Add yet another cruise line to the growing list implementing MUTS (movies under the stars). First we had Princess, then came Carnival, next was Disney .... and announced today is Costa! When will it end?????

Seatrade Insider announced today that COSTA CONCORDIA, under construction in Italy, will feature a giant video screen over one of it's pools.

Soon it will be difficult to find a ship without this annoying feature.

It was inevitable. The question I ask myself is why always over the pool? Isn't there somewhere else on deck for such a thing?

Wow, Carnival is really "innovative"...

When will it be HAL's and P&O's turn?

My guess is QM2 will be next. She needs to compete with Royal Caribbean during all those 7-day Caribbean cruises she is scheduled for.

QM2 already has it. Its projected from that upper deck cafe onto the white block at the base of the funnel, in the daily programme and everything. So I guess that makes it 5 brands!

Just curious for those bashing MUTS. . have you sailed aboard a ship with it? I have and really, it's just another entertainment option. I am not a big movie buff soI didn't use it, same way some people don't go to the shows or casino. It wasn't intrusive at all.

In fact watching the Incrediables under the stars was actually a lot of fun. Don't knock it til you've tried it.

Open air movie performances are an excellent (not new) idea. I also would not have a problem with more things happening outside - but only as long as it is not disturbing others - including me, if I do not want to watch the movie - Having a program on these monitors all the time sound like something I would not like.

Ah, but QM2's is quite different. It's just a movie projector and screen in a very out of the way location. It's not a 24/7 giant video screen that is playing videos and crap day and night.

My problem with MUTS is that (on some ships) it's in the main pool area with few areas to escape it. SEA PRINCESS comes to mind. What happened to sitting by the pool, reading a book, and listening to live music? My other problem is that eventually it's going to be used as a revenue producer (in fact it has to some extent already) showing advertisements and promoting onboard services.

I had no problem with the original conception ... Movies Under the Stars. In fact I think it's cool to sit up on deck *at night* and watch a movie. My problem is that MUTS has expanded to much more than that, playing all day long and in the case of Carnival ... used for interactive play station type games. I'll pass.

Ernie - who likes cruises for live entertainment ... not canned music and videos. I can get that at home.

I agree with sunviking82, try something before bitching about it. I think most cruisers who have expeienced MUTS have enjoyed it. Myself included. People want new things on ships and then complain when there are.

What is there to try? It's an outdoor movie screen. I think most of us already know what MUTS is all about without having to try it. I can see giant outdoor video screens at any large stadium, and of course there is the local movie theater.

It's not like MUTS is something that most people have never tried ... like rock climbing, in-line skating, or a surf pool. I can understand not knocking those features until seen in person ... but a movie screen is a little different. Most people have experienced movie theaters and know what they are about. Just because it's on a ship doesn't somehow make it 'unique'.

Ernie, at most any park or boardwalk you will see people rollerblading. And most water parks have wave pools. And most carnivals have a rock wall to climb. While there are large screens at stadiums, its a little different watching a good movie or concert while on a ship with the Caribbean waters around you. All these things can be found elsewhere, but on a ship they are unique. You mentioned how much to your suprise you liked P.O.A. Maybe it would be the same with MUTS.

The position of the screens on Carribean Princess is perfect, if you don't want to watch or hear you go to one of the other 3 pools on board. . no problem. The sound system is designed just for that specific area, similar to the Disney ships system.

I am not thrilled with the location on the Sea Princess either, but it really is a nice feature and adds something to the vacation experience.

You live in S. Jersey so yes, you have access to water parks and such. Most people don't. My point is that surf pools, rock climbing walls, and even ice skating are not mainstream activities that a majority of people have had access to (or even tried). Most everyone in the US has seen a movie. So it's on a ship by a pool ... big deal.

Had lines stuck with the original plan which was showing movies at night under the stars (like QM2 does) ... I would have been fine with it. As it is, it's become much more than that, and I can assure you it hasn't reached it's full revenue producing potential yet.

Speaking of COSTA CONCORDIA, does anyone have any renderings of what she'll look like. Shes supposed to be a larger(by only 1000grt) conquest class vessel.

The midship pool is glass covered, which gives her the extra gt. Do a searh on Cruise Talk and you will find a model of the ship.
