I wonder if Mona Lisa can sail after 2010 with the right upgrades for SOLAS! She is a very good ship with NO past problems and is Diesel. Is it possible for her to sail past 2010??

Galaxy & gpcruisedude,

I agree that it's wonderful that unless something unforeseeable happens, the "Mona Lisa" will continue to sail until September, 2010.

However, she will not be able to sail beyond that date (remember SOLAS 2010 comes into effect in October, 2010) due to the massive use of wood in her interiors. I have spoken to the owner of Holiday Kreuzfahrten and he would love to keep her beyond that date but it would be extremely costly and her beautiful interiors would have to be destroyed completely, so he sadly don't think it will be a viable option. Holiday might be looking for an exception from the SOLAS 2010 regulations, but I'm very skeptical that such an exception would be permitted.

So, let us enjoy her as long as she continues to operate, and hopefully she will return to Sweden as a museum / hotel ship following the end of her active duties.

Best,

Raoul

I sailed on the Mona when she was with P&O as the Victoria. Her beautiful wooden panneling in the older cabins and restaurant was really fantastic. She did lack the facilities of the modern P&O ships, her casino was a joke. However for British charm and traditional crusing she was fantastic. When boarding her you knew you were boarding something special, a ship small enough for every member of staff to know your name.

in a swedish forum www.landgangen.se it has been talks about trying to aproach the people that was behind the idea to bring Gripsholm back to Stockholm in 2001. Unforunatly nothing has happend in this case as far as i know. I think that someone has to start this by setting up an organisation or something like that. Even if it is some years to 2010 things like this move slowly in sweden.. that was the problem with Gripsholm.. they made the plans to bring her back public to late..

thundergod,

I fully agree with you that any parties who would like to return "Mona Lisa" to Sweden after her active days should start planning as soon as possible. Five years are over all too quickly, and IMHO this is one of the ships which must not be lost!

Best,

Raoul

Can someone extimate how much it would cost to restore her exterior look to the Kungsholm days..? The most important parts would be the second funnel and removing the extra cabins on the upper aft i think?

I don’t know about the costs but restoring her back to Kungsholm would not be a mayor problem technically seen. Most of the alterations are additions instead of replacements. Additions can always be taken away. The aft funnel could be shortened again to its original height and the dummy funnel (which in fact still exist for 50% as a white stub) could be re build. For Queen Mary in Long Beach they fabricated 3 entirely new dummy funnels to replace the old ones. Restoring the dummy funnel could not be a monumental task. The continuation of the row of window below the boat deck also needs to be restored.

It there is someone willing to start up a “Save the Kungsholm” organization I suggest to start right away. It takes much time and effort to generate interest and then to find the right people willing to invest in her and willing to keep investing in her for some time. Cruise companies can be quick when they decide to get rid of a ship (especially when sending to Alang) for them a ship is just “frozen” money that is released once the ship is sold. The luxury of time like in Big U’s case won’t happen again (and still BIG U’s future is vague after all those years being laid up)

I do hope some organization can bring back the Kungsholm to Sweden, just like Rotterdam V she is a ship that does not need a special taste to be liked by the public nor does the ship clash with a skyline of a city (it rather is enhances any sky line) Kungsholm has the ambiance to become a nice “land” based resort serving a Swedish style. Kungsholm also has the advantage of not being a big ship that is hard to find a permanent docking space for.

Is there enough interest in Sweden for her to be eventually preserved?? It has been nearly 30 years since she sailed for SAL and many people are to young to even remember that wonderful company and their ships. I look at the French people's love for their former beloved ss France-it seemed like most forgot and did not care about her in the end.

I think most of the people are aware of that SAL existed. There were a lot of peolple that supported the idea to bring Gripsholm back, the reason that the project failed were most political reasons, and the fact that the project started too late.. If the project had started 6 months earlier i think that there eould have been most likely that Gripsholm would have been in Stockholm right now. I am very interested in contributing to a project about bringing home Kungsholm. But for me to be in this project, the main goal has to be to restore her externally too.. I don´t like the changes to the aft superstructure that has been made to her, not the funnel either.
