bmajor, thanks for this info. I did some checking up to see whether QE2 on the 2007 world tour visited Adelaide. Our port ship schedule has no entries for QE2, however Melbourne does for February 19. Maybe they haven't updated as yet. I hope.

Since QM2 is visiting New Zealand and then Australia in February 2007 they'll have to cross paths somwhere, and I wonder where.

Jeff, that sounds logical to me. We'll have to wait and see the Sydney Cruise Schedule for confirmation.

looks like your speculation was right!

Feb 20, 2007 looks like the date that QE2 & QM2 will be in Sydney together!

I think a weekend trip to Sydney will be in order! i'll have to save up some frequent flyer points!

from seatrader

'The 345mtr long Queen Mary 2 has been given permission to dock at the RAN fleet base at Garden Island on her maiden visit to Sydney.'

Cunard is expected to release itineraries for the two world cruises shortly.

You are lucky. It's great when they're both in together. I've been down twice when they have been here and am going next year too. Anyone going to Sydney that day get plenty of pics just in case it's the only time.

Hi Jeff, your guess was not just right about QE2 and QM2 meeting in Sydney, but also your prediction about QM2 doing a world cruise and visiting Australia. Good onya mate. Really hope that QM2 includes Australia's southern ports on her way to SE Asia.

Click www.airviewonline.com.au

You can view aerial photo of Garden Island and Woolloomooloo(at the foot of Garden Island) in the back.

P.S. I have a book that photo shown the Oriana unusually berthed at Woolloomooloo when the Canberra, in the far distance, just departed Circular Quay.

No, she has been withdrawn. PACIFIC PRINCESS will be back to Australia to do her cruises and more.

See this thread: Dawn Princess pulled away from Australia.

Actually Phil I have been getting a bad feeling about this, and what you have said could turn out to be true. My reasoning is based on how sister company P&O schedules its Australian world cruise visits. When Aurora and Oriana come down under, Perth and Adelaide only get to see one of the two during a summer season. Since QE2 is visiting us, logic would say that QM2 will not. Could I be correct?

Both our cities have very big British immigrant populations. When QE2 visits Adelaide (and I assume the same happens in Perth) she attracts big crowds. It would be very sad and bad marketing if QM2 did not visit Australia’s southern ports: Hobart, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth (Fremantle) where they could easily pick-up many new customers. Besides me being biased and for a good reason, from a marketing perspective why should QM2 go north from Sydney?

Could the Ports of Adelaide and Freo accomodate QM2?
I'm still scratching my head as to where they will berth her in Auckland?

Fremantle could not. The QE2 can barely make the turn into Fremantle (about 1,000 feet wide). Fremantle port is inside the mouth of the Swan River, so it has restrictions.

QM2 could anchor and use a tender service. The US. Carriers anchor off Fremantle.

Chris, there is an image in the Fremantle Ports gallery that shows USS Constellation turning in Fremantle’s Inner Harbour.

The US Navy’s aircraft carrier USS Constellation is 324 metres long. QM2 is 345 metres long. It may be possible for QM2 to swing unaided by tugs. In my opinion this can only happen if there are no containers ships berthed opposite the Passenger Terminal and also if the weather allows it. QM2 just swung in the Elbe River in Hamburg where she didn’t have much room to turn (see this thread: QM2 is now in Hamburg and in particular marco g’s post).

The Elbe is much wider than Fremantle port especially between Strandkai and Afrikahoft.

Ocean Liners, did you read what marco g said in his post? He said it was 355 metres wide where QM2 turned around. Is he wrong?

As for Adelaide, the swinging basin opposite the Overseas Passenger Terminal is 288 metres and not wide enough as it is not dredged right up to the breakwater. Panamax size ships such as QE2 can turn with special permission, as she has done in the past, however QM2, should Cunard decide to bring her to Adelaide, can swing around at the container terminal by travelling a short distance further up the channel to the basin there which has a diameter of 460 metres. So, it is possible for QM2 to make a visit here.

The container terminal berths 6 and 7, and in the distance berths 1, 2 (Overseas Passenger Terminal), 3 and 4.
