in the cabin) I am amazed we all get along as well as we do on the ship

I also fall into the people watcher catagory and one group that hasn't been mentioned yet are the paunchy balding guys in their late 50s to 70s with their 30 year old trophy brides. There are always a few on every cruise and I love hearing them get indignant when the waiter says on the first night out "and what will your daughter have for dinner, sir?"

By the way, the trophy bridge is invariably razor thin, darkly tanned and has blonde hair...

browsing today and caught up with this fun topic - guess I'm a people watcher. 'Squeezers and ditherers' I try to avoid at all cost.

Anyone encountered 'table hoggers'? - always a table for 4 - the hogger spreads books, jacket, towels etc. Anyone approaching is told, "my friends are just coming". We had two on our last cruise - a smoker and a non smoker - middle-aged twins whose respective families gave them the cruise (twin cabin) as a birthday present! They couldn't stand each other so one sat Port, the other Starboard.

I have encountered two not mentioned above:
a. Group of four on a ship with open seating at all meals who decide that a certain table is "theirs" and get most upset if anyone else sits at it.
b. Virulent anti-semites who will give me their back for an entire meal if by some misfortune we are seated together.

99% of people I have met on ships are delightful and geat fun!

Think those types are worse than 'squeezers'.
