Guys, I need help! I was trying to explain to a freind the 'curse of the vista class' (one ship fits all) but do not have any images.

Could you please post me some images of the various variations including the QV Impression!

Thanks,

Or compare this photo I took last Friday with Onno's photo of C Legend in his previous post:

Probably of all the vista class based ships the Carnival and Costa ones are design wise the most similar (outside and in)

Once the Arcadia (ex-Victoria 1) is finished it probably will look very similar to the HAL vista’s (considering it was ordered first as a HAL ship)

I haven’t got much hoop that the Victoria Vista (second one) will look fundamentally different then the HAL vista’s and Arcadia. My guess is it will be another Vista like the one ordered before. We will see!

BTW maybe a stupid question but why is it called Vista class? Was it named after a first ship that had the name Vista (Like with the Millennium class) . Or is it just a name given to this type of ship.

It would be interesting to know were the name came from.

Question about vista class-

Ive always wondered why the balcony cabins are indented... is it just due to the position of life boats?

In my opinion this is an ugly trait- i prefer the balconies to all line up. similarly on the coral/island princess

i also dont like the balcony configuration on grand class - caribe/dolphin jutting out!

on the other hand i do like what RCI are doing... for example with navigator of seas- with the slight curves in the middle!

[judgement based on photos alone- unfortuneatly havent had the chance to see them in real life!]

I heard that the 'Vista' name refers to the large amount of natural light and glass each ship has.

I don't agree with you Vista class looks far better than the Costa / Carnival ships (they have a other project name) The ship looks much sleeker with the open forward superstructure. The lines are much more flowing than on Carnival and Costa.

To me too...

only when all seen together, only then one can understand the blandness of it all, and possibly the lost chances, and the dispair at our times.

A bit eerie.

On the other hand, once built, they have different histories, and trajects, and passengers, and crew, etc. Do they stay all like halfsisters, or do they get an own "soul" (ships are often said to have an own personality) is this also the case with these ships ? (btw how many Vistas are there in total ?)

Victory and liberty ships were also all the same...
still...

Hi Ben,

Not the meaning of the individual names of the HAL vista ships, but what the general name of this class of ships means (as in “Vista class”)

I like the HAL vistas more than Carnivals but the P&O version is not bad either , Cunard version was just OK but I 'm waiting for the new design for Queen Victoria.

For what this is worth, John Maxtome Graham was asked recently at a talk he gave at the World Ship Society NY branch about QUEEN VICTORIA and her superstructure, and he said that QV will have an ocean liner style superstructure and look like a cross between QM2 and QE2.

I know he does not work for Cunard, but he does have his connections.

Mmm, again looking backwards...

real oceanliners are bold and daring in design. That s why there are still famous, years after they have gone the way of the dodo.

RCI's 'Radience class' beats the Vista in terms of glass and views!

I always have to ask this of people who complain of "Looking Backwards". Please share with the group, through linked or posted photos, of what you think a ship of "today" should look like. You can use pictures from hotels, restaurants etc.

"Real" oceanliners are "bold and daring in design?" (however you define it). Who says?

"Real oceanliners are bold and daring in design".

Respectfully, I can't agree with that statement. When the original QM was first introduced in '36, there was nothing bold or daring about her at all. Compared to NORMANDIE, or even REX, CONTE di SAVIOA, BREMEN, AND EUROPA, she was rather plain.

There were plenty "real" ocean liners that weren't ground-breaking in design.

Respectfully, you are wrong.

The QM's decor was very controversial in her day. Cunard had chosen to use the then very new 'Art Deco' style, which was quite brave. O.k. it has become a design classic, but at the time not everyone approved.

In fact when the Queen visited her, she was quoted as saying her interiors were not as bad as she had feared. She had preferred the Georgian and Victoria style that had been used in Ocean Liners in the past.

The QE2 of course had cutting edge decor and a superstructure design. The funnel was completely original design element. In fact so outrageous were the 1960's Austin Power’s style interiors, that a lot of it does not match modern ideas of taste. Therefore much of it has been replaced in numerous refits, with Art Deco and Georgian styles, to name a few!

The Queen Mary 2 has a livery and funnel lifted from a ship 35 years old. She is the first ever Cunarder to have retro decor too, instead of modernist. That in itself must say something about modern tastes and a lack confidence. Even her name is unoriginal and those of many of the public rooms, too. To all intensive purposes she is a 'retro' designed ship. It is only her scale that is ground-breaking.

Cunard fans will not want to here this, but in just about every way RCI's 'Voyager' class is more 'bold and daring'!
