I purchased the new Berlitz Guide to Cruising yesterday (2003). I must say that it is greatly improved over the previous years, in terms of layout. It is thicker (250 ships) with more information and some coloured pictures, too.

The Deutschland is still not featured, I don?t know why, but the QM2 is!

It is a most useful reference publication, as long a you are aware that it is one mans opinion (well a team's) and not a purely factual publication. I assume that it contains at least some technical errors, as per usual?

Malcolm - another book to consider is "THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO CRUISES 2003" by Kay Showker and Bob Sehlinger.

What I like about it is that the two authors are just average people with no ties to any cruise line or travel agency and have been on every ship out there. They provide info on the type of passenger that cruises each ship or line and make recomendations to find the ship that best suits what you're looking for. They describe each Cruise line then each individual ship in great detail.

They rate ships on a scale of 1 thru 10 and also a grade of A, B, C etc. based on the value you get for what you pay.

Malcolm, i can explain you the missing of the DEUTSCHLAND.

She is rated in the Edition 1999 with 4 Stars and an Plus, total 1656 Points.

The Edition 1999 should also appear in German Language, as is the Edition 1997.

Deilmann Peter, the Owner of the Company run to German Court, because Douglas Ward did not give his Ship an 5-Star-Rating.

He could show the Court, that there are some Mistakes in the Book of Ward, as are some Mistakes in the Description of the Deutschland.

Therefor the Court forbids the Selling of all Books in German Language in Germany, they were ready produced and must all be destroyed.

The English speaking Edition was not forbit, so i have an Book of 1999 in English.

Since this Act, Douglas Ward rates never again any Ship of Deilmann.

I knew the Maitre d' of the former Switzerland, Klaus Rom, an Austrian, from 2 former Cruises which i did with Cunard, where he was Maitre before.

He told me, when i was on the Switzerland with my Wife for Sylvester 1999, that his Girlfriend is on the Deutschland. They had massive Complaints from the Passengers, when the Ship was starting Cruising. The Inside 2-bed-Cabins had an Minimum of Space, later Deilmann sold this as an 1-Bed-Cabin.

The Chiefcook changed all 6 Weeks, and the Quality of Food was inconsistent. They had from the Start on Problems with proper Service, so the Management of the Deutschland often calls to the Switzerland, in the Hope, the Maitre will change.
(He told me: "why should i change - here i have no Problems, why should i search them")

they have massive Problems with Noise from the Propulsion System. This Problems are repaired at an later Stay in the Shipyard. The Ship was built at Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft, not at Meyer.

The Crew Ratio is 2,4 and the Space Ratio is 34,4.

I think, every Ship of Celebrity is better. The Booking of an Cruise of the Deutschland for the Brochure Price is an Sign of being uninformed or of personal Stupidness.

Sometimes they offer good special Rates, because they can not fill the Liner...

...for an very Special Price, i would think about an Booking...

...on the other Hand, the best rated Ship in the World is German, it is the Europa of Hapag-Lloyd.
Here you will NEVER find an special rated Cruise,
and they have NO PROBLEMS.

I recall this case Amerikanis. However I would have thought that Ward was entitled to give a ship whatever grade he wishes? After all it is his personal opinion.

I don't understand why he has completely dropped the ship from recent additions of the book? Did he loose the court case?

Malcolm, the Problem for Ward was, that he had some real Mistakes in the Description of the Deutschland.

I think, this Ship is never 5 Stars, and Ward can post his personal Opinion and rate the Ship 4+.

But he made some little Mistakes, and this was the Reason for the Court to forbit the Selling of the Book in German Language in Germany, because they see the Problem, that the Rating of Ward can damage the Business of Deilmann.

And some Points are not correct.

It is not only an Problem of the Rating of the Deutschland. If you read the Berlitz carefully and complete, you can sometimes find an Mistake.
He is not perfect.

Ward must destroy the complete Stock of Books in German Language, which are ready to sell. This would cost an big amount of Money, which is loose...

Not forbidden was the English speaking Book to sell in Germany. So, i bought this. I buy the Berlitz each Year 1 Piece, in 1997 it was in German too, the others since 1994, since i buy it, are in English.

Will look in my Bookstore if i can buy the 2003 Edition now here.

I'm new to this forum...hi everyone...It has been difficult to find a Berlitz in the major bookstores, in the past few months. The latest one we have is 2001. In this past Oct, we took an Enchantment of the Seas cruise. We noted our Berlitz had the food with a very low rating, 169 of possible 400. Because of a good price we decided to go anyway. We found the food to be much better than that (we've had 17 cruises, 3 with RCCL to compare). Perhaps Enchantment has just improved since the original rating. We have appreciated the level of info supplied by Berlitz. If you don't mind, may I ask, what does the Berlitz 2003 say on the Enchantment's food?

Remember 'Berlitz' is just one opinion! I often do not agree with their findings, either.

The updated version rates Enchantment's food as 248 (out of a possible 500).

You can get the 2003 Berlitz guide on British Amazon web site, but I can't find it on the US site?

Berlitz Ocean Cruising 2003

A River Cruising version will be available soon, hence the new title.

I've heard from very good sources that Douglas Ward is, sadly, not in the best of health. There is some discussion about the future of the guide if he becomes too ill to continue.

Whether we agree or disagree with his reviews, I'm sure we are in agreement that Douglas has done much to promote consumer interest in cruising and I hope we all wish him well.

Yes, Douglas Ward has contributed a great deal. I've collected a number of different cruise books over the years, Frommer's, Fodors, Unofficial Guide, Fieldings, and Berlitz (and a number of the same for different years), and Berlitz seemed to give me the most detailed information quickly. I'm really not knowlegable enough (only 17 cruises), to judge the total scope of his work, but I really appreciated the format. I must say, though, that if I were rating the food of the Enchantment of the Seas, I would give it at least 300 or more out of a possible 400 (from my single experience).

It's O.K, I'll take over his job!

Is the book not a team effort these days, anyway?

i have to admit that i could never find out why the whole cruise industries does jump if an ex musican from the QE2 (thats what he used to be) comes onboard - i do not understand how his opinion could get so important for the industries
for me his books are a collection of personal very subjective opinions - i worked myself on ships when he was onboard and i know how special he get treated and how much more efforts are made to please him compared to a regular passenger - its actually discussting too see how high qualified managers are getting nervous and shaky as soon as they hear his name -
his books and opinons are defenitley over rated and i guess looking at some reviews of regular passengers in the net and comparing them you will get a better picture of what is real onbaord

koch, this is the GENERAL PROBLEM of an Person like Douglas Ward: everybody responsible in the Cruise Industry knews, who Douglas Ward is, and his Opinion is of course very important for them.

Better it would be, the Berlitz is working like the GUIDE MICHELIN for Restaurants:

Nobody knews, who the Testers are, they come incognito, order their Meals, pay them and go. they test each Restaurant minimum 3 Times, and i think, they change the Testers for the Tests.

Then they give their Rating.

Being rated with 1 Star is an great Honour, 3 Stars is the Maximum.

In Germany, with 80 Million Inhabitants, there are only 3 or 4 or 5 Restaurants, which are rated 3 Stars.

Berlitz could paint an much better Picture, if the Testers are unknown and treated as EVERYBODY.

It should not be an Problem for them, to live in the cheapest Inside-Cabin in the lowest Deck. Nobody of the Ships Management would expect an very important Person in that Category...
