I wanted to know if anyone knows for sure if the Horizon and Zenith will actually receive the much talked about refurbishment which included the possible addition of balconies? I may be cruising on the Zenith next year to Bermuda and I was curious to see if she will be getting another makeover. Since Royal Caribbean is on the refurb kick maybe it will go through?

Both ships will recieve nothing more extensive than the perfunctory carpeting & upholstery maintenance during their upcoming drydocks. The relatively massive "rejuvination" project seems to have been put on hold due to the major costs involved.

I expect these ships will be sold in the near future with delivery to new owners upon completion of their contractual obligations to the Government of Bermuda.

Tim, can you give me some details about the contract with the Government of Bermuda? I don't think I ever heard of this?

Keitaro,

As Bermuda is (or at least used to be) selective about the ships it allows to call, all ships serving Bermuda on a regularly scheduled basis may only do so once a contract is signed between the cruise line(s) and the Government. Bermuda provides the line(s) and ship(s) guaranteed berthing rights and the cruise lines provide a promise of "x" number of passengers.

When the majority of ships sailing were mid-sized, competition to sail to Bermuda was quite keen and this granted A) Bermuda the right to control or actually select the ships sailing to the island and B) the cruise lines who were granted contracts a certain amount of prestige. And many ships such as Sea Venture/Island Venture, Nieuw Amsterdam/Noordam, Horizon/Zenith and Homeric/Atlantic were specifically designed for/with the Bermuda trade.

With the gross onslaught of mega ships, no more mid-sized ships are being built and this has resulted in Bermuda being strong-armed to now grant contracts to the new Carnival ships and the soon to be lengthened Enchantment of the Seas.

Bermuda used to be the only feasible warm weather destination for cruise ships cruising from northeast and mid-atlantic ports. As the ships have now grown larger and faster, Bermuda has been losing market to these new ships. And since the lines won't build ships to fit Bermuda's requirements for size and limited passenger capacity, they are being forced to accept these much larger ships and forcing the mid-sized ships from the marketplace.

Tim, feeling long-winded.

How does the Carnival Dysentary class and RCL Voyuer class fit through the channel into Hamilton?

The larger ships are berthed at the Naval Dockyard and do not enter into Hamilton. When I was CD on Horizon in early / mid 90s, we jockeyed between Hamilton & St Georges with Dreamward (post -lengthened Norwegian Dream) & Norwegian Majesty. Meanwhile the deeper draft Meridian stayed in the Dockyard.

I am surprised that HAL has not sent one of the S-Class ships to Bermuda. The island's feel would seem to fit well with HAL's demographics. Tim, has Oceania considered sending one of their ships there, especially when Nautica comes online next year?
