This question is two fold:

1) on the above website, there were pictures of her final breakup - does anyone know where I should be looking - or have they been removed?

2) this is an incredibly comprehensive website with so much detail and great finds...does anyone know of any other websites that are similar to this? Esp it is for ships like ss France, QE2, United States, original Oriana etc.

Thanks, as always.

1) They are there under

Gadani Beach in the image galleries.

2) Just been looking at a homepage for SS Australis , there are quite a few interesting sites in the links section there.

That has to be the saddest group of pictures I have seen in a long time...the indignity of it all, but I suppose it is necessary. Still it seems to be a very ungracious way to die.

Pam M:

Thanks!!! I couldn't remember where they were. They are truly sad pics I agree...but morbidly fascinating at the same time.

Thankfully it seems most great liners sink before they get to the breaking yards...maybe there is some cosmic dignity out there...

The philistine and bone-headed P&O execs who sent her to the scrap heap should be punished by working the chain gang at Ghadani Beach or Alang breaking up the ships.

Conditions are hazardous and brutal at best. Let them live in the open sewer shanty towns nearby.

Yup! How could they replace the beautiful Canberra with a floating box like Oriana... Canberra would have been so easy to re build as a modern cruise ship!

I don't know how easy it would have been, but you can bet that it would have proved very expensive?

I understand that many of the Canberra's cabins were small and lacking private bathrooms. Then there is the SOLAS regulations which are increasingly tough for aging ships to conform too.

I hate to see classic ships scrapped too, but it's a financial fact of life. After all what do we do when our cars get old? Take out a mortgage to keep them road worthy, or say 'goodbye?'

P&O don't seem to worry too much about nostalgia - they just keep on moving forward. The newbuild Oriana was designed to provide a Canberra 'feel' and capture the her many loyal passengers. She does seem to be very popular?

Malcom,

You're correct, refitting the Caberra would have been an expensive endeavour indeed. Not only would they have to had completely gutted her interiors, but anyone that sailed her close to the end (as I did) will tell you that the ship was rotting away. No, she wasn't falling apart but after 27 years of very hard service, decks were rotting, she was experiencing elecrtical and plumbing problems and was rife with mechanical problems.

She was indeed quite a charming ship, but it was clearly evident why she was being retired and I think the P&O execs made the correct decison. The ship had a gallant and exciting career and her time had come and gone. Sailing her was one of the highlights of my life; an experience I shall never forget. But old ships cant go on forever.

Tim
