Not at all Malcolm. A general rule of thumb (not so true anymore) has been that the more upscale lines use Port Everglades, and the more mass-market 7-day Caribbean lines use Miami. In general, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and NCL all use Miami extensively (and Ft. Lauderdale to a smaller extent). Many were surprised when Cunard, Celebrity, and Oceania also started using Miami. In the case of Cunard and Celebrity, they have switched back to Port Everglades for the most part.
Princess, Celebrity, Cunard, Costa, and Holland America are the big power houses at Port Everglades. In addition, there is MSC, Seabourn, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival that use it seasonally or on occasion. There are some others too.
I can't remember if Port Everglades has surpassed Miami in passengers embarked. If not, it is getting close.

I think it's possible that PE handles more pax. than Miami, due to the day cruises on SeaEscape and Discovery, plus the 2-nighters on REGAL EMPRESS.

Are the Port Everglades cruise terminals themselves any more upscale?

I would say not--the terminals at both ports have been rebuilt and renovated over the years, but even if you're sailing on something like SilverSea, it's still from one of the plain boarding lounges like you see everywhere these days.

I agree. Actually, the nicest terminals are the Royal Caribbean terminals in Miami. They are state of the art and even have baggage carousels (airport style) for collecting luggage after the cruise.
Carnival will also have two new state of the art terminals in Miami very shortly, while the old Carnival terminals will go to NCL.
In Ft. Lauderdale, all the terminals look and feel somewhat like converted warehouses (some are). They are fine, but I wouldn't call them "upscale".
I drove by the Coral on the way to work, she is not at the Carnival piers, she's at the pier in between Carnival and RCI's.....next to the future Carnival piers....nice to see Coral again....she's a beautiful ship, one of those that you have to sail on in order to fully appreciate her beauty....
Port Everglades opened today...and will be taking cruise ships starting tomorrow....first prioritiy is to get the gas tankers offloaded so we can have some gas in SFLA.....that's the worst part after Wilma, no gas!!!!

Actually, CORAL is at the Carnival piers .... although not docked right in front of them. There is actually a very long gangway that runs from the Carnival pier alongside the cargo building and then onto the ship. This is so Carnival can have two large ships dock simultaneously. On turnaround days, you will see CARNIVAL VALOR docked where CORAL is, then the TRIUMPH docked just forward of her.
