Both my 1st and second cruises were QE2 crossings in 1990 and 1991 respectively. Both times in Columbia (now Caronia) restaurant.

Have been spoiled ever since

The LEONARDO DA VINCI of the Italian line. It was in 1977 and I was only 11 years old, but I remember it well. The ship of course is no longer with us, but she remains my all time favorite. This is in part because she was my first, but also because she had the most beautiful, classic lines I have ever seen (as do many 50's & 60's Italian Liners). They just don't build them like that anymore!

Some 49 cruises later, I'm still going strong and love to be at sea. I guess you could say the LEONARDO (and my Grandmother who took me I might add) created a monster.

Hello,

Horizon, February 1993. It was called Chandris Celebrity Cruises back then (they dropped the Chandris bit soon after).

I suppose when you have such a great time at an immpressionable age (5 ) you will want more, and so like Ernie said, it created a monster!

I wouldn't say she is my favorite ship, certainly a nice one, but I can't say I have a real favorite. I like Princess better.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

My first cruise was on the Norway Sept. 1995. I won the cruise by throwing a paper airplane at a hockey game. Been hooked ever since.

First cruise was on the old Volendam back in November 1981. 12 day Southern Caribbean, but because of them retubing the boilers while we were on board we missed Bonaire and Caracas - got 40% back toward another cruise which we took in 1982 and have been cruising ever since - #'s 37 & 38 coming up. You can tell we liked to cruise. I think that cruise cost us around $1115.Cdn each - can't remember if it included air or not.

First cruise, as distinct from 'crossings' was October '77 - the old HAL Statendam - New York /Bermuda - a rough trip! After departing New York, few pax surfaced until we reached Bermuda - and then our groups' activities were cancelled - we had to leave Bermuda earlier than scheduled - it was that or stay where we were!

Bermuda lovers, we would have happily stayed!

First cruise for us was the Seawind Crown out of Aruba in 1994, alas, as I understand it she is no longer cruising. But, she did introduce us to the island of Aruba and after several land vacations on this very arrid and windy island, it is our most favourite holiday spot in the Carribean. We did one cruise on the Carousel from this port as well in 1997.
I'd like to know if everyone keeps their boarding passes after the trip? I have kept all mine so far.
This year for the first time we are heading to Europe. Doing the Med on the Sunbird in September.

My first cruise was on the SS Norway March 8-15, 1981. I sailed again on her in early September 2000, and I am planning on going again, what will likely be my last time, later this year. To this day she remains my favorite ship and my best cruise experience.
It's a shame she will eventually be driven out of the big ship Caribbean market that she alone created. For those who want to experience a great cruise and can live for a week without a rock-climbing wall, or a ten-story atrium, or an ice skating rink, then you will enjoy the Norway. This may be your last chance to sail this truly magnificent ship. There will never be another one like her.

For me it was 1978. I had been invited to travel with a group of friends aboard Pacific Princess. The thought of sea travel was not appealing, but I did attend the bon voyage party aboard her in Vancouver. From the moment I stepped aboard, I knew a mistake had been made! So, in a matter of weeks, I sailed aboard Oriana from Vancouver to Fort Lauderdale. Over 30 voyages later, I know I made a wise choice in vacation preferences!

IVAN FRANCO, February 15th to 26th 1981.

Starting Genova, to Malaga-Funchal-St. Cruz de Tenerife-Casablanca and back.

835 German Marks in an staple-bed Outside Cabin No. 511.

Shower and toilet over the floor for all.

It was an great Experience for me and my Wife (we married in 1986, but are together since 1979)

And...

...of course...

it created an MONSTER!

Now i prefer CELEBRITY.

But the Cruises with BLASCO in the 1980's are great and cheap.

First "cruise" was actually a return voyage on the then-troopship "Monterey" Yokohama to Seattle in Sept 1946.

Matson staff, Matson printed menus, Matson Funnel Markings, (dark blue-gray against USN gray); a double-porthole cabin with BATHTUB (THIS ON A TROOPSHIP!); orchestra and dances (returning nurses and WACs aboard)!

A smooth and great voyage. Sitting on the fantail in teak deckchairs watching the albatoses (pl/sp?)and whales,[ and that ship, of then-conventional design built up a spectacular wake!] it was a remarkable and very pleasant way to end the War!

Although we were coming home to families and friends, many wished the voyage would have lasted longer!

But in the ticket-buying world of cruises, my first would have been, our honeymoon voyage in November 1957, NYC-Bermuda on Furness' "Ocean Monarch." A great trip, but had to DC-6 it home on Eastern Airlines so could not make it a round trip.

My first cruise was half way to Catalina Island aboard the Royal Viking Star in the early 80's. I say "half way" because we were just visitors. We were having drinks in one of the bars when I noticed the lights moving outside. We were sent down a ladder to a waiting oil rig taxi that was heading back to LA.
The first cruise I had a ticket for was the Azure Seas out of LA to Ensenada. I got to leave via the gangway that time.

Smooth Seas,

I was talked into my first cruise by one of my daughters, and now I am hopelessly hooked! We sailed in Oct., '95 - a 3-night cruise to the Bahamas on the Oceanic. Even though this was our first ship experience, we hated to see a beautiful liner festooned with "Looney Tunes". We fell in love with the ship and had a wonderful time EXCEPT for one thing: We knew nothing about cabins and deck plans, so blithly chose a cabin, no questions asked. After 2 nights of no sleep and some studying of the deck plans, we realized that we were directly under the galley - actually the part where baked goods were being prepared all night long. At first, we thought we were under an all-night bowling alley. We learned alot those few days (nights) about cabin selection!

As a kid in the '60's, I watched every P&O liner arrive at or sail from Vancouver, and often got visitor passes to see them up close. Oriana (1960) was my favourite. I managed a few overnight ferry trips over the years [Sydney, NS - Port Aux Basques, NFLD; Kelsey Bay - Prince Rupert], waited until 1990 for my first real cruise, on the Finnmarken, on the 12-day Norwegian Hurtigrute roundtrip. That was followed two years later with the Regent Star to Alaska and, in 1994, Rotterdam V, LA-Hawaii-LA. I've become stuck on Holland America, love long lazy sea days, and prefer any cruise that lasts more than a week. Sailing up Juan de Fuca, Haro and Georgia Straits and into Vancouver harbour is the best possible way to come home!

My first cruise was in 1960 on board the Stratheden; a 13 day cruise to Vigo, Barcelona and Funchal. Airconditioning was limited to the dinning room and few cabins even in first class had ensuite facilities. Entertainment was what the Pursers' staff and the passengers could do plus one trio that played alternate nights in Tourist and First class. Dancing was in the ballroom with the side screens opened up so that either side was open to the sea air to cool the room and those dancing down. In those days you didn't try to cram in 6 ports of call into a two week cruise! This was the first of many cruises with P&O. How they have changed!

Why do they try and cram so many ports into cruises these days? Do they make more from tours than by people spending onboard? Are port charges cheaper than sailing? Personally I'd prefer at least 2 sea days between each port. A run of one port after another is tiring.

Pam

It was a lovely week in late September, 1989. I went to Bermuda aboard the Nordic Prince. Notwithstanding the dreadful weather the first day out which left me rather ill, I decided that cruising was definitely for me.

April 2000 from Barbados to Southampton on board P&O's Arcadia. I think, along with most others, that however many ships you cruise on none will have the magic of the first.
