The following is an interesting history of the Cunard fleet, taken from the US web site:

http://www.cunard.com/index.cfm?method=legacy&shipline=sscunard&content=legacy&Lang=us

I've only just discoved it, so I thought that I'd share it!

A poor site not worthy of a company like Cunard.
On the ship list there are many with no descriptions at all...just a name.
Quite frankly, a waste of time, a company Cadet, or even the office-boy could do better.

Peter, I must admit that I have not fully explored it! It looked promissing from a fist glance, but I bow to your judgement.

There are probably better unofficial Cunard sites! Anyone?

Gohaze, did you notice that often times those ship names aren't even correct? For instance "Adventurer" instead of CUNARD ADVENTURER. And while I could forgive a lack of details on some of the older ships (from the 19th and early 20th centuries) I think they could do a bit better on the CUNARD PRINCESS which was in their fleet as recently as 1996. All in all, the history part is the worst feature on the website.

Malcolm,

The University of Liverpool used to have some very interesting Cunard information online in what they called the "Cunard Archives". A couple of years ago they took it down for some reason - maybe the new owners didn't want information available from different sources. Here's a link to what's left.

Malcolm, you know of my web page - Do you think it compares to the official Cunard site?

I tried to create a web page that was both informative, factual and full of pictures. To get the facts, I researched the Cunard ships that are on Chris' Cunard Page by reading the official histories, as well as other information from books I have read. I don't understand the comment Joe made though because Chris' Cunard Page is really quite different from the official Cunard web page.

Oh well I guess you can't impress everyone?

Chris

Hello,

Joe, I don't quite understand your comment... Where does Chris' site contain anything from the official site? In my opinion his is rather more complete on "enthusiast" issues...

Also, has everyone seen the affiliated site, sscanberra.com? It is very interesting, I urge you to take a look...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

I must agree with you on that one. It is one of the best websites I have seen in just about every aspect. The amount of information is astounding. If there was a site like yours on every ship afloat, I don't think I would ever have to worry about being bored! Although usually whenever that happens I just log on here and something is always up to occupy me.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Hello,

By the way, that's not to say your Cunard page is not great, in fact you have the best QE2 pictures I've seen anywhere, but sscanberra.com is unique. No website I've seen anywhere on any ship has information like that. Seriously, you should write a book, a history of the SS Canberra. If it was well-presented (fancy bindings, paper etc.) it could easily be one of those huge $50 slabs of paper that the marketing folks like to call a "coffee-table book." Although I suppose you'd need a rather big coffee table to support yours...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Chris,

I think your site is very nice. I was only referring to the fact that the histories of some of the Cunard ships on your site seem to have been borrowed from the Cunard site.

Chris's overview of Olympic..."The Olympic was launched on 20 October 1910 and made its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 14 June 1911. Later that year, on 20 September, the Olympic was rammed by the cruiser HMS Hawke..."

Cunard's overview of Olympic..."The Olympic was launched on 20 October 1910 and made its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 14 June 1911. Later that year, on 20 September, the Olympic was rammed by the cruiser HMS Hawke...."

No big deal, that happens a lot on the web. Keep up the good work.

Hello,

Chris, you're welcome for the comments. I don't mind handing those out so long as they reflect my actual feelings... Seriously, has the book idea ever occurred to you? I wasn't joking when I said you could turn your site into a coffee table book! I have some here (on other ships) that I paid big $$ for and they don't have any more information than your site! Canberra was a famous ship, and I haven't seen any really good volumes on her. Besides, all the research already seems to be done! Just get the Commodore to write a prologue...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

I take it Chris's site is Chris's Cunard Page? I keep track of all the updates you make to it and think it is brilliant

Just a pointer...

Chris' Cunard Page Overview of Olympic :- "By far the largest ship of her day, White Star Line's Olympic was launched on October 20, 1910 and made her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on June 14 1911. The vessel would compete directly with Cunard's Mauretania, Lusitania, Berengaria and Aquitania for many years. Her first dramatic event occurred early in her career, when on September 20th, the Olympic was rammed by the cruiser HMS Hawke in the Solent which had attempted to pass astern. The smaller vessel hit the Olympic abreast the mainmast, starboard side causing a large hole in the ships side. Olympic went to her builders in Belfast for repairs and was out of action for six weeks. During repairs, the propeller shaft created for Olympic's sister ship, Titanic, was needed for Olympic, thus delaying Titanic's completion."

Cunard's overview of Olympic. :- "The Olympic was launched on 20 October 1910 and made its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 14 June 1911. Later that year, on 20 September, the Olympic was rammed by the cruiser HMS Hawke...."

Maybe you need to clear your history

I also really like www.sscanberra.com Canberra was a lovely lady of the sea.

CruiseNY, I'd like to write a book on Queen Elizabeth 2 some day - the photos on my web page are only a fraction of those which I have and I think I could write a unique version of the ships life - maybe when I am out of University!! I never thought about the whole Cunard Line. Thanks again for the kind comments

Oceania, thanks for the positive comments

While there seem to readily available pictures of the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary Suites..I have ever only seen one picture of the duplex Queen Victoria and Queen Anne Suites (and it was from a rather old brochure and they looked like somehting from the Best Little Whorehouse in Texas)..Chris would happen to have any recent pictures of those to post?

Hello,

No, no, I didn't mean a book on QE2, I meant one on Canberra... That site has so much information on it, I haven't even got through reading it yet. That I think could be a book. Not that you couldn't write one on QE2, Canberra was just what popped into my mind...

CruiseNY

CruiseNY - the Canberra site isn't mine, but I will pass on the idea for a book to Steve - sscanberra.com's creator.

If I ever wrote a book on QE2, I could get Commodore John Burton-Hall R.D. M.N.I to write the prologue. I just received a letter from him today, it is 7 years now that Commodore Burton-Hall and I have been writing to each other.

Jekyll - Best online image I have seen of the Queen Anne suite is from Cunard. I am afraid that I have never been inside the duplex suites... There are some great photos of it in some of the QE2 books out there.

Hello,

Oh, I see, it's not yours... The "affiliated" bit threw me off... Are any of the other sites yours (aside from your Cunard site)? Anyhow, they're all great...
