haha go ahead...i'm sure you'll have a great time.

I think i have some interior and deck pics i can put up...

Its a shame they arent returning to Adelaide. Its such a vibrant city (despite its reputation as Australia's second or third hole!).

pungpui/bmajor or anyone else who travelled on star this summer- can you tell me whether there was tipping onboard? or did they just incorperate it into your fares/drinks tab etc?

Thanks in advance

yea that picture was taken on a harbour ferry cruise i took just before boarding. I cant remember what it was called but I boarded it near the cruise terminal...if that helps!

As for tipping, there is an automatic $US10 per person per day of your cruise automatically added to your shipboard account. You can cancel that at anytime if you wish. You can also personally give crewmembers cash, just as you would in a hotel (they dont seem to object!). We chose to enclose large sums of money in a Princess envelope (you can get them at the pursers desk) with a note of thank you.

Hope that helps!

re tipping .....
We did the same as you,
but noted that when the envelope was handed over,to the waiter,
he wrote our table no. on it,
then passed it over to the pool.....
Well thats freestyle cruising!!!!!

Thankyou both for that info...

being an aussie tipping isnt a very big part of our lives! i feel princess should maybe include the tips in the fares in future when positioning ships downunder!

Fingers crossed- Sapphire Jan 6!!

unfortunately i dont think that will happen! I believe even Pacific Sky doesnt include any tips in their cruise fare. I remember reading somewhere (probably in this forum) that Holland America or something actually includes gratitudes in their fares and doesnt encourage tips on board.

While i was onboard though, I did pick up all the Princess brochures for the 2004-2005 season (The American addition) and was shocked that they were so thick! Pages and pages filled with pictures and tips on cruising, what to bring, full deck plans, everything!

Now in comparison to what garbage we get here in Australia, its a whole era away! I thought it was around the world...and I'm not happy that we are discriminated against since we dont get these sort of tips, early bird discounts or love boat discounts.

I dont think we can even order them here!

I would have to agree! i cant see them sending any brochures like that down here -

i did however download a 12Mb pdf brochure for Australia/South America 2004/5 - its an american version but it far more detailed then the 5 page brochure they have here in oz for the sapphire princess!

Try ordering a brochure off the Princess web site - you might be lucky.

P&O Australia happily sends their brochures to the US, so does P&O Cruises (UK), and Seetours.

Again, starting with unfortunately, i have tried on numerous occasions with both princess.com and pocruises.com to send brochures from the UK and USA and have received absolutely nothing. It seems that they arent too interested in Australian customers, pretty much limiting us to the yahoo Pacific Sky, Pacific Sun, and Pacific Princess in terms of marketing.

Thanks for the input though!

pungpui - give P&O UK a try again. I have always been successful in obtaining the UK brochures, just by ordering from their website, and they arrive in around a week or so.

Now Princess USA - that's another matter - they won't post their "full" brochure outside of the US - pity!

I imagine our Canadian friends, at least, can get it?

Anyhow, it's awfully stingy of them to save the real brochures for Americans... I suppose their excuse is that P&O UK markets them in the UK, Seetours in Germany, and P&O Australia in Australia, and that they all have their own brochures for Princess, but all of those are very abbreviated.

In contrast, P&O UK, P&O Australia, and Seetours will gladly send their brochures here and presumably anywhere else. This is because, of all reasons, they are not marketed here!

Similarly though, Cunard will not send me a British brochure because there is an American one; Costa will not send me an Italian brochure because there is an American one, etc.

So you are best off getting foreign brochures if that cruise line isn't marketed in your country at all; though a few cruise lines (example, Phoenix Riesen) have actually refused to send brochures overseas. And judging by the postage rates and the fact that I'm not really a prospective passenger I can't blame them .

I have taken your advice robyn and requested some brochures from pocruises.com and this time, hopefully they will come!

