This icebreaker, owned and operated by Far Eastern Shipping Company of Russia and chartered by Quark Expeditions provides fantastic trips which are not cruises, they are expeditions. My wife and I were on two legs of their Arctic trips last year (Kamchatka and the Raoul Amundsen northwest passage) and we will take two more legs this summer. Anyone desiring more info e-mail me with the request. Accomodations, by the way, are equivalent to a small cruise ship and the expedition staff is really top notch.

I read once that these ships were nuclear-powered. Is this true?

Tell us more about the experience. (insert chilly graemlin here)

I recall reading your review last year, sounded superb. Which legs are you doing this year?

Hello,

Sounds very interesting... Perhaps a bit isolated for me - I don't know... I think if I went to Antarctica I'd choose something like Marco Polo instead, which sounds very nice... But of course that's a whole different animal... I've just found their website, it's here, I haven't looked yet though...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

Two replies -
To Pam: We will take the "High Arctic" which is the Canadian Arctic and a bit of Greenland and then Tanquary Fjord and Ellsmere Island.

To Cruiseny: We took the Marco Polo to the Antarctic on their next to last "circumnavigation" which really went only to the Ross Sea. It was a good trip and we did see the explorer's huts as well as the Italian, British and Chilean research stations and lots of penguins. However we went ashore only six or seven times and waited most of a day each time to go. With an icebreaker having a much smaller passenger load everyone goes ashore at the same time. However the price is comensurate. A trip that only goes to the peninsula misses a lot, but does see wildlife.

To Namlit: The Khlebnikov is diesel-electric powered. The Yamal is nuclear-electric powered and is about twice a powerful as the Khlebnikov. Quark charters that one also to go to the geographic north pole for about $36,000. That price may or may not include the ride in a submersible under the ice to the true location of the pole. I can't quite see the fascination of that one. They are doing research along the way.

Coincidentally, I just received a packet of brochures from Quark filled with STUNNING photos of several expeditions. James, you must have had an incredible experience.

The prices are out of my range, but this looks like the kind of trip that would be worth saving-up for. WOW

We'll have to go together than Namlit in 20yrs time! By then there may be a McDonald's on Antarctica though
I too have the brochures and look longingly, but it's not the sort of thing that interests my husband. Neither am I very good at saving money for an extra special trip. As soon as I get enough 'spare' money, I go on whatever that covers at the time, I may not be around if I keep it is my philosophy.

James, that looks superb, have a great time I see you will be dropping in on Thulewx, who provides the weather reports?

Pam

I've got all the brochures too. However, I too have a cash-flow problem! Anyway, I could go on a number of conventional cruises for the cost of one to Antartica.

I think that I will have to wait until Carnival go!

To Pam: Re weather reports, I guess it's an international weather service transmits weather maps by FAX at least daily. In case of weather warnings they are also sent by FAX, and weather forecasts for the particular region including wind force are sent by FAX twice a day. When you're on the bridge you get to see all these, and the bridge on the icebreaker is open all the time. The freighter bridge on the City of Tunis was also.

Incidentally, under the guidance of one of the officers, one of our passengers was allowed to steer the Khlebnikov through pack ice for a couple of hours!
