I know that some of you out there have cruised on Arcadia and some on Norwegian Dream, but has anyone cruised on both?

Hello,

Hmmm, Malcom, sounds like you're considering a cruise ? I haven't personally been on either, but I'd have to say Arcadia is likely the nicer of the two. I think that Bart has been on both though, he'd be the one to ask...

Happy Cruising,

Malcolm we have been on N Wind (as you know same lay out to Dream) and will be on Arcadia in Dec. From our experience of Wind & a study of deck plans I would have to agree with Cruiseny that Arcadia looks the better laid out ship. We thought NW had a "dislointed" layout & after the stretch certain areas such as show lounge were overcrowded. NW/ND takes nearly 300 more pass than Arcadia on 13000 less tonnage, need I say more?

Hello,

Eric, I hate to tell you, but Norwegian Wind was perhaps a bit disjointed even before the stretch... I was on her (just to visit, I was cruising on a different NCL ship, we docked next to her in a port and I asked if I could go have a look, this was before security was a real concern) when she was pretty much brand-new, and I didn't like the layout too much, however, the post-stretch layout looks rather crowded... And as you mentioned, some of the public rooms were not elarged despite the higher capacity... It is not a bad ship, but I wouldn't say it is as good as Arcadia...

Happy Cruising,
CruiseNY

I have sailed aboard Arcadia in her previous life as Star Princess several times and loved her very much. I have sailed with NCL and P&O, many times on both. The huge difference will be in the quality of the onboard product. No matter how you measure it, there is no comparison as P&O are in a vastly different league than NCL, with P&O being significantly better in every way. It was joked for many years that NCL was an acronym for "No Cash Left" but since Star has banked rolled the line, it is now perhaps "No Class Left"!

A former NCL employee told me that after Star took over, they renamed NCL - Nobody Cares Less. Another friend of mine who worked for NCL in Miami nicknamed NCHell - and said it really was like hell working there.

Although I have not sailed on N.DREAM, and have visited her as DREAMWARD. I was not impressed. Very ordinary ship and as others have stated, very disjointed. Since her stretch, the ship has become even more high-density with many more cabins, but not a whole lot of extra public space. There is basically not Lido Restaurant/Grill which is one of the huge downfalls of this ship.

I have sailed on ARCADIA as STAR PRINCESS and loved her! In fact, I was on her second cruise and thought she was fantastic. Her pool areas are still some of the very best afloat.

Hope this helps,
Ernie Roller,
Atlanta

I'm always considering a cruise - but silly little details like 'lack of money' often get in my way!

Hello,

I have not been on an NCL ship but was on Arcadia this time last year. Arcadia is a very British ship and we all had a fantastic time on board. Our cabin was a four berth outside and was bigger than we had expected, bathroom was a good size and the shower was large enough to hold a decent size party, complete with a seat (don't though sit on the loo and flush at the same time)
I have heard some Americans complain that the food is geared towards the British palette, but it is a British ship. For us it was excellent and the service from all staff could not have been better, we also enjoyed the Indian night. You will have to book but there is no extra charge just first come first served as numbers are limited.
There was also a carnival night when the atrium was transformed into a carnival show ground with all money raised going to seafaring charities.
In my opinion you could not fail to have a great time on Arcadia, as a family we'd go back on her in a shot but can't as she is now 'adults only' so will have to wait and see what happens with the proposed re-branding!!!!!
I am sure there will be others who have experienced both but if we could only ever go on one ship we could do a lot worse than choose Arcadia, so go for it while you still can.

Dave

We've just returned off Arcadia 2 weeks ago and had the best cruise we've ever had.
Although she's slightly showing her age and not a patch on Enchantment Of The Seas our last ship, we were all very sorry to leave her behind in Barbados.
First time with P&O and wont be our last.
Best food and entertainment we've ever seen on a cruise ship.
One problem was the theatre has a lot of obstructed views both upstairs and down.
We too had an outside cabin to sleep 4 people and had loads of room.
Its a shame that these rooms are going to be made smaller next year after its refit when it transfers to its new company.
If you get a chance to cruise on her I would as I know you'll enjoy the experience.

