Rob,

Isn't it about this time when you get ready for your training cruises? Have you been assigned a ship yet?

(Hope I haven't missed any posts telling about this already!)

Regards,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Indeed it is about time, thanks for asking! I am assigned to the MS Rotterdam, and will start my onboard period at July 14 out of the city of Rotterdam. Starting with a series of N-Europe cruises, after that we'll do several Mediterranean cruises, a Trans-Atlantic from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro and S-America/Antarctic cruises. I will propably disembark December 17 or January 11 2006. I'm looking very forward to it!

Kind regards,

Rob

Rob - you will love the Rotterdam. I was last on her in May 2004 - she's a beautiful ship and a great crew. Will you be working on the Bridge? Last time I was on the ship there were some young cadets on board in their first year of training.

My friend's husband, who will be Hotel Manager, and she will be joining the ship June 8th for almost 3 months, so I'm sure you will meet them.

Fred Everson is a great Captain - he will no doubt be there but I don't know who he switches with - the Captains are on for 3 months and off for 3 so you will get both.

This is going to be a wonderful experience for you.

Happy sailing.

Diane

Thanks for the very kind replies! As a cadet you have both nautical as technical tasks onboard. In The Netherlands, there is no study just for officer or engineer- it is combined. In the last year at school you specialize in one of both, but after that it is still possible to sail in both functions. P&O Nedlloyd for example sails with this system, called Marof (Maritime Officer).

Sympatico, how great you have these contacts, for sure I will meet them onboard. Indeed it will be a wonderful (learning) experience, working for Holland America was the main reason to choose this study. After 2 years at school I can't wait to start sailing!

Kind regards,

Rob

Rob,

could you describe the curriculum of your study? Also recommendations of good books covering the involved topics would be appreciated. And, as posted above, we all want a detailed diary of your time aboard the Rotterdam.
Thank You!
Greetings

Congradulations Rob, I will be just starting Maritime School this summer in Norther California. My first training cruise is in one year going to Alaska, Central America, and South America. In the U.S. you have to choose between deck officer or engineer we don't really have a choice. So I chose deck. Good luck.

Hi all,

Unfortunately I will board MS Rotterdam later. I wish I was sailing already but the starting date was too early for us due to school. We (my friend who will sail the same ship as well) now will have to start later with our onboard period.

As you'll can imagine it was a huge dissapointment.
I will keep you informed.

Kind regards
Rob

Hi Kit,

I was there from 0600-0900, I saw the +500 Zeekadetten standing in line to board the ship so I assume that the ceremony was on the MS Rotterdam. Did you make any photo's of the departure?

See you onboard! Watch the name tags from persons with very few golden stripes

Hi Rob,

Have lots of fun on the Rotterdam and don’t forget you need to learn as well!
I have send you a PM with my mobile phone number, I will be in Rotterdam on the 7th of august so if you have to meet that day you can give me a call, I will probably be hanging around the Wilhelminakade somewhere that day.

Hi everybody! A small message from onboard ms Rotterdam. I am on the ship since Sunday, and currently we are cruising to Tallinn, Estonia. What a great ship!! The last few days have been very busy, but so interesting! I have started in the Engine Department for the next 6 weeks, and after that I will switch over to the Nautical Department. Crew internet isn't that expensive so -if I got the time, I will post more frequently!

All the best,

Rob
