Rain and wind have made me a TV addict as some will have seen in my UK TV alert.
But this documentary on Discovery just puzzles me.
Basically, two consulting firms (European on Atlantic side, US on Pacific)are working at ways of allowing the Canal to accomodate postpanamax vessels.
QM2 and other mega cruiseliner operators should watch this with interest, if it ever goes ahead.
Ecologists opposes it as salt water may contaminate fresh water levels.
The European Consultant plans to built a huge version of a "lifting bathtub" to eliminate the problem, on a successful river model in Germany.
Panama Canal ain't no small euroriver!
Another possibility(US) proposes a dam whose lake would mean relocating thousands of people.
Finally, the most expensive solution is to build an entirely new set of locks, a job twice bigger than the original. No cost was discussed.
The models of the panamax ships were a bit out of scale, but excellent job for visualising the task.
Anybody seen it?

Princess is offering a Panama Canal ten-day cruise on the Grand Princess (check their site, it's true!). As for the Panama Canal project I don't think it is feasible.

Most of the money made by the Canal is from cargo ships, many of which are now too large for the canal.

There is brisk business in "transcontinental rail" traffic of containers across the Isthmus and Southern Mexico.

Any enlargement project would have to cost-compare off-load/on-load land txp of containers with the costs of a bigger ditch. I do not know the projected winner of such an analysis, or if it even had been made!

Precisely. There is still no way for post-Panamax shisp to go through the Canal, which is an obstacle to positioning them on the West Coast and probably one of the biggest reasons that a VOYAGER-class ship will not be seen there in the near future.

As I understand it the plan is to build a completely new set of locks alongside the present ones which would continue to be used for smaller vessels. The US team would design one set of locks and the European the other - I'm not sure which was Atlantic or Pacific though.

Of course it remains to be seen if this will go through but I imagine there is a good chance that it will, seeing as at the moment the size of the Canal is a big detriment to world trade (cruise ships will, I imagine, have little bearing on the decision).

When we went through the Panama Canal, we were told that officials were planning a second canal. This would be parallel to the first. The second canal could be wider and deeper than the first.

If my memory is right, I believe the second canal will be a single lane.
Although designed for cargo ships, it would be foolish to exclude it from cruise operators.
I have always wondered how QM2 will do a World cruise?
Mind you, ssFrance and rmsQueen Mary did it through the dangerous South American narrows, but it were a one off.
It would be interesting to see what consequences it would bear on the cruising world.

The France did it through the Straits of Magellan on the World Cruises in 1972 and 1974 but the Queen Mary sailed by the Cape Horn.

Here's an article on the Queen Mary from here

October 31, 1967 Queen Mary left from Southampton to Lisbon, Las Palmas, Rio de Janeiro,
Valparaiso, Callao, Bilbao, Acapulco and finally Long Beach on December 9, 1967.

The voyage round Cape Horn was strange because the Queen Mary carried two London buses so that passengers on them could say they traveled round the Cape in a London Bus.

If the cruiselines wanted their ships to go through the Panama Canal they shouldn't/wouldn't have built them so big in the first place. They made their decisions; let them live with those decisions.

I had no idea ssFrance did it twice. It would be intersting to have the bunker figures!
As for Queen Mary, with her two propellers dragging free, she must not have saved so much!
Did they charge passengers for sitting in the Buses whilst rounding Magellan?
The extent of the conversion of QM1 is trully appalling.
If the New Canal is built, that could mean she could return home, perhaps in a barge as many Navy ships did?
Imagine the crowd puller as she sails up the Solent, perhaps with Queen Mary2 nearby?
2006 would be ideal, her 70th birthday!
In the meantime (and cost), how come the Round South America Cruise trade, buoyant in the 80's has disappeared?

Queen Mary didn't round Magellan.

You may imagine the Points below if I show the figures from South America Pilot Book.

Point of East Entrance of Straits of Magellan is Punta Dungeness lies 52° 24' S, 68° 26' W
Point of Western Entrance of Straits Magellan is Cape Pilar lies 52° 43' S, 74° 41' W

Cape Horn lies 55° 59' S,  67° 17' W

The vehicles themselves were provided to transport visitors from the center of Long Beach to the ship once she was put on display.
The proceeds of the "Cape Horn Trip" were given to an orphanage in Valparaiso.

sorry for confusing Magellan with Cape Horn.
The later must be obviously deeper or safer?
As for the proceeds of the Queen Mary, I am glad they went to a good cause.
Because of the economic situation there, would't it a good idea to have more large vessels sailing more often before the New canal opens?
I recall many classic vessels doing a proper Round South America cruises in the early 80's.

Until early 80's, Most cruise lines sold Circle South America cruises for Duration about 2 months.

At that time Many cruise ships called either Punta Arenas(in the Strait of Magellan) or Ushuaia(in the Beagle Channel, Near Cape Horn).

In the late 80's, Cruise lines started to sell short South America Cruises for duration in 2 weeks.
Thereafter, They Planned to stop both Punta Arenas and Ushuaia and also they featured to sail by Cape horn in their itinerary.

Now some cruise ships sails Chiliean Fjords(like Inside Passage in Alaska) route between Puerto Montt and Punta Arenas or Ushuaia and visits Seno Eyre Fjord(Pius XI Glacier) and/or Amalia Glacier.

Below are sample itinerary for Long and Short weeks South America Cruises.
