O.K all of you insiders, speculators, and dreamers; picture the scene:

It is the year 2006, and the world’s major cruise line, RCO (Royal Carnival & Orient), headed by CEO Joe Koshuta, are designing their first 200,000 gross ton ‘Gigantic-Class’ ship.

In the past we have seen water slides, climbing walls, mini-golf and ice skating rinks onboard big ships, but what will be next?

You have just been employed as a consultant to design the entertainment and sports facilities of this new remarkable vessel. So what will you include?

If it can be anything then what about a zero gravity saloon bet that would make the formal dinners a bit less formal! Perhaps also a solution to sea sickness. Actually I would be more interested in how this ship should look like from the outside as once did a design for a futuristic super liner. btw if Joe is the CEO can I be the captain of this ship?

Now for the more serious responses.

Best, Onno

With Malcolm Oliver, the CEO's right hand man, doing all the Monkey Business.

Passenger entertainment aboard the first VLCS [Very Large Cruise Ship], Idemitsuation of the Seas [IDIOTS], will include the World's first floating zoo, with a programme for breeding endangered chimps and gorillas, for releasing into the wild at certain ports of call. Undesirable passengers will be refused reboarding at these ports and will remain with the chimps for one year to track and record their progress. The passengers will be able to resume their cruising when IDIOTS return the following year.

Also aboard will be the first Steel HyperCoaster at sea. A 3000ft ride, with a top speed of 100mph, attached to the outside hull of IDIOTS. The first drop of 200 feet will be over the Bridge towards the bow, at an angle of 75 degrees, giving one the impression of heading directly into the ocean, before a sharp right hand turn takes you under the bow down the starboard side. Guaranteed to stun the human body.

Built in a Bomb.

This has three Advantages:

1st: it is easier for Terrorists, when they found their needed Items on Board.

2nd: nothing is so fascinating than real Crime.

3rd: This Nonsense-Ship will be blown up, and i hope, People will come back to REAL SHIPS. They are much better to sail and feel the Sea.

Hello,

Good idea Malcom, this post... I may be able to talk almost as much as you but you have better imagination ...

Now, what job shall I have ?

CEO: Joe Koshuta
President: Malcom Oliver
Captain: Onno Heesbeen

Maybe I will design it, with all of you as my consultants ...

Initial design brief:

Of course the usual shopping mall (OK, Royal Promenade), three-level dining room, twin atriums, etc...

But of course all of this will be BIGGER and more SPECTACULAR than ever before!

The ship will be powered by the most advanced propulsion system in the world. Gas turbines and four Azipods will power the ship to a cruising speed of about 40 knots, allowing more time in port than ever before. Everything will be specially designed to be more fuel efficient and environmentally safe than ever before, plus being entirely free of any vibrations. The other behind-the-scenes areas will be as advanced and technologically sophisticated as possible.

Cabins will be larger and more comfortable than ever before. All of them will feature sitting areas, convertible beds, safes, minibars, larger bathrooms, interactive televisions with video-on-demand...

Even more amazingly, there will be no - that is absolutely zero - no view inside cabins. The only insides will be the famous promenade view cabins. Outside cabins will account for the majority of cabins and almost all of them will have balconies. No obstructed views at all.

Suites will be larger and more numerous than ever before. All of them will have huge marble bathrooms with seperate shower stalls, jacuzzis, double sinks, and toilets with bidets. Either seperate powder rooms for guests or in the smaller suites a divided bathroom seperating the toilet from the bath with through access. Walk-in closests, high-tech sound systems (probably by Bang & Olufsen), plasma displays, etc. All of them will offer tables suitable for dining and the large ones will have pantries. Full butler and concierge service will be included including full meal service during mealtimes from the dining room menu, and access to the private Key Club as well as priority reservations at alternative restaurants, private cocktail party, and other special amenities.

Entertainment venues will be more varied than ever, including a full Broadway/West End-style theatre, an expanded Studio B facility more than doubled in size, an on-board convention centre, and over twenty lounges and bars. A planetarium modeled after that on Queen Mary 2 will be introduced and will be complementary to an observatory atop the ship with advanced equipment. This will be part of the Studio B entertainment and conference centre complex. The trademark Viking Crown lounge which will be returned to its original purpose as a nightclub, reinvented to feature jazz music and other more "elegant" entertainment with a new nightclub insulated in the bowels of the vessel offering a super-advanced sound insulation system. In addition to the theatre a ballroom will be included and it will be possible for cabaret entertainment to be staged there as well as cocktail parties, afternoon teas, etc.

