Any ship would look like a rust bucket if it did,nt get a paint job in three years. The Independence is one of the last beautiful classic liners left. She has a unique counter strern and incredibly attractive tiered lido decks that are one of her trademarks along with twin streamlined funnels. She also had a 35 million dollar refit in 1994 where most of her systems were completely upgraded as well as new modern cabins added. If she had a new paint job as well as had new lifeboats installed, she would be one of the best looking ships afloat.

Are these photos online somewhere? A couple of CruiseTalkers photographed her a few months ago, and while she was in need of some attention, she was far from what I'd consider a rustbucket.

As to scrapping her, NCL has not had much to say of late, one way or the other. Of the 3 NCL classics, she'd be the easiest to put back in service. NCL has already said Norway is history, and the United States would need an interior and who knows what the mechanicals are like after all this time.

Anyone know Indy's prospects under SOLAS?

Mr_Cunard you don't seem to like the SS Independence so occurs when she has some outer rust on her hull you would say she is a "rust bucket", her stern is so much more beautiful then QE2 since I do not know any other large ship afloat with that kind of stern nowdays...

It is one of the last remaining classis liners of the fifties, and as such very important.
I have never seen her, nor sailed onher, but her disappearance would be a loss, and reintroduction in service a good thing.

I must agree however that her stern was allready antiquated when the ship was new. Why such a stern in the 50's!!

It is strictly a matter of your opinion which you seem to have many based little on thought or evidence. What makes you such an authority? It is grandiose that you took a handle of Mr. Cunard.

You seem to have the developmental level of an 11 year old.

The counter stern was the trademark of the line, if I remember correctly. And the clung to it even in the 50s.

Thank you Keitaro,

I enjoyed seeing your pictures of this grand lady.

I personally think that she looks like she has handled 3 years of neglect very well. What rust I saw was light. I forgot she broke her mast off on some bridge otherwise she looks good.

Well then what gives you the power of authority then? And frankly it is a matter of opinion All I’m saying is I don’t not see what all the fuss is about and yes I have baced a lot of thought and consideration into this opinion! The Queen Mary 1 is a grand old ship and looks amazing but this is like 1/2 the size and not even an icon or the maritime world, maybe to America but not to other parts of the world! I have only heard about it today and from first impressions and seeing some inside pics this ship is not really a ship that I would consider to travel on although she was the last true ocean liner to be built in the U.S.A and operated under a company that went bankrupt. But there are still nicer ocean liners that are around form the 50’s! Such as the Queen Mary 1… now that’s a classic ocean liner! If it was a trademark then why has it got a resemblance to the TITANIC!

Cheers

Seems we agree on that. However as always everyone has their own thoughts. Independence is so very unique and with some love and care would be a real gem among a world full of white boxes.

I wonder what she would look like with a darkened hull (gray or perhaps navy) and a smart buff or blue on the funnels.

The "Titanic" stern was used on many liners, Aquitania, Mauretania, Olympic, Homeric - but in today's modern world it is a trademark to Inde' because no one else has it.

Draikar: I don’t think saying that the stern is nicer then QE2's is correct, it just suits the vessel. QE2 with a stern like Independence would look out of place, ditto independence with a QE2 stern.

Chris.

I hope I did not sound like I was putting QE2 down, I do like QE2 but I think Independence is every bit a classic liner as QE2 is in her own right.

She has historical importance to many. She was a regular-docked along New York's Luxury Liner row for nearly two decades. I have been on her twice and even though she is a 30,000 tonner, she has a majesty to her. She was featured in print and entertainment ads over the years and was incredibly well built. Those old U.S. built liners were engined and built to last 50-60 years of regular hard service. She also has had to been kept in top mechanical condition because her U.S. registry demanded it. On one cruise in her later life, she reached 25+ knots during a dash to Honolulu using her 50 year old turbines-with little vibration! Mr. Chandris of Chandris Lines who purchased many second hand ships always preferred the over-engineered U.S. built liners as they were built to incredible standards. Just look at the now departed Britanis as an example. And finally, just because she is a lovely example of a ship that combined the best of classic steamship design with a 1950s modern twist.

I would love to see the INDEPENDENCE and UNITED STATES sailing together under a U.S. flagged line, just not NCL.

CGT: Why not NCL? You make it sound a worse fate than the breakers.

Chris Cunard- The Indy originally had a black hull, which was a darker color than white. Just look for an older picture of her and, even though she has had rebuilds, you will get an idea of what she looks like. Unles you mean grey...

I think that the Indy is worthy of being saved from the breakers and is hardly a rust bucket! Of course, I've never sailed on her nor have I seen her in person, but I still can tell she has nice lines on the outside. I also think the fact that she is still in pretty good condition is a testament to how well she was built. I would very much like to sail on her if she is returned to service.

Come on, you know that right along side Royal Caribbean the other line I love to hate is NCL.

In my opinion the classic early 20th century stern does not fit the rest of the 1950’s built liner. I don’t see any continuity in her external appearance. Basically SS Indy is a misfit. As for scrapping or retaining her, I make no comment, I’ll leave that to those who know her better.

Cheers
