First off, as everyone else has been stating on the various posts since the tragedy of September 11th, my heart, prayers and thoughts go out to all the families, relatives and friends of the victims of this senseless and barbaric act. I certainly hope that when it's determined who was responsible for this (and I think it's a foregone conclusion who is...right Mr Bin Laden?)...that retrobution is swift, deadly and 10 times the magnitude as what that monster perpitrated on us!!

Secondly, as all of you can see from my profile, I'm from the Boston, Ma area. I am suppose to leave in less than 2 weeks for a cruise my wife and I have been planning and dreaming about for more than a year (Carnival Spirit, Vancouver to Hawaii). My problem (and I refuse to let my wife know this as she's freaked out enough) is I don't know if I can (or want to?) get on that plane in 12 days.

I'm sure part of the reasoning behind my fear and apprehesion is because 2 of the highjacked planes originated right in my own backyard and because my flight out of Logan is exactly like the type of plane they wanted (fully fueled, non-stop to Vancouver, BC), but as with the rest of the world....I can't let these animals do this to my wife and I!!! If I give in to my fears they win, right??

This is where I'm looking for everyone's help and reassurance. I'm sure there are alot more of you out there that are as apprehensive as I am...who may have a cruise coming up very soon that just doesn't feel as good to you as it did before September 11th.

Let's talk about it...our fears, our apprehensions. Let's hear some reassurances and words of encouragement from those long time traveling veterans who've been posting on the site for a long time.

I know how much reading everyone's thoughts, prayers and well-wishes for our country has done for me so far. Hearing some words of encouragement to get on that plane, go have a great time on that cruise and how safe everything will be will go a long way towards mending my mental state of mind.

I hope I am not thought of as selfish because of my request. I am really just scared and not afraid to show it (except in front of my wife).

Thanks in advance to everyone

You have every right for your concerns and fears and my prayers are for all of us and especially those who will be flying soon. This has been so tragic and so totally unexpected. You see one plane being taken over, but not four and then to have them be used in such a horrible way, it is just to much for us to except. All we can do is pray that this never happens again and that everything is done by our airports to see that security is gone over and for us all to remain calm and try to go on with our lives as before. They just announced on T.V. that all persons going to airports should be there 2 hours before their flights because of security, no curbside check in, no going straight to the gates and I am sure that Boston will be watched even more that some. God Bless You and your wife, and I hope you can enjoy your trip.

Billy,

A lot of people say that the safest time to fly is just after an accident. You can be rest assured that security will be extremely tight in view of what happened last Tuesday. We just cant take the chance of it happening again.

I'm also flying in a couple of weeks time and, although I'm apprehensive, there is no way I am going to cancel. I have just looked at the airline's site and seen that they are not allowing hand luggage. This shows how seriously we are taking it this side of the pond.

As someone who has lived in London for 28 years and have seen at first hand some of the IRA's handiwork I think that the last thing you should do is let them spoil your plans.

Go on your cruise. Enjoy yourself. i am sure you will have a super time.

Nigel.

First, don't ever think that your fears are unjustified. I think we are all afraid of what could happen, especially in the next few weeks.

I'm sure that in 2 weeks security will be a lot tighter all over the country, especially in Boston. However, you might consider driving to another airport. You could even stagger your flights, so that you aren't flying cross country in one flight. These suggestions are more for peace of mind than anything else.

Don't give in to terrorism. We know how much you have been looking forward to this cruise, and we are looking forward to your review.

The apprehension you are feeling now is the same feeling I have every time I have boarded a plane. Believe me it's no fun, is it?

Never make fun of one who struggles to fly.

I have heard of parents who do not take the same plane when they travel away from their children. (so in event of fatalities, the kids will not be orphaned)I also used to think maybe this was needlessly paranoid. Not so anymore.

I have travelled to Egypt, Israel, Indonesia and Malaysia during crisis times.

I never have felt safer with armed soldiers patrolling the streets, rail stations, and back alleys plus no one f*cks up since they shoot first and ask questions later.

One is more likely to get T-boned by a SUV and killed going to the mall than by travelling by air or ship.

Chances of ketting killed by plane are 1 in 4 million, cruise ship: 3 passengers that I know of in 10 years: Achille Lauro.

On a ship one is more likely to get financially wiped out at the casino or pickpocketed in a Carribean tourist trap.

I saw the WTC burn in person from Newark New Jersey.

At the age of 10, I was on the Queen Anna Maria; now Topaz in NY Harbor seeing the WTC under construction. I may post the picture of me and the towers half built.

We should not be intimidated by terrorists and sensationalism.

billybob - There's no shame in being afraid and admitting it - giving in to that fear is exactly what those terrorists hope for. They must be identified and dealt with

Board that plane and join your cruise.