The dining experience will be elevated to a higher level than ever before. Traditional two-seating dining will be offered in the main dining room. You'll find a 24-hour Cafe Promenade, and another 24-hour Seaview Cafe. Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Sushi, and French alternatives will be available plus an exclusive Supper Club restaurant offering true haute cuisine and the most extensive wine list at sea.

A huge wellness centre will feature the most comprehensive facilities in the world and will be run by one of the world's most prestigious land based spas. It will also include a huge gymnasium and beauty salon, and will include hydrotherapy pool for use at no charge.

The outdoor recreational facilities will be the most extensive in the world. The basketball and volleyball courts are now two seperate facility and are full-sized and outdoors. A magrodome will cover a Solarium with two (2) pools including one "normal" pool and a wave pool, plus the largest traditional RCCL pool deck ever, now featuring three (3) pools. Both the Solarium and the main pool deck will include theraputic jacuzzi tubs. A huge miniature golf course will be far more sophisticated ever before.

Other new features will be announced in the coming days (weeks) with your help!

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Hello,

ERIC NORWAY II has long been one of my favorite "fantasy" ship designs.

As always I am glad to see your latest ones !

It is a shame that Star Cruises are not as well-run as your fictional company .

And most definitely it must be a retro ship even more retro than QM2 so what doe you think of this design, isn’t it a guaranteed success with those kitsch elements? According to Cunard it must be without doubt a success.(by the way these where the first design plans for QM2 before the budget was cut, and the movie Titanic borrowed al the spare funnels )

Here's a noval idea that hasn't been done for a long time and will fix the pollution problem,

With so many passengers, give them all an OAR each as they board. , plus it can be classified as a fitness program that the passengers have to PAY FOR ...B

In keeping with the trend to keep the image of a ship as far away as possible from passengers..
[even Malcom climbed the ship's "rock wall" in Flam, one of the most beautiful ports where real mountains abound]..
I suggest the incorporation of a Grand Prix Racetrack.

The ship could deploy to various ports worldwide where environmental or geographic concerns make the establishment of a Grand Prix Track infeasible...
[Joe knows well whereof I speak, given the recent Kerfuffle at the Washington,DC venue]

All you need is a mile and a half course, and if the loa + beam will not accomodate such, it could be structured on two levels.

Thus the separation of cruising from reality could be complete!

I have two ideas:

1) A train that spirals around the edge of the ship from the first deck to the top, providing excellent views!

2) A boating lake on the upper deck, full of one man motor boats! Now that would be really surreal, driving a boat onboard a ship!

Here is a picture sketched by some guy in 1928 who was a Cunard artist...showing the Aquitania and Mauretania pulling the massive ship like tug boats. I think this ship would be over a 3 miles long....the MEGALOMANIA would be a monstrosity. This picture was sketched before the Queen Mary's keel was laid.

Hello,

Barryboat, for a second I thought that said "Malcomia" on the bow ...

I am assuming that this was done as a joke, not a serious Cunard design consideration?

You mean an aeroplane runway? I was just watching a programme on TLC (The Learning Channel) about Voyager and it mentioned the "Freedom Ship" project which has a large runway on the top deck...

Personally I don't think a cruise ship needs an airport. Of course "Freedom Ship" isn't a cruise ship at all - in my opinion what it is is a dumb idea.

The freedom ship is no design! You can see in this topic that anyone can think of outrages things for ships and put it into one ship but it takes more intellect to justify the reason why you would build it. If you cant (and I heard the people who’s idea the freedom ship is) then your “design” is as good or rather bad as the next idea. Actually I was a bit shocked by the reason why they want to build this community so that they can decide who lives their, they can decide what the laws are going to be and they decide what is going to be learned at school. A bit creepy and reminded me of a situation in 1936.

