Crew members became suspicious of the passengers after they were seen leaving and reboarding the ship several times, said Jennifer de la Cruz, a Carnival spokeswoman. The cruise line gives passengers and employees electronic cards that need to be read electronically each time someone boards or leaves the vessel, she said.
``It tracks the comings and goings of all guests and crew members,'' de la Cruz said. ``When some of the personnel saw them repeatedly getting on and off the vessel, we looked at their boarding entries and exits and, indeed, they had come on and off the ship several times, which is very unusual.''
Crew members learned that each time the passengers left, they came back with bees, she said. ``They were in bottles and they maintained that they were intending to use the bees for medicinal reasons.''
De la Cruz said the passengers had managed to bring 160 bees on board before they were stopped. The six passengers were left on land as the ship set sail with close to 3,000 other passengers, de la Cruz said. Among them: a New York nurse who called her mother in Long Island about the bee delay at 6:30 p.m.
She said, `Mom, I'm on the ship. But we haven't set sail yet. There are some issues, some issues with bees,' '' Bonnie Holvmacher said. Naturally, Holvmacher -- who said she was nervous about her daughter's trip because of travel anxiety from Sept. 11 -- was concerned.
De la Cruz said she did not know the nationality of the six passengers who were bringing bees, though she said they did present U.S. passports. ``We took the six passengers off to err on the side of caution while we further investigated what they were up to,'' de la Cruz said.
Carnival is not alone in conducting an investigation. The National Guard went aboard as did the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and state wildlife and agriculture agents. De la Cruz could not say Sunday night if the six passengers taken off the ship would be accommodated on a later cruise. Without the bees.
I recall that a few years ago cruise ship passengers were attacked onboard by bees. I think that the bees had made a next on a mast?
