Early this morning I said my fond farewells to Carnival Liberty in Civitavecchia after a 3-night pre-inaugural cruise that started at the Fincantieri yard in Monfalcone on Saturday.

I was quite taken with Carnival Liberty, despite her sometimes shocking interior design. After a couple of days I actually grew accustomed to the zany décor and I must say service, food and entertainment were all very good during my short cruise.

A 18-page preview with randomly chosen interior photos is now online at Ship Parade for those of you interested. You might need to refresh the page to see the latest version.

During my time on board Carnival Liberty, I briefly talked to Joe Farcus, Carnival's interior designer and asked him which room is his favorite. He mentioned the Hot & Cool Disco... See if you agree with him!

A full Cruise Review will of course be featured at a later date, including many, many more photos, dinner menus and a sample daily program.

Looking at these pictures I have to say that I prefer this bold overdecoration with it`s entertaining aspect to the "want to be..." interior of some "...but can not" ships. It`s not meant to be taken seriously, it`s not a ship for a world cruise, and I liked the photo with the slope of Stromboli - well done as usually.

Hope you had a good time Bart , thanks for the photos .
well , in generall it looks not so bad (it is Carnival after all) . one think strange is the use of acres of grey and black marble floor which is completly out of fashion and makes your eyes tired

Totally overdone as normal. However Carnival's cabins always look tasteful and the main dining rooms are pretty, but everything else is just far too lould and confused.

Nice images Bart.

Pam - even a free cruise wouldn't entice me.

Nice photos, Bart.

Thanks Bart. I must say that the photos make the ship look much better than the ones that I saw posted on Webshots.

Bart, I'm glad you posted this, because in normal lighting, as you have captured these shots, certain areas of the ship aren't quite as outrageous as they had appeared in another group of photos I had seen. That being said, I still think it's a little too much for my liking. But great job, as usual.

Thanks Bart for the pictures. I really liked it, and some rooms wasn't as bad as I thought. The tatoo disco lounge was too much!

But this room is probably the best I have seen so far on LIBERTY:

But don't you find it dark & dismal Wayne? I cannot get myself into an enjoyable mood when everything is so dark and nasty to boot. Where's the bright [I mean in the sense of light, not gaudy reds etc] colours, light [sunlight] and fun? There isn't any at all, horrible.

Well yes, it is a bit dark and gloomy, but as far as the decor and finishing, its not overdone and exotic like with most of the public rooms.

Ah, lovely, a floating celebration of all that is gaudy...and I'm going to be spending twelve days on it. I'm sure it won't be a bad trip anyway, but I would much prefer something more conservative and tasteful like MSC perhaps? Even some completely dull and forgettable would be less disappointing than this. But I digress- at least it's not as hideously ugly as the Carnival Legend....that one's a real winner.

Looks as if there is a huge amount of simulated stone work...rock ceiling beams. (seen near the casino and in the main lobby atrium. Also the Flowers Lobby ceiling looks like fireworks.

That's actually the cigar bar that is located between the two dining rooms on deck four. IMHO this is the best looking room on all of the Destiny/Conquest class ships.

Looking at LIBERTY, it appears that Farcus has run out of original ideas. I'm seeing several design "themes" that have been used on previous Carnival ships.

Bart's pictures are superb as always, but in the case of LIBERTY I think Bart's photographic talent can only do so much.

I'm not a fan of the Conquest Class ships to begin with, but if I had to pick one it would be COSTA FORTUNA.

Guys, remind me: Is Liberty based on the Destiny design?

Did they not add extra decks and extra cabins to the original Destiny design? How much did the gross tonnage increse? How many more passengers? Was the internal layout changed?

The Destiny was the first ship and weighed in around 100,000 tons. Carnival then added an extra deck of cabins on the Triumph and Victory bringing them in a little heavier.

The Conquest class is a design of the Destiny/Triumph class but was lengthened by a little over fifty feet and more cabins were added once again. The Liberty is a Conquest class ship and weighs in at 110,000 tons. It is the basic layout of the Destiny/Triumph class with a few minor changes but IMHO the Conquest class has a much more crowded feeling due to the extra passengers. Carnival did not add much space to the public areas on the Conquest class. She also has one of the worst designs of any ship that I have cruised. Very chopped up and does not flow well at all. Give me a Spirit class ship anyday.

Gordon

Thanks for the information, Gordon.

Considering that Carnival is the number one cruise line, it is surprising that criticism of the design and decor of their ships is so very common place.

Someone must like them or they would not be number one?

I can't comment on the space ratio, but I do not understand in the least why so many people are in love with the Spirit class. Their hallways have annoying corners, the pool area (particularly the pool itself) is too narrow, as is the buffet when near capacity. The space ratio may be an improvement over some Carnival ships, but other than that they are worth more as scrap metal than they are as ships to me. They should be recycled and turned into something with a design that isn't half-assed, but that won't be happening anytime soon.

Some ideas:
a) the people who read Cruise Talk and like Carnival interiors are afraid to speak up.
b) the people who keep Carnival at #1 don't place a high value on the decor
c) The people in (b) do like the decor but don't post here.

Anyway, there's another darn TV screen by the pool! I know Caribbean Princess was first to offer this distraction... are a bunch of other ships now getting them too? boo hiss.

Ship Parade is the best!! That said, Carnival Liberty's interior decor is classic Farcus. I just cannot imaging spending a week on that ship-there is something garish at every turn. She still will be a huge success w/the Carnival faithful.