Yes I too found Arcadia although a little faded now and could do with refurbishment, she had a great atmosphere on board, a very friendly ship, and like all P&O ships very British. The food was excellent, as was the entertainment, although I have heard that had recently gone downhill somewhat especially on Oriana and Aurora, that doesn't bother me I dont go on a ship to be entertained. If you see her at a good price then you wouldn't be disappointed Malcolm.

Cheers - M.

Arcadia may be a nicer ship than Norwegian Dream but if you are thinking P&O then catch Victoria while you still can. Besides NCL and the Norway, P&O is the last major company to offer cruises on a traditional liner. (Although compared to Norway Victoria wins out in nearly every way except size.) Come November Victoria will really not be available to British or Americans, unless you have a good comand of German, so if you have the time and money seriously think about it. (I have neither mind you.)

Great idea about the Cruisepage photo album.

We are just back from the Arcadia repositioning cruise (Barbados - Southampton) and had a wonderful time. However, obviously if you want to catch Arcadia you will have to do it in the next nine months or so before the Ocean Village concept takes hold. I don't think it is aimed at me as although within the age bracked I like the traditional P&O cruise. I don't understand why when Arcadia has such a loyal following (this was our second trip on her) that P&O are throwing away that success. They are importing bigger and bigger as far as I can see and where does that leave someone who wants something of reasonable size without being a super cruiser.

After we did the Alantic crossing to NY on Aurora last year we felt severe cost cutting in all departments was too evident and we were a little worried that this would have continued but all the remarks about the food must have got home as the food was as excellent as our first P&O adventure a few years ago on Oriana.

Arcadia is a little rusty around the edges but the experience was wonderful. Great facilities, entertainment, food and company.

Nobody picked me up when I suggested that VICTORIA and NORWAY were the last 2 ships offering the English speaking market an ocean liner experience. What about Cunrad with the CARONIA and QE2 and SAGA with the SAGA ROSE? Still VICTORIA is a standout in any company and Cunard will certainly pick up many of her former passengers by positioning the attractive CARONIA at Southampton.

You're right! We shouldn't rely on people to correct themselves ...

Ocean liners still in service for the English-speaking market: Caronia (Cunard), Norway (NCL), QE2 (Cunard), Saga Rose (SAGA), Topaz (Thomson), Victoria (P&O)...

Caronia was never employed in a real liner service, but she was designed with that in mind.

Malcolm:
I have been on the Arcadia when she was still Star Princess-nice ship but if you have not sailed on NCL since the introduction of Freestyle Cruising you are missing a very different cruising experience. Freestyle means you eat when you want (dinner is served 5:30-10:00p.m.), with whom you want, where you want(The new Norwegian Star in Hawaii has 10 different restaurants onboard). It is also about prepaid gratuties that can adjusted daily if desired, stay in your cabin prior to departure etc.All in all a different style of cruising and one I heartily recommend if you like casual cruising.Mind you, not as staid as British style, definitely more hip.(Oh, boy I just know I'm going to hear about that statement. Please, please do not take offense-I am only referring to styles of cruising, not Brits!)

Nothing is for free is this world-Especially any NCL offerings!!! Go with a real cruise line, and get what you pay for.

Thanks for all the advice.

I did have half an idea about cruising on one of these two ships, but it will probably not happen now.

I'd like to try P&O, however I'd like to try Freestyle too - I do not want to judge it, until I've tried it!

NCL prices do tend to be cheaper than P&O's, but I do agree that often get what you pay for. (But not always!)

However, I always have budgetary constraints, so I'm glad that the likes of NCL provide a choice.

Aussie1...Sorry to disagree but the Marco Polo of Orient is the best example of a liner type vessel left that's worth going on. And her running mate, the Crown Odyssey is still one of the best designed cruise ships.

Thanks for all the advice folks. I was half thinking of taking a cruise on one or the other ships, but it is unlikely to happen now.

To be honest neither ship particularly excites me!
