With recent news about the Queen Victoria (the first Vista class) being finished as P&O’s Arcadia and Cunard reordering a new ship to bear the name Queen Victoria, I have let my imagination go and came up with some possibilities how this ship could look like. She most likely will be a vista class based ship or a spin off, so my starting point was to get a mix between the Vista class elements and elements that represent the Cunard identity to create a unique ship with a Cuanrd family look to it.

I have posted the studies in an article on my site if you go to the following link: Cruising the 21st Century you can find the new article, titled “a Vista Queen for cruising”, in the left menu (it is indicated with the word New).

Enjoy the article!

Wow!

I love it! Its got a nice sleet look, and I like the way the balconies are seperated into 3 different "areas." The bow reminds me of a Radiance class vessel, and the aft is more like a Spirit/Vista class...

Nice Job...

Considering this is a "Vista" basis, considering you had to incorporate a very large number of balconies (unfortunately included in the aft section as this is the case of most very modern cruise ships) as well as some "QM2 family" elements, I'd say, aesthetically speaking, this is probably one of the best result you could obtain.

Congratulation, great job.

Considering the above constrainsts, my mark (as if I was qualified for that): 18/20!

Looks good! I like what appears to be a rounded of stern. I also like the radius corners to soften her profile. The only thing I don't care for is the funnel (sorry Onno). I reminds me of Sagafjords' with QE2's wind deflectors. I prefer a more verticle design (not really a QE2 copy) maybe more of a cross between Oriana's and Aurora's with a smallish wind deflector and the traditional Cunard red colors with a black top in proportion to the lower orange/red base. Just my opinion.

Hi Onno,

Excellent study!
In my judgement the longer bow and the QM2 terraced decks work the best, both functionally and esthetically.

Longer bow have the ship suffer less damage in storms. Even with Satellite weather systems you cant avoid every one.

One feature I hate about boxboats is the lack of a proper fantail and the terracing. The proper faintail and terracing creates a "zen" with the sea.

The traditional QE2 funnel is my favorite

Hoi Onno.

Fantastic really i think the ship looks fantasic specialy the front and the funnel. Great work.

Sadly the real ship would be less spectaculair than yours.

The Vista class ships would have look better if they chance the deckhouses completly per line. As what you dith with your study.

Once again GREAT WORK Onno.

Just wanted to add: keep that funnel!...perfect and aesthetically far better (though more wind catching) than the traditional QE2's one for the ship you've drawn, in my opinion.

Onno,
Thanks for sharing your hard work. Your version of QV looks great! If only that were going to be the case in real life. We can dream though.

Thanks for all your comments! Since it is a study I gave several solutions, the above one is simply my favourite. I went for the “Sagafjord” type funnel because I had used it a couple of years ago on a ship design also named Queen Victoria (I was first then came Cunard!) I liked it and thought it was fitting to use it again. The funnel is also a point of identity that has a lot to do with taste, so again several outcomes on my site. I started my studies with the thought that balconies are not an enemy of aesthetics. Veranda’s can be used as a “decorative” element in the whole ship designing stage and not only as an economical necessity.

We will see how the real QV will turn out to be, lets not forget Cunard said she will be more consistent with the ocean liner style! (Not that I think that that has a lot of meaning.)

What can I say ... wow! The graphic at the bottom of the three together is my favorite. And I like the funnel. Actually, I also like the shorter funnel as well simply because it's different. I also like the terraced design of the stern. Hell, I can't find one thing I DON'T like about it!

I really think someone at Cunard/Carnival Corp should see this. In a world of generic exteriors, this would certainly give QV the unique status a Queen deserves ... cruise ship or not.

EXCELLENT design, Onno. Bravo.

Russ

For those who want to compare my version with the Carnival Vista version, here is a graphic of the Carnival Pride.

Beautiful design,
I specially like the funnel, and the stern/complete aft part of the ship, which is a bit terraced - do you imagine straight deck ends aft, or more balcony- like, around a pool on the lowest one ?

Is the windshield necessary ?

With a bit creativity...

tnx

I like your Queen Victoria. It would me nice if Carnival put you on there payroll, maybe then they could build nicer looking ships.

Hi Johan,

I intended the stern section to have straight deck ends like associated with the Vista class. I had in mind to create a bit of Oriana/Aurora terraced aft decks but I wanted to give a more realistic outcome. I could imagine the most upper deck of the aft section has an opening or well with a pool in the middle.

Of course the study that has the QM2 terraced aft decks has an open look, but then it misses a big volume space that could be used for cabins.

I used the wind shield to create a natural barrier so that the curved wall underneath it had to stop their. I tried “knitting” an end to the curve but some how it did not look satisfying to me

I have a Queen Victoria question. With this whole transfer of the first one to P&O, Is the shipyard going to base the Quen Victoria off an existing hull design or are they going to start from scratch so the look of the ship could change?

That is the million dollar question we all ask, I think and many here also is that she will be an existing hull design but I believed modified. Cunard seems to be tighter then a clam on this news...
