Did anyone else catch the 2 hour programme on TLC tonight about the refurbishment of Sovereign? If not it's repeated at 9pm PDT tonight.

Very interesting - and also some great (but VERY brief) shots of Eugenio C in Freeport as the ship pulls in for drydock.

Enjoy!

PS It sounds like at least a two-parter w/ the next episodes showing NEXT Sunday...

It was excellent! One of the best "cruise ship" shows I have ever watched. I can't wait for the next part in the series.

I also loved Royal Caribbean's production of the making of VOYAGER OF THE SEAS. Royal Caribbean seems very cooperative when it comes to making these videos.

I wonder if TLC is filming a documentary on the stretching of ENCHANTMENT as we speak. That would be truly interesting to watch.

Its on 8 opm sunday on TLC "Rebirth of a cruise ship" Fabulous shots under the ship the Captain seemed to cry saying "she dosn't belong here out of water". Claimed to have lived on her for 12 years has he been the Captain since she first sailed I guess. I like the supense on whether the clock will be fixed or have to go. And who knew that the Sheild and Anchor had not worked"lit up" in five years? And couldn't they give them an extra day or two as to not cause the unsafe practices? Two fires in one day? Lucky she is still around.

This was an excellent program--apparently it's a 5-part series, with the first 2 episodes last night, and the remaining 3 episdodes will be shown next Sunday, June 12th.

"Dry-Dock: Rebirth of a Cruise Ship." You can also read about it on The Learning Channel's website at www.tlc.com

Seems like everyone liked the TLC show so much that I'm reluctant to say I thought it was slow, slow, slow. Not to mention the low-rate "music video" type editing (2 second shots edited together at lightning speed). I must say TLC certainly sold their share of commercial time in those two hours!!

I was fortunate enough to have been on Sovereign when she left the yard in France, across the Atlantic, and then for another year as Sr. Asst. Purser (we were called Purser's way back then!). Apparently it makes for good storytelling, but to my recollection, the famous centrum clock worked (almost) the entire time I was aboard. Go figure. I remember the builder/designer coming aboard a couple of times to 'fine tune' it.

I guess my real caveat to the TLC program was the fact that is WAS a TLC program and not terribly informative. I'm sure we've all seen carpet being removed and furniture being moved (in our own homes?), but how about the rip-out of the cinemas? And where did all the banquets go on the main floor of Follies? And last but not least, who is the little weasel playing the role of Asst. Project Manager? Did they find him at central casting?

Anyway...........in my opinion(!), this show would be best recorded, edited for commercials and content and presented in about an hours time! And yes, Eugenio C. in the background is terrific!

Who would have thought that (with Norway's fate sealed) Sovereign would be the old grand dame of the Caribbean - at 17 years old!

Cheers!

This was very interesting last night. It gives you an excellent glimpse of what kind of work really goes into a refurbishment. Very complicated. My only complaint was that they sort of blew the first half hour with the last cruise before her actual refurbishment. My wife was sitting there saying, I thought this was supposed to be about the ship being redone. Why are they giving us a travellog?" So I had to explain to her that they had to show how they managed to get all their people in place, as it was a project that needed to be completed in three weeks.

The Sovereign is a beautiful ship. I should give her a try sometime.

Unfortunately, the cruise lines refuse to pay the exorbitant American union wages, hence you get this as a result. And the thing I found to be of major concern was the frequency of fire outbreaks. Does anyone know if this is typical?

I saw the show last night and it seemed like a waste to me to throw all that furniture away like that.
I would also be mad that I paid a lot of money and they were carrying out refurbishment during the cruise.
How many times has the Sovereign of the Seas been refurbished during her career from 1988 to the present. She is a beauty as cruise ships go today.

I'm sorry I do not have TLC- I wonder if the show will be available on DVD?

I think Sovereign of the Seas is one of the most significant ships ever built. First, she introduced the multi-deck atrium that is now a standard design element to nearly every cruise ship. It represented a monumental shift in cruise ship design- allowing ship architecture to be more influenced by land based hotel design... a trend that continues today.

