Any word yet on the auction? Apparently it was too late for Festival to stop and they were to open the bids today....

I am hoping that MSC gets the ship and puts her in Europe in time for this summer..

Seatrade is reporting that MSC has won the bid for Euro Vision, but Festival's lawyers are trying to stop the sale in the Barbados courts.

I'm just curious to know who else bid on her. Is RCI ever going to launch an European brand?

No any news about European Vision. Here in Italy, apart " Informare ", the media aren't much interested to the cruise bussiness.
I can just say that Mr Foschi, chairman of Costa Crociere, in a recent interview has said that European Vision isn't the right ship for Costa.... I suppose because she is a three classes ship... so the company will not buy her.
The current Festival situation is quite embarassing: the greek-italian company has even created a new web site, announcing several times the return of their ships to service....
One of my friend who lives at Genoa has told me that many persons involved with Festival now are working for Msc Cruises.

Fairplay today:

REPORTS conflict, but the auction of Festival Cruises' European Vision in Barbados may have gone forward and a new owner of the ship may be announced this afternoon. However, Festival claims that any ownership transfer of the ship is invalid and "we will sue everybody who took part in such steps," said Festival spokesperson Laura Gilli. She contends that the Barbados judge accepted Festival's motion that a hearing in Genoa must first be held on 21 April, involving Festival's claim for loss of business against the ship's French holding company. "It is possible that such an act [the auction] took place, but they should have waited for the decision of the Barbados court," said Gilli.

And fromBarbados' Nation News:

Ship sold - Saturday 17, April-2004
by JULIA RAWLINS

The impounded cruise liner European Vision has been sold.

The transaction relating to the sale was completed yesterday after an “in-chambers” hearing in the Court of Appeal.

Now it will be smooth sailing for the new buyers, Compania Naviera Armonia S.A., to complete the sale of the European Vision, which was seized in the Bridgetown Port on January 21.

Then it carried an outstanding debt of 7.5 million euros (about Bds $19.27 million) owed to the French economic group GIE Vision Bail and 1 700 passengers and 800 crew.

This came after last-minute efforts to block the sale of the 3 156- tonne, 824-foot Genoa-registered cruise liner failed yesterday.

Wednesday was the deadline for sealed bids to be submitted by prospective buyers.

But, on that day, the ship’s operators, Festival Crociere SpA, made an urgent application for a stay of execution, which was heard before Mr Justice Christopher Blackman. That hearing went into Thursday.

However, Mr Justice Blackman refused to grant the stay of execution and stated that the sale could go on. He also dismissed applications by the company for leave to go to the Court of Appeal for a stay of execution pending a hearing of appeal, and access to bids given to the Chief Marshal.

Late Thursday night Festival Crociere made an ex parte appeal for a stay of execution to Chief Justice Sir David Simmons.

The Chief Justice ordered that the Chief Marshal should not accept any bids for sale of the boat to the new company, or to sell the boat, until further ordered.

But yesterday that ruling was discharged after the vessel’s mortagee Credit Agricole Indosuez, through its attorneys Lex Caribbean, brought an application for that order to be discharged on the grounds that it would be prejudicial to them to further delay the sale of the boat.

In addition, the Solicitor-General’s Chambers, acting on behalf of the Chief Marshal, also argued that a contract had already formed when the Chief Marshal accepted the bid for the sale of the boat.

She also stated that the Chief Marshal should have been informed on Thursday night of the application.

As a result, Sir David granted the discharge of his former ruling and ordered that the sale was free to be completed because the cost factor of not selling the boat was too great.

In addition, he said, damages would have been an appropriate remedy open to Festival as opposed to the stay of execution.

I tend to think Tim is probably right on his post, The European Vision I believe has indeed been bought by MSC!! They are the only ones who would benefit the most from her and have the $$ to purchase her!!

Dont be surprised to see MSC emerge as the winning bid on the European Stars also when she is auctioned!

Can't say anything about Mistral though!

