While browsing the ships in Miami today with the Miami Port Cam I noticed something strange behind the funnel/lounge of the Majesty of the Seas. Turns out it is the rock wall which they plunked down in the middle of the deck. Must be interesting to watch the climbers from the lounge.

I'll say it again... it looks stupid and has no place on a ship. I have been on that ship (pre-rockwall) and the Sovereign a few times. Isn't that where the basketball was?

Ahhh…the Monolith from 2001 a space odyssey

I am not against rock walls as such. They make good use of the funnels dead-space. After all these are NOT ships they are floating resorts. But Surely that is not it’s final location?

Yes, it is.

Aside from it being ugly, it blocks the view aft from the wonderful Viking Crown Lounge.

Thats a stupid place to put it,not that it should be there in the first place.I dont think people are booking cruises because of a rock climbing wall.Im sure they could have found somewhere else to put it though.

Trust me some people ARE stupid enough to book cruises because of a rock climbing wall or ice-skating rink. It is pretty much why we now have Mass market cruise lines attracting a bad crowd, on the Norwegian Dawn vandals broke the hand off a statue and a couple elevator buttons.

Although it is at the rear of the golf course, it MUST reduce the area avaiable for golf.

The wall is located on deck 12 while the "Sports Court" is on deck 11.

I hate it. It's so much of an afterthought and it looks it. At least on the new ships the wall was designed to be there so it doesn't take away from their profile.

Years ago, RCCL boasted about the Viking Crown lounge and it's wonderful 360-degree view. In one stupid move, they did away with a feature that helped them establish their identity......

I wonder how many passengers elect to use the wall in comparision to the number of passengers who visit the Viking Crown.

however much i would like to say its great, the truth is, its not. on the voyager and radiance class ships it blends in, not an "after thought", look to it. i think they should have either tryed to blend it in atleast, or just have it as a specialty feature for the voyager and radiance ships. bad move rccl

And the SOVEREIGN-class lounges were the ultimate evolution of the original concept - the only ones that were actually high up above the ship in the funnel, but also accessible through the regular stairtowers and lifts.

They were exceptionally impressive, wonderfully designed spaces, and it is unfortunate that passengers at the aft end of them will now have to stare at that thing, instead of having a wonderful view over the aft decks, the ship's wake, and the scenery beyond!

True for the Voyager class, not the Radiance class. If you look carefully at the funnel structure or if you ever see early sketches of the RD, you will notice it. It was added because of its success on VY.

Perhaps you're right. But it still looks better on the Radiance class than it does on the Sovereign class.

I think it is unfair calling people stupid if book a cruise on a ship with a varied range of sporting facilities, be it an ice rink a rock walls. These people are buying a place on a floating resort. They are not trying to buy into a recreation of the golden age of Ocean Liners, such as offered by the QM2.

Cruising today is all about choice. So I say lets have more ships, big ones, small ones, floating resorts and Ocean Liners.

I think it may have been better worded instead of using the word 'stupid'...something like this:

If someone books a cruise SOLELY and EXCLUSIVELY for the fact that it has the rock climbing wall and the ice skating rink, and then never uses it when onboard, then why book that ship? Why not book a Grand-Class or any other 100,000 ton floating resort/shopping mall?

What is it about the fact that a ship has a rock climbing wall and an ice skating rink that makes people book it, if they are not going to use it?

Probably the same reason that people take out annual membership of their local gym, but only go once!

Malcolm:

I agree. People book a cruise for different reasons...itinerary, ship, size, facilities, etc.

If they book a ship because it has a rock climbing wall, chances are, they're going to use it; and if they don't, big deal, it's their choice.

It doesn't make them stupid.

What I was referring to was the bad crowd the cruise lines have no attracted. It's awful. I do think the rock climbing wall thing is stupid, because it is a feature for community centers not cruise ships.

"I do think the rock climbing wall thing is stupid, because it is a feature for community centers not cruise ships."

Your point is well taken and respected. However, the competition between cruise lines and land based packages is incredibly fierce. Many lines are marketing their cruises as "vacations" in order to lure the potential first time cruiser. Many of the amenities found on today's cruise ships can be found ashore, and not just at community centers, but at all-inclusive resorts such as Sandals and SuperClubs. Every penny counts, and if a rock climbing wall or in-line skating course will help RCI fill their ships, then I say more power to them. If I don't like what a ship or line offers, I can choose something else.

I fault RCI for the placement of the rock climbing wall on the Sovereign-class because it destroys an otherwise wonderful view; it also sticks out like a sore thumb. I don't, however, find fault in the idea.

The "bad crowd" you refer to is nothing new. From the earliest liners to today's modern ships, including QM2, the number of those traveling in "steerage" (in terms of berths)
has, in most cases, exceeded those passengers
who can or are willing to pay more. And while the poor slobs in steerage sailing on Imperator in 1913 may not have had the social graces of those in first class, they were, just as today, the company's bread and butter.

I do understand your frustration in the statue being damaged on Norwegian Dawn. It makes me mad just to hear about it.

Thanks for the reply.

Russ
