Malcolm,
The newly designed Cunard web site came out this past week. The new virtual tour of the QE2 that has been added gives those who have never been aboard a chance to see how truly beautiful she is. So much money has been poured into her over the years to keep her modern that it hard to imagine she has been serving the company for over 30 years! I have read here that many believe she will end her days once QM2 arrives, but friends that work at Cunard here in Miami have recently told me that they have no desire to retire her any time soon. Once QM2 arrives on the Atlantic QE2 will be doing many more cruises than she currently does and only occasional crossings. When cruising her fuel costs come down and her profits rise. Her hull and machinery are all quite sound, in fact she operates with fewer problems than quite a few of the newer ships that have been built recently. There is no ship sailing today in the world that is as famous, or has her class and popularity. All rumors aside, she will be sailing on with Cunard for quite some time.

In 2000, there were some rumours that the QE2 would switch to transpacific service once the QM2 arrives. This seems doubtful, and I expect her to become a full-time cruise ship in 2004. Given her overall excellent mechanical condition and her wounderful interiors (still sparkling from the 1999 refit) I see no reason why the QE2 can't stay in service until 2030 (at which point, her engines will be 45 years old, about normal retirement age for post-WWII ships).

I just visited the British site, it kinda gives the impression that a redesign is in the works. The menu bar along the left-hand side is a new addition. I just wish they would address the lack of information available on the historical fleet feature. For instance, if you search for Cunard ships in service between 1980 and 1990, the CUNARD PRINCESS, CUNARD COUNTESS, and QE2 don't even show up; and the discription of the SEA GODDESS twins ends with "come abord SEA GODDESS I(I) and see where she can take you today" then there is a link to a non-existant page about the SEA GODESS ships- these ships left the fleet in 1999- certainly three years is enough time to correct this error.

Hey Chris, love your site! I especially like the information on the "other" newbuild- the one being built by Fincanteri. She's going to be an extremely beautiful ship herself- its a shame she's being overshadowed so much by the QM2.

Hello,

I've just began looking at the QE2 Virtual tour, but it really looks very good. The old website was "prettier," but not very informative.

Happy Cruising,

There new USA site for me is slow, and seem less friendly too.
