In addition to the 150,000 ton QUEEN MARY 2, Cunard also has an 85,000 tonner on order for delivery in 2005. Not much has been said about this ship, perhaps because she is currently nameless. I was wondering if any Cruisetalkers had any suggestions regarding a name for this newbuild? My personal favourite is "Mauretania." What do you think? Let's name this ship already!!

Personally, I would like to see the new Cunarder be named Aquitania. Since this ship is neither the largest, fastest, longest, or any other real superlative, she should (hopefully) be known for her beauty. Aquitania was known as the "Ship Beautiful" for this very reason. While I like the name Mauretania, this ship would not due the original (which was largest, fastest, and most luxurious at the time of her maiden voyage)any justice. This is the problem that befell the second Mauretania. With a ship like QE2 - a real oceanliner, Queen Mary 2 - one purporting to be a real oceanliner and one in the spirit of the orginal Mary (who was not the largest), I think it only fitting that the 85,000 tonner have something to make it unique as well, such as a name (once again hopefully) befiting her status.

I apologise if we already did this. It is quit possible as I am rather new to the board. If this is a repeat, Malcolm or Joe, please delete this thread.

Lots of posts get repeated over the years! It's still a good question: will Cunard use a traditional name, if so which one or a new name?

Place your bets!

I would go for Franconia after both the 1920s vessel which spent many winters cruising including a world cruise and after the conversion of one of the first two of the 1954 quartet for the Canadian service that was converted to cruising. Aquitania seems to stately and old fashioned for what is really a full time cruise ship. Cunard would be mad to loose the link with tradition by changing their naming policy.

My money is on Britannia... not only because of the first Cunarder, but, because she is to be situated in the British market, I believe the name Britannia will give her instant appeal.

How about CARNIVALIA to show their ownership?
Or CARNICUNAWINDSEAHALIA for total inclusiveness

Sorry Britanis if i seemed dismissive of your post. Didn't mean to disparage your suggestion. I did enjoy the earlier competition. Welcome aboard. I think you'll enjoy the camaraderie here!

Since they like to use Queen in the name, how about Queen Mum.

Hello,

There are so many lovely Cunard names. I think that Cunard will end up with the last, unnamed Vista ship as well, to replace QE2 which in the interim will be a second large full-time cruise ship. Within five to ten years, the grande dame must regrettably go. All vessels do have a finite lifespan, and, lovely as QE2 is, and as much as I would like her to last forever, she will be needing a replacement. A second Vista-class Cunarder would be perfect. So, QM2 (I really don't like that name) should be named Berengaria (she will remain a Queen - the wife of Richard the Lionhearted I believe), and the two "Vistas" Aquitania and Mauretania. Alternatively, they could drop the 2 from QM2 and just make her Queen Mary, and make the two Vistas Aquitania and Berengaria. If QE2 is kept, she could even be renamed Berengaria (if there is in fact only one Vista). Either way, they would represent two trios of top-line Cunarders - one from the end of WWI through the 1920s and the other from 1933 to the outbreak of WWII. Elegant, feasible, and historically accurate.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Hello,

Cunardcoll, Lusitania might just be to famous for having sunk to be a good name for a new ship. I rather like it myself, but market research would be needed to see if it is well-liked.

Borntocruise, they've done that already. Queen Elizabeth was named after HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who named her. She was queen at the time. Today's Queen Elizabeth 2 is named after that ship, not after HM the Queen. She (the Queen) has "the second" after her name because of Queen Elizabeth, (the "virgin queen") of the 1600s. A numeral is placed after a queen's name only if she has been the reigning monarch - i.e. she had no male siblings, or her male siblings were all killed before they could become king. This is the situation with Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. I don't know if there have been any others as well. Therefore, the Queen Mother was never queen in the same sense as her daugher - her husband was king. When a king dies, his first-born son, or if he has no sons, his first-born daughter, takes over as the reigning monarch. I apologize for my rather rudimentary knowlege, if anyone a bit more acclaimated with this wishes to comment or to correct me, please do so.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Here's my idea.....
Maybe Cunard could take the PATRIOT in for the next few years as the Queen Victoria. Then, when the Vista-Class ship is built, they could sell the Queen Victoria and name the new ship Queen Victoria 2. Then they could stick to the "2" concept.....QE2, QM2, QV2

Just a thought....

Hello,

I've heard the Patriot idea a few times already. I don't think that the ship is worthy of Cunard or being a Cunard "Queen." Personally, as stated above, I don't like the "2" bit anyhow. It was, after all, the result of a miscommunication.

Anyhow, I can't see how Cunard could market Patriot/Nieuw Amsterdam. She is a fine and comfortable ship, but if Cunard is serious about being a top-of-the-range luxury line, they're not going to be able to use a ship like that.

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY
