RCI sell models of their ships onboard their ships. I’m surprised that other cruise lines do not do this, or do they?

I would imagine that they are a very popular gift?

I can't understand why ship models are not widely sold onboard. They are nice gifts and proves that you have cruised with that ship or that line. With so many sisters in the market now I really feel that every ship should sell its own model.

Anyway those of you who have sailed with STAR recently may find the paper ship model sold onboard. STAR also have "Star Ship Radio" on sale, which is a radio in the shape of Star Pisces.

Also some ships have models made of something like china right?

Looking at what is available on ebay, and what I remember from my recent cruises, I think you can buy a model of the Celebrity Millennium class, all RCI ships, some NCL ships, most Carnival Ships, and a few Costa vessels. Unfortunately the models are not of great quality, but they only price out at about $20.00, so not that bad.

You can buy model kits is most model stores and toy shops. Unfortunately there is only one “real” modern cruise ships available as a model kit that you can assemble yourself and that is Revell’s miniship of the AIDA in scale 1:1250. Other kits available are classic liners like QE2, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Canberra, Mauretania and soon two QM2 models in scale 1:600 and one in scale 1:400 (really huge)

Hope it helps,

Onno

Since my model shop quit selling ocean liner models years ago, I have bought most of my models on EBAY. I have a large collection that goes back to the 1950s, all in their original beautiful boxes. As Onno stated, there are the classics such as QE2, Canberra, QM and soon to be released QM2. On EBAY you can find (sometimes) the discontinued models of such liners as s/s France, Argentina and Brasil, President Cleveland, United States etc. Expect to pay a very high price for s/s France, Argentina and Brasil if you fine them, as high $100.00 US or more in some cases. Good hunting!!

For anyone interested Dragon Waves is a new line making models of ships.

At the moment they only have the Carnival Pride and Carnival Spirit, however, the models are high quality and fairly reasonable at $40.

Costa Cruise Lines offers a model of their ship as a gift to the Costa Club members since 2001.
They are metal ones, quite pretty.
I have the models of Costa Riviera, Tropicale, Europa, Romantica and Allegra.
Some years ago there were also avalaible models in plexyglass. I have one of Costa Marina.

Have a look at the ship models found in the shop of Omar III (ex-Sun Viking):

They are not for sale but they are there! Are they left behind by Royal Caribbean?

I doubt they were left by RCI because why would they sell HAL, NCL, and the other models. I can see the NORWEGIAN SEA and NORWEGIAN CROWN's left by Star Cruises though...

Yes, it is really strange to see models from several lines placed together.
Anyway, was she still with STAR when STAR acquired NCL?

Are the RCI models metal or China?

Also, what scale are they. They look like 1:1200 or 1:1250?

Those models are 1:1250 scale made usually from metal. They would be relatively expensive, starting at around 70 Euros approximately. See www.steelnavy.com/1250 for a collectors site and www.wiedling.de for a very good dealer.

I bought the Airfix "1969" model of QE2 in the "QE2 Shop" in 1995 - but since then have not seen "do it yourself" kits aboard QE2. There are small metal (like the Triang) models of QE2, Mary, Liz and Titanic for sale in the Bookshop but these are very price-y .

I wish a good size model of QE2 with her fat funnel would come out - the best I have are my two 1 meter models of her - 1972 and the other is in her post-Falkland scheme, but none since 1987 (the year she became whole again).

Chris.

I just bought my 3rd cruise ship model from Carnival, the IMAGINAION. I love buying them. I also have a few resin models, and the Mercury heavy models that Costa had made for their ships. And yes, on our last cruise on the SS NORWAY, I managed to get a model of her as well.
