Ive been watching the webcam over the last week and havent seen many ports of call. I did a search and found this qld news report

quote:
Passengers on board Sapphire Princess have reported the boat is "limping" to Malaysia after a malfunction in an engine turbine between Darwin and Indonesia on Tuesday.

They also said there was no beer and a shortage of some wines

sounds like some customers are not happy... i dont know if its because theyre missing ports or missing out on alcohol.

quote:
P&O Cruises spokesman John Richardson said crew members were having trouble starting one of the gas turbines used to boost the ship's speed from 17 to 22 knots.

"The gas turbines operate separately to the diesel engine, which is fine, and they allow the boat to perform high speeds," he said.

A technician is due to join the boat in Singapore on Tuesday morning, and Mr Richardson said any delayed passengers would be compensated.

i didnt realise the gas turbines were used for better performance- when i was onboard they said they were used to power the ship whilst in ports as its more environmentally friendlier then running the diesel engines.

Thanks Phil,

I have also been watching the cam,and wondered why they were not going to Bali as the brochure had stated.

Perhaps the band will play

From www.thesundaymail.news.com.au

quote:

Sunshine Coast resident Steve Harris received an email from Brisbane-based friends which said the luxury 18-storey vessel was travelling so slowly, a scheduled stop in Bali was cancelled.

He said the couple, who paid $7500 each for the 18-day cruise to Thailand, were angry the stopover was cancelled to make up time.

"My friends on board were supposed to be in Padang Bay (southeast Bali) on Sunday, but the schedule was changed to ensure the boat arrived in the final port of Thailand on time," Mr Harris said.

This port call was changed well before to depart from Sydney on March 7

But he said it was unlikely the 116,000-tonne cruise ship would run out of beer.

"I'm trying to contact the boat to find out about the beer situation . . . it's possible the ship could have run out of certain types of Australian beer. After all, there are 1000 Australian passengers on board," Mr Richardson said.

Perhaps they have only run out of Australian beer.
Would that be Fosters or VB ???????????

yep that would be fosters (the beer 'all aussies love' - well so everyone else thinks!)

one must remember, being an american ship, the aussie beers are considered 'imported beers' and hence have a higher price tag. So the complaining aussies onboard should be taking advantage of having these foreign beers at a cheaper price then they would normally pay at home! (i hope that made sense~!)

She is due to arrive Port Kelang tomorrow.
I just wondered why technichan will not plan to join in Port Kelang? or will she skip to call?
If she suffered serious turbine trouble, they shall dispatch soonest.

I agree with the news article that P&O have had a bad run lately, but I don't agree on Pacific Sky being dubbed "the unluckiest vessel on the water". She's not unlucky she is problem prone and that's it. As for Sapphire Princess this is going to be bad PR, but like always P&O will recover, aren't they the only cruise company in OZ?

Passengers on board Sapphire Princess have reported the boat...

We know passengers may get it wrong and call a cruise ship a boat, but the journalist who wrote this article should know better... it's a (CRUISE) SHIP mate!

quote:

How many passengers complained about the lack of alcohol? Maybe the couple and some other Aussies they befriended? Or was it the majority or all of the Aussies? Does this portray (us) Aussies as 'pissheads'?

And notice they called Sapphire Princess a boat!!

bulbousbow- i thought the same thing about some of your comments!

also i think the report said about 1000 aussies onboard. i hope they enjoy the rest of their cruise! (with or without beverages!!)

also- like any cruise, there is always a condition in the fine print that passengers must remember - it says that the cruise line reserves the right to change the itinerary and/or miss a port of call without giving compensation etc etc

What relevance has this question to do with the following statement I made on Pacific Sky and Sapphire Princess?

I haven't checked about Bali call or her troubles. If I find some information I'll post it, if not someone else will.

Phil quoted from the article Limping liner latest in P&O's horror run that Sapphire Princess will be boarded by a technician while in Singapore, hopefully we'll know more then.

Indonesia is Travel Warning area for American tourists.

quote:

The Department urges Americans who choose to travel to Indonesia despite this Travel Warning to observe vigilant personal security precautions; to remain aware of the continued potential for terrorist attacks against Americans, U.S. or other Western interests in Indonesia; and to register with U.S. Embassy Jakarta, U.S. Consulate General Surabaya or the U.S. Consular Agent in Bali. Registration facilitates the U.S. Mission's contact with Americans in emergency situations. Americans in Indonesia should maintain a low profile, vary daily routines, avoid crowds and demonstrations, and keep abreast of local news and developments that may affect the security situation.

The Department reminds Americans that the terrorist threat in Indonesia continues. Reports indicate that terrorists are planning attacks against a wide variety of targets. These attacks could occur at any time and could be directed against any location, including those frequented by foreigners and identifiably American or other western facilities or businesses in Indonesia. The potential remains for violence and terrorist actions against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the country. The Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist group has cells in several Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, and connections with al-Qaeda. A terrorist bombing outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on September 9, 2004, killed eleven and injured more than 180 people. An August 2003 terrorist bombing at a major international hotel in Jakarta injured several American citizens, and seven Americans died in a terrorist attack in Denspasar, Bali in October 2002. The U.S. government continues to receive information that JI and other extremist groups might be planning additional attacks against U.S. and other Western interests in Indonesia.
