I remeber that I also heard that somewhen. Weren`t there books released?
I’m a Star Wars fan and collector since my childhood (yes I still have the old toys) For 20+ years now all sorts of spin off books have been written before, long before, in the middle, after and long after the first trilogy of 20+ years ago. But those have been written (or like comics drawn) by authors not associated with the Lucas Film company.
Lucas first made movies episode 4 (starwars a new hope in 1977) 5 (the empire strike back in 1980) and 6 (return of the jedi in 1983) he clearly named the first trilogy movies episode 4, 5, and 6 (as seen in the opening titles of those movies) and thus showed, even back then, his intend to make another trilogy for episodes 1, 2 and 3 someday.
During these 20+ years Lucas never announced he would ever make a third trilogy (okay Lucas sees himself as a big artist and artists tend to get new ideas every now and then, so don’t be surprised if eventually there pups up a third trilogy artwork)
In 1997 Lucas restored the first old trilogy and added new computer effects that he has been experimenting with, and that he wanted to further explore for the then upcoming trilogy of episode 1 (the phantom menace in 1999) 2 (attack of the clones in 2002) and 3 (revenge of the sith in 2005) which today has been completed.

Sorry Onno, but Lucas did announce that he was hoping to make NINE Star Wars movies at the time the first movie was released in 1977. The phrase "Trilogy of trilogies" was coined by him in his explanation in television interviews of why the first movie was Episode IV. The planned sequence was Episodes IV, V, VI, followed by I, II, III, followed by VII, VIII and IX. Since I have seen no mention of the third trilogy since the release of "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi", it appears that Episodes VII, VIII and IX will not be made.
BTW, the subtitle "A New Hope" did not appear in the initial release of Episode IV but was added much later.

Remember the Star Wars holiday special made for TV broadcast? I have never seen it myself but apparently it was a very bad piece with special effects scenes literally cut and copied from the first Star Wars movie. Lucasfilm practically denies it’s existence and the holiday special was never realised on tape let alone DVD. (and probably never will be) Just like the old versions (without the special editions of 1997) will never be released as made on DVD. A real pity because I grew up with the original versions and still think they are better then the later released special edition, anyway I still have them on tape.
Are you sure the original movie never got the title a new hope? I know that the original movie has always been promoted as Star Wars on all merchandise, book, records and video covers and for me the first movie of 77 will always be plain Star Wars. But as long as I can remember the movie (not the tempered one from 1997) when the yellow text starts rolling on the screen has always had the subtitle episode IV a new hope. when do you think the subtitle “a new hope” was edited into the movie?

For myself, I think good riddance. The first two movies (Episodes IV and V) showed considerable promise of coherent myth, based on classical themes, which would be strong enough to run through nine movies. By the time the Ewoks appeared in Episode VI, it was clear that the merchandising impulse had taken over.
I can't exactly remember when "A New Hope" was first added to the title of Episode IV, but ISTR that it was about the time of Episode VI's release.
There is still one opportunity for a great Star Wars endeavour. A considerable number of books have been written, all under Lucasfilm authority although of wildly varying quality, about other events in the universe in which the movies are set. There is still space for an official history of that universe, of academic quality, which could tie all the events together in a logical and analytical fashion. However, as interesting as that would be, I suspect that it would be far too dry ever to have enough popular appeal to make money - and hence will never be written. Pity.
Apparently the “episode IV a new hope” line was not allowed 1977 by twentieth century fox because they thought it would be confusing to the audience.
