Norwegian Dream update
August 18, 2005

Norwegian Dream is proceeding with its revised Alaska itineraries from Seattle as the company hopes to fix an engine problem while en route. The glitch has slowed the ship for a number of cruises, with customers notified in advance of the need to drop Sitka from the port lineup in order to keep the schedule.

The on-going problem, which is affecting one engine, was caused when a connecting rod came out of the side of the engine block, NCL spokeswoman Susan Robison told Seatrade Insider. This caused the crankshaft to bend and damaged a camshaft. 'We are awaiting repair on the camshaft,' Robison said.

'We are trying to fix the problem as we go,' she added. 'If we can't then we will have to go to drydock but it looks good that we will be able to fix as we go.'

Seatrade Insider earlier reported that the problem had been fixed and erroneously said Sitka was back on the schedule. Actually, it was a separate glitch that cropped up on the last cruise that was repaired. That glitch and other factors, including a tour bus breakdown in Prince Rupert, had caused Norwegian Dream to arrive late back into Seattle last week, necessitating the need to drop Ketchikan on the current sailing.

Customers on that cruise had been given the option to cancel penalty-free; those who sailed are receiving a $300 per cabin shipboard credit.

Hi,
Thanks for the info.
I felt there was something wrong when she arrived
Seattle 4 1/2 hours late last week and left even
with more delays.
Her Hubbard Glacier '' in 'n' out '' maoeuvres were
also noticeably shorter during the current sailing.
She is due to dock in PrinceRupert tomorrow 20th Aug....according to local people, she's expected '' a bit late''....NCL might not have a choice but to scrub an entire cycle and drydock her somewhere.
Hopefully, the facilities in Portland can accomodate....She's due Seattle 0700 Monday 22nd....
Cheers

That would be great to see the NORWEGIAN DREAM in Portland! Unfortunately, I doubt Cascade General's shipyard cannot accomodate a ship the size of N. DREAM since the departure of Dry Dock 4.

Norwegian Dream has had the excuse of engine problems for three years now. I was on her last May and we dropped Tallin and shuffled the rest of the cruise because one engine was not working. NCL seem to be using this as an excuse instead of doing the required repairs.

She is still a nice ship, but somehow she aged very quickly.

Mec1 if you look carefully, I did not say I thought so, I said 'many'. I've not been on her so really I cannot comment.

However, most of the Ocean Liner Society seem to share that opinion. I ran a visit to her a few years ago. I had 40 places, sent out 200 letters and got 5 applicants. It was a free visit and even included lunch. (Just about all other ship visits are oversubscribed).

I understand that she may leave the NCL fleet in the near future along with 'Wind'? maybe NCL share this opinion that she is now outdated, also?

Hi,
" Dream '' is being re-deployed in Europe for '06....Obviously, her '' retirement'' is premature, and
there appears to be no plans from StarCruise to ''rapatriate '' her to lesser duties.
But, she , without a doubt, needs a solid dose of drydock remediation, and I suspect that's in the vards before she goes transat.
Strangely, the local NCL folks were not in the know as to the time and wherabouts of that drydock.
To replace '' Dream "" in the WestCoast for '06 Alaska sailings, NCL is deploying her sisteer, '' Wind'' and basing her in Vancouver where her lower
mechanical capacity does not interfere with a 7 days inside passage sailing summer. ''Star" currently doing this, will replicate, but out of Seattle, given her higher engine range.
Cheers
