Hello all,
I have been speaking to a friend who has recently just disembarked form QE2 on a 19 night cruise around the med to Egypt etc, He told me that security was VERY tight and police escorts for all the PAX was essential for viewing the pyramids and even body guards were employed! I was wondering what ppl think of this as a vacation! I would personally love to see the pyramids of Egypt but going in such a time of trouble I don’t think would be my cup of tea! What’s your thoughts?

Cheers

This is Not new. In 1997 a number of tourists were shot and killed at the Valley of the Kings. Fortunately I'm not aware of any major incidents in recent years.

The security is to protect the safety of the tourists, although it has the effect of making one feel more threatened.

I can highly reccomend the sights of Cairo and I personally would not let this put me off. I assume that you would rather go with protection than without?

Hi there,

we had this with the ASTOR already in 1998. All excursion-busses left together in a line, escorted by police in front, back and on the sides.
Also during the visits, passenger-groups were always surrounded by policemen.

There are three alternativesin this trouble world today, given terrorism, wars and such:

1. Going, with security procedures in place..per this posting.

2. Going it alone, and taking your chances.

3. Not going, and not seeing worthwhile things.

I would opt for option one. Although Nancy and I did some sightseeing in Vietnam in the early 1960s, on the option two alternative. But we were in the company of knowledegable French residents who knew what was going on.

We went to traipse through Cairo and some other parts of Egypt last year (not on a cruise), and, while we had no security, we felt, for the most part, safe. Out of all my travels, however, it was the trip that made me the most nervous. I know most Egyptians are very friendly, kind people, but I had several uncomfortable encounters, including being grabbed forcefully and pulled toward a store as the shopkeep insisted that I go in and buy a t-shirt. Also, my friend was 'held hostage' on a camel outside the grounds of Gaza when we decided we didn't want to tour the pyramids on 'camelback'. It's basically all about the money. Everyone in the tourist business is looking to scam you, one way or another, out of your cash. If you're low key and simply and forcefully say 'no' once, you should be able to keep most of the vendors and scammers at bay.

I saw many tour groups around the pyramids, mostly Japanese, German, Spanish, and French, and, interestingly, none of them appeared to have body guards or police escorts. Perhaps this is a necessary service for Brits and Americans nowadays.

Tourism is one of Egypt's biggest economic industries and ever since 1997 the authorities have done everything possible to ensure safety of all overseas visitors.

Police escorts are a requirement outside the cities, to all the sites, where coachloads of tourists are headed. They don't want another '97. If you are travelling alone it's your choice to have protection or not, but police will insist on escorting groups.

I have not been to the Pyramids, only Cairo itself, which I enjoyed for the short stay I had. This was before '97 and the airport even then was a barricade, with sand bags surrounding & armed personnel everywhere. They are protecting the visitors and welcoming them.

Well, there has been very recently a severe attack on the Taba Hilton, in the North of the Sinai Desert, very close to the Israeli border.

Many Israelis were there celebrating or holidaying the Jewish New Year in, so it was in october 2004. Many people were killed, and a wing of the hotel collapsed.

Maybe this was the reason security at such high profile monuments as the Pyramids, was tight.

I was in Cairo, Upper Egypt and Nubia in 2001. I never felt a moment unsafe.

We visited the Pyramids, and the Egyptian Museum and a tour of Cairo with a taxi with chauffeur. At the pyramids we walked alone and visited the inside of the Mycerinos pyramid. There were possible guards or police but not really intrusive.

The busses to Abou Simbel from Aswan went in convoy (40 tourist busses in the early moment through the nubian desert !), and every bus had an armed guard.

Excursions made from the (Nile)cruise ship were unescorted apart from the guide, but I seem to remember two armed guards were on board.

Everywhere in the country you could see little houses on a pillar, with an armed soldier in it. It made me not feel safer.

The Nile cruises are also an ideal way of separating the rich western tourist from the poor Egyptian, you hardly see each other, and certainly not in the day-to-day conditions, only on tourist sights. I had the impression the Egyptian government liked it that way.

Cairo, Gizeh and a Nile cruise are anyhow certainly worth the effort !!

I get quite vocal about terrorism!

If we sit at home scarred to go anywhere the terrorist have won. None of us are gifted enough to know where terrorist will strike next, be it in Egypt or your home town.

I’ve said this before if you look at the statsistics, the biggest risks to you life are firstly your diet and secondly you car, terrorists are way down the list!

Mr_Cunard maybe you should ask yourself am I safe driving to work tomorrow?

You are right Malcolm !

However, it must still be a vacation, and in a place where you have constantly to check and so, it is not pleasant, but I guess Egypt is worth it, The pyramids and the monuments, are truly amazing, as is the Sun there.

I know what you mean, but you could conatantly be scared in NY, London or anywhere these days! It is not as simple as "if I go to Egypt I'm in danger but if I go somewhere else, or stay at home, I'm not'.

Life MUST go on.

Next week on friday (5-nov-2004) we are leaving Genua with the LIRICA for a 12-day East-Med-trip. We are also visiting Alexandria and hope to go to the pyramids of Gizeh and Sphinx. I heard that we will go in convoy indeed. When I'am back I 'll tell how it was in Egypt.
Henri.

You might even end up on the same dining table as they seat same Nationality together if possible [if you have asked for a larger than your party table that is].

Have a great time Henri, & I look forward to hearing about your Egypt experience [with lots of photos if possible] on your return.

Well, egyptians authorities are taking big measures to prevent it happen again. The good thing about it, is that the local integrist which commited most attacks in Egypt have a pact of no agression with the goverment and have said no more against terrorists except irsaelis. But they are as trustfull as snakes and evertyhing could happen, also in any place of the world. In NY, in Madrid bombings, in Russia...everywhere. There´s no more risks in Egypt than in other places where Alqaeda has hidden terrorist. Sad, but real. And living is a danger everywhere. In London, in Paris or in Los Angeles. As far as I am concerned, I want to live with dignity, and won´t allow them to rule my life. So, I would go now. I went there long ago and it´s one of the most fascinating countries in the planet. Millions visit Egypt with no risk, I suppose a heart attack or being knocked down by a car is more likely.