Secondly, at the time of her launch she was the largest passenger ship aloat... not very significant compared to QM2 and Freedom of the Seas today, but this is very important- Sovereign was the first purpose built cruise ship to suprass the surviving Atlantic liners in size (France/Norway and QE2).

I believe this represented the beginning of a new golden age of passenger ships. Until this point cruise ships always lived in the shadow of their liner ancestors. Sovereign proved that cruise ships could be as large, and larger, than the famous liners of the past. The glory of passenger ships had recovered from the damage done by jets travel decades earlier.

Apart from these two significant things- Sovereign is simply a beatuful looking ship. A true classic.

How long did Sovereign of the Seas hold the title of largest ship? Who replaced her as the largest?

Thanks, CMan

Sovereign debuted in 1988 at 73 192 tonnage and I believe she held that record until her ALMOST sister ship, Monarch, deubted in 1991 at 73 941 grt (Monarch's sister Majesty debuted in 1992 w/ the same tonnage.

So, unless another line brought out something larger within that time period (I can't recall) - she would have held it for almost 4 years.

If I am missing ships from elsewhere - please fill in the blanks

In the fall of 1990, the Norway was refurbished with the two upper decks which pushed her to over 76,000gt, reclaiming the title of largest passenger ship until the Sun Princess came out in 1995. Neither of Sovereign's near sister ever had the mantle of largest passenger ship.

A very interesting part that was a surprise to me was that the lights on her Crown and Anchor hadn't been working for quite some time and the only way to fix it was to remove it off the ship and have it repaired, they sure had a hard time getting it off as it had been on their for 17 years. That was an interesting sight to see it removed by crane and lowered onto the truck!

What was shocking is that someone on this chat page would find this boring? They need the commercials to pay the crew who shot this and for TLC to maybe get a big viewership and shoot another ship story. I believe that it was shot to look like a realality show which are very popular these days. Knowing you worked on a ship for may years please bear with us landlubbers that are getting a kick out of it. And by the way how many times did you see the rutters and Porps while you were on board? Sorry you fell asleep. As for the clock I believe that they are going for a surprise finish with the clocking finally coming to life again, who cares if they fibed about how long it was broke I like the show.

I groaned with contempt during the dock scenes where the young manager is huffing at the slow dock workers. They are on the clock, he is on salary. Narrator kept talking how industrious and hard working the Philippeno (spell?) workers are, sort of like how African porters are carrying the great white hunters bathtub and mini bar through the jungle. Very condescending.

Yes it is a great show. As far as the furniture is concerned why not give it to Habitat for Humanity or a similiar group.
My best friend is a retired commander in the navy and has helped on quite a few upgrades on navy ships and he told me that fires were a daily affair
when the welders were onboard.

Yeah I am surprised that they don't give it to charity or anything like that, maybe collectors. I am sure there is a good tax write-off if they gave it to charity. And we all know how much cruise lines like to save money.

What a great little series! I mean, that tension that's in the air is so thick you can cut it with a knife! My stomach was in knots feeling what they are feeling. What time constraints!!! If they don't get that cruise ship back in service by the time given to them, can you imagine how much money they would lose!?!? 100's of thousands of dollars, thousands of passengers shuffled around. What a mess that would be.!

Also, the captain seems such a genuine man. I coudln't help but get involved with what he was saying when Soveriegn was up on blocks, he was almost very upset seeing his baby like that. He wants so badly to bring her back into the ocean where's she's most happy.

I don't know how our European freinds can catch this.. maybe satelite TV. I can't wait till Sunday.

I concur. She is indeed really a very pretty ship. She is of the Soverign class. Which includes her sisters, Monarch of the Seas, and Majesty of the Seas. I'd love to one day sail on any of them.

I sailed on Sovereign's second ever cruise and I still remember walking into the atrium and being absolutely blown away - I had never seen anything like it. I loved the restaurants, the Schooner Bar, the Champagne Bar, the staggering Viking Crown and the fabulously expansive promenade deck. I agree that she completely recast the whole mould and style of cruise ships and since her advent there has been no going back - in fact its only her lack of balconies that now seems a bit silly. But she is a lovely, glorious ship.
