March 13:

It was reported that a minor fire on board DISNEY MAGIC was put out by crew members with no injuries
reported. DISNEY MAGIC was about 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico early Thursday when a fire broke out in the second smoke stack.

The 2,500 passengers were asked to assemble in a main area of the ship with their life jackets
as a safety precaution but the blaze was extinguished within an hour and the ship continued on its scheduled route.

The crew notified the Coast Guard about the incident, but did not require any assistance. One deck of the ship was evacuated, and some passengers were not allowed back into their cabins for a few hours.

No jokes about them being a "Micky Mouse outfit" - please!

I was on the Volendam when this fire happened this past Thursday. The Volendam and Veendam were both very close to the Disney ship and both circled in the area until the problem was handled.

My family and I were on the Disney Magic at the time of the fire. There was smoke throught out deck 8 midship which is where our stateroom was located. The crew started asking certain decks and sections close to the fire to go to their assembly stations. We could not see the fire nor could we see the ships, since we were on the starboard side of the ship and the ships that were there in case assistance was needed were on the port side. We finally saw them when we could return to our rooms. After sometime all staterooms were evacutated and all passengers were asked to go to their assembly stations.

They had to close one of the pools and were were about an hour and a half late getting to our next destination.

All in all the crew did a fantastic job of keeping everyone calm and the passengers did not panic.

I give the Disney Magic crew an A+.

What a "Goofy" ship that would allow that to happen! Quite "Daffy" I think. Oh at least it was only a "Minnie" drama..... oh well "Pooh cares I don't!

Hey steve:

3 out of 4 ain't bad...unfortunately DAFFY is a Warner Brothers Looney Tunes character and not Disney.

Very clever though!

I guess there must have been a Wicked Stepmother at work on this cruise!

There is an unfounded rumour circulating other cruise web sites at the moment, about the minor fire aboard Disney Magic. The rumour is that key crew members might of been delayed from dealing with the fire because they had to get out of their heavy character costumes first!

I am pretty sure that this is NOT true. However it does conjure up some amusing mental images of Mickey, Minnie and Pluto running around with a fire hose!

(Sorry Kids, of course they are real!)

I can tell you that was no "minor" fire on the Magic. The aft port funnel's steel and fibreglass shell was completely melted and burned away. The ship was a mess for two days and the crew was fantastic at putting out the fire and accomodating the passengers. My family and I were aboard and it was quite scary, watching burning debris fly off the ship in the middle of the night, smoke in the corridors and then to be sent to the lifeboat stations fo real. It hasn't put me off cruising, but it was a very anxious few hours and I think that Disney should make some amends to the passengers.

I really think it is a little rude to some to joke about this horrible incident! I am sure that some passengers were really scared! I wouldn't joke about it-you might have something like this happen to you on your next cruise & it might not be a minor thing! Of course, no fire is a minor thing on a cruise ship (or anywhere!)
My husband & I took our first cruise 4/13/2002 on the Carnival Triumph. One morning, during breakfast, our ship was heading in a straight path & it suddenly, without warning, made a sharp right turn. We didn't feel anything because we were still in our cabin getting ready for the day.
Apparantly, there was a freighter coming full steam toward us. As soon as it passed us, it came to a complete stop! Not many people knew about this. Those in charge did a magnificent job!
Things like this are never a joking matter & I hope & PRAY you/we all never have to go thru a fire or ANYTHING that can potentially put our lives in danger!