The EUROPEAN VISION has been aquired by Compania Naviera Armonia S.A. The bidders were interests controlled 100% by MSC Crociere.
So the vessel definitely goes to MSC.
No word about the other two remaining units. The EUROPEAN STARS might probably join her sister at MSC while the smaller MISTRAL seemed to be not so much interesting to MSC.
I doubt that Festival will have any chance to claim successfully against this auction.

I can sure see European Stars heading to MSC but the Mistral, well I would think maybe Star would be interested in her or possibly even someone to buy her and just charter her out?? But its hard to tell, She is one that its anyones guess, any predictions Tim about Mistrall? Has anyone even had an interest in her??

Names for MSC's new ships, I dont think they will rename them, just keep their same names, thats pretty in line with MSC's naming process since they entered the Cruise Market! I dont remember any ship except maybe Symphony which they changed the name on!

Also the Melody, Rhapsody and Monterey got their recent names when they entered the MSC-fleet. I do not hope and think the ship(s) will continue under the Festival-names, as it does not reflect the Italian style of MSC. Festival presented itself as an European cruiseline, while MSC goes for the 'Cruising Italian Style'-concept. It could end up with the Italian Vision and the Italian Stars ....

Imagine what a incredible addition the the MSC fleet is taking place already..Opera is coming up, probably 2 ex-Festival ships and two big flagships will arrive too if everything goes well. For me as a MSC-enthousiast it is great to see this, but I am pretty worried about the Mediterranean cruise market in the nearby future. Costa and MSC could end up as the only two mainplayers. That's not good at all.

Wasn't Pulmantur interested in the MISTRAL? Or were there only speculations before they got the SUPERSTAR ARIES?

The Monterey has been named Monterey for many many moons, she only has had one other name and I dont remeber what that was and it was whe she was first built, I think it was Pine Tree Mariner or Free State Mariner and she was built as a Freighter as well as her sister Mariposa sold in the early 70's to China!

THey were both converted in the 60's to passenger ships!
Yes the Rhapsody and Melody were renamed, and YES Italian Vision and Italian Stars are good name!

hi,
according to someone on a spanish cruiseforum, the Holiday Dream (R-6) would in winter do the route Brasil-Argentina, till the end of contract.
His source was "the Captain of the Holiday Dream", and he seems to have said that Pullmantur would buy 'Mistral'.

Interesting ?
Bye

Pullmantur seems to only go after ships that have domes over their swimming pools, does anyone know if Mistral has one! Cause the Pacific,Oceanic and SuperStar Aries all have domes over their pools I beleieve! I think Mistral would work well with Pullmantur, Im surprised Thomson never showed an interest??

Naming her Italian Vision? Where is the connection with MSC Cruises’ fleet? And Italian Stars? Assuming of course that European Stars goes the same way as her sister...

There were some names mentioned in an older thread... suggestions?

Cheers

Have read on another forum that the EUROPEAN VISION will become MSC ARMONIA, but maybe that is just speculation based on the name of the holding company...

Bad name!
We Yanks are globally known for mangling words, from our President on down. T/As, passengers, and press will call it "Amonia," without a doubt!...particularly in my native Boston, where the letter "r" is always in play..omit it here, insert it there.

Wait and see, or better yet, prove me wrong by not going for this name!

Thanks, Capain Rhone. I wanted to say the same

Isn´t SYMPHONY a nice name for the new MSC ship? Remember the older SYMPHONY ex ENRICO COSTA.

And now the crown of all music names: ORCHESTRA

Mariposa (now scrapped) and Monterey were originally built in the early 1950s as high speed single screw Mariner class freighters. They were laid up after a few years of service and purchased by Matson Line for Hawaii and South Pacific service. They were completely rebuilt into all 1st class cruise ships in Oregon, USA in 1956-57. They were in Matson servce until the early 70s and then transferred to Pacific Far East Line and eventually laid up in the late 1970s. Monterey had a lovely classic 1950s profile until rebuilt in the late 80s and like many rebuilt ships, departed the shipyard with a modified and ruined profile.
