While it is easy to rhyme off the ugliest and dumbest ship names that are out there - what about the ones that conjure up visions of beauty, hope, inspiration, power or serenity?

Personally, I have always been a fan or Oriana and even Aurora. Oriana evokes a regal and magical time in British history. Aurora something beautiful and magical and somewhat elusive to most.

While we're all bias towards a name becuase of an experience we've had onboard a certain ship - try to keep that aside and come up with the most beautiful name assigned a ship.

I quite like Canivals names! Particulary "Fantasy" and "Triumph" as they conger up some kind of magic and grandeur for me!

I have to agree that both Oriana and Aurora are great names (I am a bit biased though) but others that come to mind are:

Precursor
Narkunda
Chusan
Peninsular
Oriental
Balranald
Barrabool
Ballarat
Verona
Caronia
Lusitania
Mona's Queen
Wonga Wonga
Ossian
Heather Bell
Little Hattie
Kungsholm
Rangitane
Oronsay

to name but a few (all built on the Clyde of course ) - except Oriana and Aurora. I am sure everyone has their favourite ship but it was "names" you were looking for.

Hi...the most aptly named ships I've ever come across were the three sisters of Swedish Transatlantic's Pacific Australia Direct Line. 'PARRALA', 'ALLUNGA" and "DILKARA"...the Sun, the Moon and the Stars in Abo. The Company logo was an Australian snake curled around it's eggs which represented looking after the cargo.
These ships were the first Ro-Ros with a quarter ramp which meant they could use pretty well any dock.

Another thing which made them very interesting to watch was that each was manned by a different company and Nationality..Paralla was Transatlantic, Allunga was Australian National line and the Dilkara was a Brit consortium of Cunard, Ellermans and Blue Star (that was another lovely mix) The Swedes did it with 24 crew, the Brits with 29 (Brit Officers & Gilbert Island crew) and the Aussies with 37 and a lot of union rules and b.s.
They replaced something like 12 normal cargo ships on the Trans Pacific run. Everything was machine handled and they carried their own forklifts, straddles, Mafis etc to avoid delays.

I generally like Carnival's names also. I think Oceanbreeze and Seabreeze are good names. hey doesn anybody know what happens to used names, like Seabreeze after it sunk? can it be used again or does the cruise lines own the names?

Names can get reused. I think Holland America is naming another ship after one that caught fire and sunk.

I guess I am a bit of a romantic in regard to ship's names. I like the visions they inspire.

For example; "Lurline" and "Mariposa" Visions of Hawaian flowers and departures with the "Aloha Tower" in the background as the leis are tossed over the side.

"Polaris" of the Norwegian costal cruises. Beats a more plebeian "North Star" any time.

Yes "Aurora" is good for the same reason.

I dislike pushy names like "emperor, conqueror, soverign, discoverer" etc.

I like the names of the old clippers, "Flying CLoud" comes to mind.

Soon we will have corporate naming rights: viz: "The Fedex Royal Empress," " The Microsoft Emperor," although the name "Enron Golden Fleece" seems not to be available at this time.
Oh well I could go on...
...but I won't

And Joe, could you install a spellchecker? I am sure I goofed several in this posting

I do like the old names of ROC like:

Orpheus
Triton
Odysseus
Neptune
all of them arising from Greek mythology.

P&Os names are also great: Oriana, Aurora

I don't like names like BRB1,2 e.t.c.

My most favorite is and will be ORIANA. I don't
like AURORA [sorry, Mary]. Here are some others
I think are wonderful:
Aquitania, Empress of Britain, Empress of Canada,
Michelangelo, Raffaello, Leonardo da Vinci, Rex,
Flandre, Caronia, Mauretania, Kungsholm, Grips-
holm, Liberte, Cristoforo Colombo.

These bring smiles to my ears, so to say....
