Liner fan and photographer, Richard Weiss, from Michigan, took two great photos as the SS NORWAY sailed from New York on September 5th, 2001.

He photographed the Norway from Manhattan and from the Jersey side of the river as she sailed away from New York with the skyline* in the background. Of course only a few days later, when the Norway was mid Atlantic, the tragedy was to occur.

I was lucky enough to be aboard for this memorable sailing. Can't you see me on the deck?

(*I appreciate that the picture of the NY Skyline may be distressing for some people, but I think that it is an image with great historical importance).

Great pictures! I could see you and Mrs. M. waving on the deck.

As an American and a proud resident of NY state (I am up close to Lake Ontario, not near the City), I feel that the Twin Towers are a part of history and they should be remembered, not "edited" out.

Lest we forget..........

Well said Ruth Perk, I couldn't agree more, I am sure it hurts a lot of people to now see the Twin Towers but we should not hide them away we should look at them in photos and never forget what happened.

Cheers

Having been on this voyage, seeing these pics takes me back on board. Just 6 days before the world stopped turning and just minutes after the Norway collided with the adjacent pier while backing into the river.

What a day and what a transatlantic crossing.

Nice to see you have posted here Renegade4 (see Subject: Where have all the oldies gone). To think I may have seen you in person whilst standing on the pier at Greenock, Scotland.

Yes it was very special to see Norway in the Clyde, I enjoyed it so much and I wasn't even on the ship.

Cheers
M.

Wonderful photos and sad as
well. Who knew we would'nt
ever see the skyline in NYC
change the way it did.
I put the photos in my favorites file. I'll have my
printer up and running sometime next week and that
will be one of the first things I print.
Thank you for posting them.
My husband's nephews and their wives knew all of the
firefighters and most of the
brave police officers who went in and never got out.
It's very distressing. One nephew went to school with
firefighter Timmy Stackpole,
said he was a nice guy.
9/11/01, terror and sadness.

Hi all!

Still the photos of this cruise appear. These are superb and the one at the bridge a real treat. Thank you for obtaining them

We have actually had a group of NYPD officers over here in Manchester England this week which adds a little more poignancy to the departure picture. I wish I had spotted it earlier as it would have been nice to show them a reminder of home and the reason why there are now even stronger bonds between us as there was a group of Manchester officers in the city that dreadful day.

Regards to KK and Renegade

Frank

The photo above is again the SS Norway, in September 01, leaving NY, via the Hudson river.

I found it on the web. I think the image is from a web-cam on one top of one of the tall buildings? Maybe even the Trade Centre, itself?

You can clearly see how the smoke now comes out the top of the stacks. Originally it used to exist via the wings on the stacks i.e from each side of the stacks, not the tops!

Glad you all like the pictures!

Cambodge was nice enough to share the following pictures of Norway in NY during her first life as France.

Cambodge - "It is a November 1972 departure of France for the Carib. We had just returned and were in the riverfront hotel to which I had refered in the Midships lounge. Both photos were taken by my wife and scanned from slides."

"I am the shadowy figure on the left, cinerecording the scene with my Filmo 70DF 16mm movie camera."

Thanks for the great pictures Cambodge.

I enjoy seeing these 'old' photos, nice of people to take the time to dig them out. She looked so much sleeker then, before the added decks.

Yes Pam, I agree. The funnels look too short, now. I'm also told that the two new decks catch the breeze and make her more difficult to berth in a cross-wind?

However, the new decks contain veranda suites which are very popular. Without them on offer, the SS Norway would probably be history by now?

I posted this picture before, but here it is again:
