SUPERB!

Years ago the term "presence" was applied to audio recordings.

This is spine-tingling PRESENCE!!

Andd, of course, QM2's whistle sounds different when one is behind the ship, as in the second recording.

And MP's whistle is no slouch, either.

Another GREAT offering..Thanks.

I know that this question has been asked, and probably answered before, so forgive the potential repetition. But I am confused here.

I note with pleasure the traditional plume of steam from the whistle, visible in these really great photos.

1. Is the steam for effect only? If so, from whence does it come? It is a great effect and completely convincing. Look carefully at the video and you will see what I mean.

OR,

2. Or does the steam actually actuate (activate?) the original Queen Mary whistle? Which is even better! Also, from whence does it come?

Which?

It is actual steam, but not enough to power the whistle. The actual whistle is powered by compressed air and the steam comes from a lower pressure source to provide the visual effect. This information from a source who was involved in the construction of QM2.

Here's a link to a previous discussion on the subject.

Simply fantastic!! Thanks so much for sharing. Now I have something to listen to when I get homesick for QM2. When standing on deck and hearing that whistle in person, it really sends shivers down the spine. I love it!

For those of you wondering about the difference in sound between the original Queen Mary whistle and the copy whistle on either side of QM2's funnel, here's a clip that Pam recorded while both whistles were being tested. Click here (it's big, 4.0 mgb).

Can you tell which one is the original?

Thanks Pam.

Oh wonderfull those whistles the Marco Polo whistle is just as impressif as that frome QM2.

It showes that there is friendship among those who sail in ships. And that showes between MP and QM2.

It give me the shivers.

The lower-pitched one on the starboard side is the original.

Amazing.....so does this mean that there are two buttons, one for each horn, do they usually blow both at the same time?

Also what does the "horn blowing" mean between the QM2 and MP?

Actually there are four whistles on QM2; two on the funnel (as shown in the photo), one on the mast, and one on the bow. So they would need 4 "buttons" to operate them independently.
