Though the Plaza is not a ship, it is every bit as important landmark, and I am just as sad today to hear that the Plaza, like the Norway/France, is leaving us.
On April 30th, the high-society and legendary hotel is closing its doors for at least a year to become condo's and a mini-mall. Most of the best rooms are being ripped out. To me, this is as bad as tearing it down. It's sad to see that another relic of the golden age, from which all of our beloved oceanliners harked, is dissappearing, too.

I guess this is called "progress".

Click the picture to enter the site. She's not going down without a fight. A big rally was held in front of the hotel a couple weeks ago. I talked to a couple of the hotels workers on the subway on their way home from the rally.

Seriously, don't they have to apply for some sort of planning permission/change of use of the building in New York? What if that wasn't forthcoming?

It's a shame they couldn't bring her back up to standards (if that was the case) or have another company come in and do it (like Four Seasons) and keep her going as a hotel.

quote:Originally posted by lasuvidaboy:Older hotel in many cases need to be updated and in many sometimes completely gutted to compete with more modern properties. They simply do not offer what today's travelers demand and many have much smaller guest rooms. The traditional decor and fixtures can be recreated and modern amenities such as, improved HVAC, dataports, electronics etc. installed. In the Plaza's case, the hotel is architecturally incredible and would make a first rate super luxury condominium complex. The Plaza Hotel will not be torn down and will emerge as a fabulous residential property. It would be great IMO if a few floors remained as an improved luxury boutique hotel.
With the rest ripped out for a shopping mall? You're crazy. Of course, you are a native of L.A., where history is torn down left and right for strip malls and freeways.....