As bad as i may sound by saying this, and judging from what robyn said, 'won't post their "full" brochure outside of the US', personally i believe that Princess USA discriminates against everyone else? Australia and the UK (supposedly) sends their local brochures to America and in return? Nothing!

The same can be said for their captains circle club thingo...currently only open to USA and Canadian residents ONLY...how discriminantary is that! That means we never get any of the perks such as the captains cocktail party, but more importantly, member only discounts.

Another thing, seeing from the brochures, USA and Canadian customers get an early bird discount and love boat discount or something...I booked the Star Princess cruise 11 months in advance and got nothing!

I did ask the Captain's Cirle desk host if we could join the club so to speak, she said not currently but in 2 or 3 months it will be made available to residents around the world. They probably say that to everyone who asks! If it is true, well at least its a non-discriminatory step!

pungpui - don't get me started! No matter how many cruises we take with Princess - we can't join the Captains Circle - and as you say, absolutely no benefits, onboard or otherwise.

Ditto for P&O UK with their World Cruise sectors. The newly formed Portunus Club (ex POSH club) for P&O UK -doesn't count any of these sectors as a cruise ( go figure). And no point in trying to get any benefits with P&O Australia - as they don't recognise any past passengers - no loyalty club, no benefits - again on board or not!
Suppose you can do that if you have a virtual monopoly down here.

There - I've had my whinge for the day and feel better (sort of)

pungpui...last month on board Star Princess I suggested to the Captains Circle desk lady that
their policy restricting membership to only North American cruisers was discrimination of the worst kind. It didn't get me very far, but at least I was able to make the point! I'm also sure I was by no means the first to express that view to her. One benefit offered to Captains Circle was free internet use on board, which I would most certainly have used. The membership is now just a two tiered affair, Gold status after the first cruise, Platinum after the fifth. But, for those like me with ten previous Princess cruises...nothing!! I emailed P&O (UK) late last year asking for confirmation that we would receive the "whole host of on board benefits" described in their 2004 and 2005 brochures, which also states "If you have cruised with us at some point since 1 September 2000 then you will already be a member of the Portunus Club. In which case, the moment you step on board you will be able to receive the benefits" So far I have not had the courtesy of a reply even though the same brochures invite email enquiries which they say will be atended to by their "dedicated team for all club queries" It may sound cynical but, from past experience, I am expecting to be treated by P&O on Aurora shortly with the same discrimination as Princess. The message seems to be..if you don't live in the UK don't even bother to ask!!

Exactly bmajor! Pathetic isn't it? I don't understand how P&O UK can not count any World Cruise sector as a "cruise" - seeing as most of them, and particularly your upcoming one on Aurora are longer than most cruises from Southampton!

It seems like the "Captains Circle" syndrome and I think both "clubs" are discriminatory against anyone not from UK or USA.

Question - do other lines under the Carnival group also seemingly discriminate?

While it doesn't discourage me from cruising with them (can't really think of anything that would ) it would be great to receive some recognition.

Let's hope the information given to pungpui of at least Captain's Circle being available to us in 2 to 3 months is correct. With my "Tahitian Princess" cruise coming up in June -I might be lucky!

World Cruise sectors do count as days towards Portunus Points. Even one of the "examples" in the Portunus Club guides says " Dorothy is a seasoned P&O cruisers traveller and for many years has enjoyed at least 3 cruises a year. She started the new year in style sailing for 60 nights on a major part of Oriana's world cruise. Since then she has had 3 holidays adding another 41 nights to her total and another...bla blah....... giving a balance of 1570 points."
The 60 nights were included.
So you should be getting the points. Did you get a Portunus statement a while back? July time I think..
I was not amused.. It was for my husband and children.. I was not included!! I sent off the amendment form, but you hear nothing until the next statement due in April.
Pam
I am assuming you don't have a guide?
In the Q&A's it says
"I am an overseas member, how do the benefits relate to me?
Ans:- Members lliving abroad will receive their points statement and all editions of Wavelength, the qtly mag, but will not receive the Portunus club cruises leaflets or new brochures. brochures showing fares in your local currency should be obtained from your local TA. All onboard benefits will be exactly the same."

