Anyone go on the first sailing of the new Islands? I would love to know how Royal Caribbean and First Choice have done with the old Viking Serenade

Yes, I was one of the passengers on the first cruise of Island Escape. Let's just say that everyone travelling has been given 50% of their cruise fare back and a free cruise voucher to be used in the next 18 months. I was one of the luckier passengers travelling on a ship that wasn't ready to sail. The entertainment was excellent though!

Hello,

Hmmm... That doesn't sound too good... I am quite honestly not surprised. It seems to me that RCCL is run by set kamikaze managers. I have heard of their "Project Radiance," in which the ship has - hold on to your hats here - two crews. No, this is not a typographical error. They decided, in one of their lapses of common sense, to completely isolate the "operations" people (you know, the captain, engineers, seamen, those unimportant folks) from the rest of the crew - the "service" people (they're the ones in charge of important things like the pillow sweets). It is a ludicrous strategy that has resulted, or so I hear, in rather disastrous service, at least on the first few voyages. This is just one of so many bad decisions made by the bean counters running the place. Moreover, the customer service over at RCCL is pathetic, and the food on my last cruise was nothing short of downright abysmal. I'm sorry to sound so negative, but, well, I don't really have anything good to report... I don't mean this in the sense of the people on the ship - the crew was great, from the captain on down - but unfortunately they have to follow the orders of the home office...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Hello,

From the Cruise News Daily Newsfile:

quote:
Project Radiance totally separates the hotel functions of the ship from the marine side of the ship that sails it. With this separation, you could almost take the hotel staff and put them in a resort on shore and they could be self-sufficient there. Likewise when you take them off the ship to that resort, the marine crew could operate the ship like a cargo ship and never miss them.

Now, does that sound like a good idea to you?

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

MoJo,

Tell us more? What went wrong on the cruise and what was so great about the entertainment? It's rare to hear everything about a cruise was horrible except for the entertainment....!

Hello,

HomeLines, I do agree... More detail would be appreciated... I can tell you that my recent cruise on RCCL was indeed mediocre except for the entertainment (it was very good) and the food (it was very bad). Oh well. I guess it's back to Princess... Speaking of whom, I certainly hope that if that merger goes through, RCCL doesn't have much influence on them .

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY
