Other yards to bid for Pride?
March 1, 2004

Pride of America’s insurers are considering asking other yards to tender for the ship's repairs and completion, German sources told Seatrade Insider. According to the sources, it is not certain that Lloyd Werft will win the bid to finish the vessel. Yard chief Werner Lüken vowed to complete the project following the Pride of America’s refloating last month.

Meanwhile, the important Lloyd Werft subcontractor Messrs Metall-und Bootsbau GmbH declared insolvency today, with 68 workers losing their jobs. By the end of last week, two other subcontractors had filed for insolvency, affecting 40 jobs. It is understood that the government aid approved by the Bremen senate for subcontractors affected by Lloyd Werft’s insolvency is complicated and difficult to obtain.

Pride of America remains in dry dock at Bremerhaven as investigations continue into the cause of the ship’s partial dockside sinking during a January 14 storm.

Hmmm interesting article.... I wonder who else would bid for the completion and if Llyod Werft looses this bid, will it be the fate of LW?

This ship (P of A), which was a political "pork barrel" congressional boondoogle, seems predestined for a sad future.

Will she ever be completed; and if so, who will cruise on/in her?

Another ripoff of the American taxpayer(getting ready to pay for Washington's colonial jingoism manifest in Iraq)!

Sorry for the political tag, but it is so frustrating!

It should be renamed "Embarrassment of America". Use her for target practice.

O If that happens it will be a huge loss. . I hope not too, but maybe if the P of America does become that came, maybe NCL will rebuild the BIG U or INDY!

Lloyd Werft wins 2 refurb contracts
March 2, 2004

Lloyd Werft has won contracts to refurbish two vessels: P&O Cruises’ Oriana, which will arrive in Bremerhaven on April 25, and Queen Elizabeth 2, scheduled for work starting on May 2.

Interesting isn't it? Lloyd Werft is insolvent but still can win contracts like this. Carnival has confidence in the German yard, why can't NCL and its insurers just give the go ahead and get the Pride of America finished?

Cheers everyone

According to the Werft website all 6 engines have already been restarted - surely a good sign?

Yes, six diesel engines running is a step in the right direction. Whether NCL and its insurer Basel Securitas agree is another thing. The matter is there are many people out there that had booked this ship specifically because she was new and now have been left without a cruise or had to rebook on the Pride of Aloha (Norwegian Sky). When is NCL going to make a decision? Give Lloyd Werft the contract and let's get here completed!!

Here is a link to the POA in Lloyd Werft's drydock where only recently the Costa Victoria stood while balconies and promenades were added:

Note the clay on her bulbous bow and hull...

Cheers

Keitaro, you jumped the gun. I typed in the wrong URL in the IMG tags and couldn't figure out why. The difference is when you use a Mac there isn't the aid of "Properties", you have to re-open the image in a new window and then use that address as the link for the image and not the first address in the image opened from the small pic (http://www.lloydwerft.com/d/grossbild/proj_am_24.htm). Sound confusing? Well it's not all the Mac's fault, it's also Microsoft's IE for the Mac (not the one for OS X, but the last version for 9.2.2). Sorry!

Cheers

Exactly why I think Macs are pain in the butt even in school! Luckily our school has Windows computers now too!

Actually there is nothing confusing about the Mac. It's Microsoft's products that are not up to scratch. Apple as a company have always been innovative, unfortunately only 5% of the world use it, so it hasn't got that market clout. Look at Beta vs VHS as a good example.

What OS do you use at school? Mac's OS X operating system is far superior to Microsoft’s buggy XP, or for that matter any of their products that have to be upgraded with patches. Bottomline is that Microsoft have the majority of users by the balls, correct?

If you don’t like the Mac, just keep it as an option. You’ll never know ‘wouldya’?

Anyway, back to Pride of America:

The clay is what POA hit when grounded. See the diagonal line across her bow? That’s the angle she listed to starboard. Luckily the wharf held at the same time she hit the floor or else she probably would have capsized!! Pity we can’t see her starboard side and the damage (maybe dents in her hull). Let’s hope new pictures crop up from somewhere.

Cheers

Another thing, the image of Pride of America's bow was taken with a wideangle lens so it doesn't give you the proper perspective of how her bow looks in real life. Still, it does give you an idea how top heavy POA is. If you didn't know she was a cruise ship you would think she was a FERRY!!

Cheers