A Wavelength arrived not long before Christmas.. di you get one?

Pam

Yes lets hope that the lady is right! She said that if we get anything in the mail between now and the next few months regarding membership to the Captain's Circle thingo it will be useless till the date it starts...so it wasnt sort of an excuse type thing to get ride of the question! She actually provided more details than 'in a few months'.

But wouldnt this type of program change be planned ages ahead? In that case wouldnt bmajor have been told only a couple of weeks before myself?

One more thing...why is it that for the 27 November 2004 cruise aboard Diamond Princess in the Mexican Riviera:

- The Princess Cruises Caribbean & Mexico (incl. Mexican Riviera) 2004/2005 brochure advertises a Lido/Caribe Balcony cabin for $US999

- When i convert from $US to $AUD, it turns out to be $AUD1296.89

-P&O Australia's advertised 'special' price for the exact same grade is $AUD1471

The same can be said for every other grade on that cruise:

US brochure: $US679 for the top grade inside cabin

My calculations from US to AUD is 881.47

P&O Australia's advertised figure is $AUD1025

Is this yet again more discrimination??

If this is the case, can book directly with Princess USA??

PamM..once again you have provided a detailed and
interesting response. Thank you. We have never received either a Portunus statement or the quarterly magazine and, as a consequence, have never had the opportunity to read the guidelines you refer to. It all seems very encouraging, and I will certainly use the information when I discuss the matter further with P&O.
Pungpui...I doubt you will ever be able to reconcile
quoted fares in US dollars with other currencies.
Cruises are marketed and price weighted in different areas. These US fares you quote and the Australian equivalents would have been fixed some time ago. The rapid appreciation of both the NZ and Australian dollar so far this year should theoretically make the Australian dollar fare even cheaper, but this seldom seems to be the case. The
fares we are quoted in New Zealand and Australia
appear to be pitched at a currency conversion rate much more favourable to the cruise lines. I would be surprised if you were able to book direct with Princess, I think they would be much more likely to refer you to your local travel agent.

robyn and bmajor i read your posts with disbelief!

Yes is it true that full membership and benefits of the Captains Circle club are only available to US and Canadian residents, however passengers from other countries such as Australia and New Zealand who have sailed with Princess or P&O are entitled to ALL the onboard benefits after registering their information with the Captains Circle host!

bmajor i especially can't beleive the response you got onboard Star Princess considering i was on the Very Next Cruise.... was the captains circle host lady Liza by any chance? I went and saw her the day i boarded after being advised to do so by my TA and after she recorded all my other cruises she awarded me with the level of CC benefits according, this meant i was a Platinum member and recieved a new platinum room/charge card, a bottle of champagne in the cabin, a new platinum name tag on our "letter box", an invite to the captains circle cocktail party as well as an afternoon tea in the wheelhouse and ofcourse that free internet you mentioned! which is the only way i was able to post while i was onboard, i certainly wouldnt have paid for it. Oh and we also used the captains circle facilities in the wheelhouse on disembarkation day.

She even awarded my travel partner with the Platinum even though they were only entitled to gold because she didnt think it was fit to discriminate between us!

Infact Liza couldnt have been more helpful and i found her friendly and helpful in all mny dealings with her. When i joined there were many other Aussies doing the same thing and she said all Australians and New Zealanders can simply register each time onboard, its just there comupter system doesnt allow us to be permanently recorded and recieve all the post outs, specials etc.

This almost works in your favour as they have no record of your actual cruises there is nothing to stop you making a few up and getting platinum membership, which i know a few people did lol, here we have it over the Americans as Princess knows exactly what youve done!

And from what my TA has told me the same is true of P&O UK, simpy register your details once onboard to recieve FULL entitlements (for that cruise only) etc...

SO for future reference, make sure you sign up on day 1 and enjoy the priveleges YOU DESERVE!