About the size of this stacks of decks monstrosity well anyone can pin point a length, that’s not so hard to do. I could even imagine a ship with a length so long that she crosses the entire transatlantic ocean and you only have to walk trough the ship and gamble a bit under way, wait a minute that’s called a bridge isn’t it. Well any way it saves fuel and is no hazard to nature.

The Freedom ship is a clear example of people who have no idea what they are doing. The first doing and then (maybe) thinking. I strongly belief you first have to do the thinking part to come up with reasons to justify your design this is the only reason to get a faultless design.

You can al bad mouth about the Carni. Corp. but if these sort of people and main reason of the freedom ship is going to be the future of cruise ships than I would rather prefer Carni. Corp. (but that’s only if there is no hope left)

All the best, Onno

first of all i would not build
a 200,000 or 600,000 ton ship.
the qm2 at 150,000 ton will
just fit under the verazono
bridge in ny city.
her length of 1135 ft. will
stick out into the hudson river.
i would keep it simple and
american. i would build a modern
version of the ss united states.
she would have 3 propellers.
2 propellers would be operated
by gas turbines. the 3rd propeller would be steam turbine
driven. steam would be created
from reclaimed heat from the
2 gas turbines. the exhaust
temp. from a gas turbine is
around 650 degrees.

staterooms: would all be identical. 2 full beds or a
king size, 27 in. color tv,
2 recliners with table in between to watch tv.
the bath room would have a bathtb-shower,3ft cabinet with
sink and a non vacuum type toilet. those vacuum type dont
work as well and make a lot of
noise! floors would be fire retardant carpeting except the
bathroom would be marble.

all staterooms would be from the
main deck and below.
the restaraunts, pools and entertainment would be above the
main deck.
i would have 2 pools, one amidship and the other at the stern. the pool at amidship would be covered and would have
a restaraunt at each end.

movie theater with big screen
and stage for broadway musicals.

another movie theater with big
screen for sports fans.

a health and fittness center,
barbershop,hobbyshop for oceanliner nuts,bookstore,
museum of oceanliners and related items.
a hands on science center for
kids.
a observation lounge at the top
of the ship.
a smoking room near the ships
smoke stack for those that like
to choke on cigars and cigarettes. the exhaust from this room would be discharged
into the ships stack.
you can determine how many people are smoking by looking
at the stack! also they would
have to sign a waiver saying
the ship is not responsible
for their smoking habit.

If what they write about freedomship at their own site is correct, you will find me living there if they build it!

Taken from freedomship.com

Envision an ideal place to live or run a business a friendly, safe and secure community with large areas of open space and extensive entertainment and recreational facilities. Finally, picture this community continually moving around the world. You are beginning to understand the Freedom Ship concept of a massive ocean-going vessel. With a design length of 4,500 feet, a width of 750 feet, and a height of 350 feet, Freedom Ship would be more than 4 times longer than the Queen Mary. The design concepts include a mobile modern city featuring luxurious living, an extensive duty-free international shopping mall, and a full 1.7 million square foot floor set aside for various companies to showcase their products.

Freedom Ship would not be a cruise ship, it is proposed to be a unique place to live, work, retire, vacation, or visit. The proposed voyage would continuously circle the globe, covering most of the world's coastal regions. Its large fleet of commuter aircraft and hydrofoils would ferry residents and visitors to and from shore. The airport on the ship's top deck would serve private and small commercial aircraft (up to about 40 passengers). The proposed vessel's superstructure, rising twenty-five stories above its broad main deck, would house residential space, a library, schools, and a first-class hospital in addition to retail and wholesale shops, banks, hotels, restaurants, entertainment facilities, casinos, offices, warehouses, and light manufacturing and assembly enterprises. Finally, this concept would include a wide array of recreational and athletic facilities, worthy of a world class resort, making Freedom Ship a veritable "Community on the Sea."

you can read more about the ship at

Hello,

Aleks, I don't dispute that Freedom Ship sounds like it would be nice... But it also doesn't sound very feasible either.

And what about a ship that is so big? Could it successfully ride waves without breaking in two?

It´s experienced naval engineers who makes this ship, based on a well known technology.
The technology they use is not the same as they use at normal ships, she is made of 600 individual air/water tight hull sections instead of one. She moves slowly(10 knots), therfore she will be constructed to withstand storms you find even on the atlantic. They say she can manouver safely in 30m+ waves...