Happy cruisin'

God Bless -

If you remember I will be on the same trip with you on the Spirit. I will be flying out of Baltimore/Washington just about the same distance and as you wrote me back before I hope to meet you and I will buy you and your wife a beer. We are all in this together and it is not anything to be ashamed of to have fear. But we are Americans and we do not give up. See you on board.

Thank you all so very much for your kind words of encouragement. They mean a lot to me as I read them!!

As I write this, I'm looking over at our luggage layed out across the living room as my wife and I started our "preliminary" packing for our trip. My mood is starting to brighten...our anticipation and excitment for our trip is returning!

I WILL GET ON THAT PLANE
I WILL GET ON THAT CRUISE SHIP
AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE ONE HELLUVA TIME!!!

lgw.....I hope to meet you as well. How about 2nd night on board, in the Sports Bar?I'll have on some type of Boston sports team's shirt on.

Thanks again to all. I won't forget to submit a review.

I hope we don't enter war. If my country is in a war, I would consider staying in Canada or Britian for the summer or winter for safety reasons.

My hometown, Houston is a terrorist target because of the Space and Oil Industries. I certainly would not wanna be on a hijacked Continental Boeing 777 heading for the Chase Tower, Williams Tower, Johnson Space Center, or those petrochemical plants.

Jesse, you would not want to be in Britain. Any retaliation by the US on Afghanistan would most likely be orchestrated from the bases in the UK, as in previous 'confrontations'. Which is why in the UK we do not want any rash decisions made, as we will be in it as much as you.

The other day 2 heavy refuelling tanker aircraft took off from the local base, we thought something was up, but thankfully, it wasn't.

I think, the US Government has to fix the Responsibles and Supporters BEFORE the Strike-back.

Bombing complete Countries and Cities is an other Crime!

If they are sure, where the searched People are and who they are, it is Time to kill them...

Our Government will help too, if it is asked. Only the Communist Party (PDS) votes against Help or join the War...

Better you should stay where you are - Canada would not be a safe haven.

As Pam said, the UK and Canada are with the States - we just want to know as accurately as possible who we're fighting........decisions must be made with the head in this situation.

Courageous. Dignified. Righteous. Brave.

As Americans we are all of those.

We are not pushed around. History proves this. We stand for Freedom. Freedom to live, work, worship, play and travel.

We absolutely will not allow anyone to take these Freedoms away from us.

So you must not.

If I had reason to travel tomorrow, I would go. Absolutely.

You will be fine. It is o.k. to be afraid, but do not show your fear. Hold your head up high and smile as you board that plane... because you are a proud citizen of the United States of America.

And have a wonderful time on the cruise of a lifetime. I wish I was going with you.

Peace be with you.

Billybob, we are flying out of Logan on our cruise in November. We sent in the final payment the Monday before Terrible Tuesday and I had the travel agent hold onto it for a few days before she forwarded it to RCI. Last Friday I told her to go ahead with sending it in. Our economy is going to suffer because of people cancelling vacations, but that is not the reason we are going. I truly feel that security will be tightened to the limit by this week. I only wish they could bring some people over here from Israel to show our airport personal how to "do it." All these past thirty years the Israelis have lived in immediate terror and never a hijacked airplane. They know how to provide protection to the passengers. We got soft and lazy here, especially Logan.

Billybob: My husband and I just flew home yesterday from our trans-Atlantic cruise. We were originally scheduled to leave from JFK but obviously our ship was not allowed into New York harbor and our flight was to be from JFK. We were re-routed to Boston and decided to fly home (to San Francisco) from Boston, thinking it was a toss-up as to the security of each airport, Boston or New York.
We decided on Boston, since we were ther anyway--security at Logan is incredible! I now know what a Uzi looks like. All of Boston, in fact, is incredible with all the flags--we felt very safe walking about and didn't mind the early check-in.
Be sure to pack your Swiss army knife, nail files and clippers and razor blades in your checked luggage or they will be confiscated. All in all, we felt safer departing from Boston than we have felt in years--and fortunately the flight was pleasantly uneventful.
I wish you a happy cruise and an peaceful flight. You should be proud to be a Bostonian; your city was a welcome sight.

I can empathize with you. My wife and I, sister-in-law and husand are cruising the Zenith Oct. 27th. The ship originally was scheduled to sail from NYC, but has been moved to Baltimore. My wife and I are "seasoned" cruisers and have flown numerous times, but our "in-laws" haven't done either. Their fear level was high before the NYC tragedy, and borders on hysteria now. I'm having trouble convincing them not to cancel, but I'm still not sure they will go.
My wife and I are certainly going, even though we are somewhat apprehensive. We refuse to allow homicidal maniacs to control our lives. Yes, we know there's a risk, but life MUSTgo on and we MUST NOT ALLOW tyrants to succeed. They have toppled buildings, but they have raised American resolve and patriotism to a peak. Take your cruise, enjoy life, but remember those who sacrificed to give us freedom.

Regards...Bob ,A very proud American
