FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Twenty-eight passengers and eight crewmembers have exhibited Norwalk virus-like symptoms on another sailing of Holland America Line's Amsterdam.
That's down from 163 passengers and 18 crew that exhibited the symptoms on the ship's previous sailing, but a spokesman for the line said the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) could ask HAL to pull the ship from service if more onboard outbreaks occur.

All 36 people were disembarked in Curacao, a HAL spokesman said. Ill passengers who are disembarked will get their cruise fare back, plus travel expenses paid, and a 25% credit off a future cruise.

The Amsterdam was thoroughly treated and sanitized according to federal regulations in between cruises Monday, and a spokesman said HAL and the CDC are closely watching the ship to see if there are more outbreaks in the next few days.

The Norwalk-like virus is similar to a stomach flu. It is spread through contaminated food and water and contact with infected people or objects they touch.

Other cruise lines, like Princess Cruises, have experienced Norwalk-like outbreaks this year; HAL earlier pulled its ship the Ryndam from service after passengers fell sick with the bug.

The Amsterdam arrived in Florida Nov. 11, en route from Seattle; it is now sailing roundtrip Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale.

What's up with the Amsterdam? They just can't seem to catch a break with this!

Keep your fingers crossed that they can clear this up, and soon!

I'm sailing on the Maasdam in a little over 2 weeks!

They still haven't learnt the lesson. They tried doing it with th Ryndam back in the summer, and you have to break the cycle 3 - 4 days and that means tieing the ship up. As they eventually did.
Princess found that out last year.

28 more cruise ship passengers become ill with stomach virus

By Bob LaMendola

The Holland America cruise ship Amsterdam was hit by another outbreak of a contagious stomach virus that plagued three previous voyages, but a spokesman Thursday said the number of cases was still small enough to control.

An estimated 28 of 1,302 passengers on board came down with the bug -- similar to the common Norwalk virus -- over the first three days of the ship's present 10-day cruise. The 28 passengers and 32 of their traveling companions were flown home when the ship reached port in Curacao, spokesman Erik Elvejord said. Eight of 600 crew members also got sick.

If an increasing number of people become ill in the next day or so, Holland America will consider canceling the ship's next Caribbean cruise on Nov. 21 from Port Everglades, Elvejord said. But if the cases level off or dwindle, the ship might continue sailing as usual.

"At 28, it's still down there in low numbers," Elvejord said. "The real question will be, where does it go [today]. We're hoping that being very, very aggressive about cleaning will break the cycle."

At least 215 people got sick on the ship's cruise from Seattle to Fort Lauderdale in early October, 41 more got sick on the next voyage and at least 181 got sick on the cruise that ended on Monday. The numbers are probably higher because many people do not report their illness.

The virus is spread by food, water or personal contact, such as touching items touched by an infected person. The virus causes diarrhea and vomiting for one to two days, but can cause more serious complications among the elderly

Sure hope they get a handle on this problem and cure it before our Christmas cruise on her. Diarrhea and vomiting aren't fun even in a suite, and I'll be dam*ed if we want to get put off the ship.
