According to a letter just received from Cunard, QV launched Dec 2007, Queen and Princess Grills, double-height Queen's Ballroom, library over two decks connected by a spiral staircase, glass-roofed winter garden and a Cunard museum.

Also mentions that the QE2 2006 World Cruise already has a record number of boolkings for the full circumnavigation.

A 'real' Cunard Ocean Liner after all!

So the additional restaurants are dubbed Grills and are reseverd for some passengers only - unlike on QE2 the lounge named 'Queens Room' is two decks high (like many lounges on other ships) - the library is impractically extending over two decks - and they will decorate a public room with a bit more models or memorabilia.

It's easy to see how Cunard is trying to "brand" itself with these so-called Cunard traditional features. A larger library, double-height ballroom (will it just be a modified showlounge?), winter garden, heritage trail, etc.

No doubt Cunard wants you to think "Cunard ocean-liner" anytime you hear of these features, and regardless of whether the ship is a true ocean liner or merely a cruise ship. They will expect you to pay more as well!

Smart marketing.

I bet if Cunard read these forums they are shocked by our negativity.

Never the less you can fool many of the people, most of the time, but NOT us!

Negativity? Actually I consider my comment as very bootlicking.

I do not know what you want - HAL is know to build good ships and it refelcts a long lasting Cunard tradition to consume good ships from other lines.

Don`t forget how the traditional Cunard fleet looked alike recently:

Vistafjord
Sagafjord
Royal Viking Sun
Sea Godess I & II

....and also the QE2 - the vessel which continued the long tradition of white funnels, trendy sixties furniture and decoration and the motto of being 'not too Cunardy'

Luckily for Cunard and most other cruise lines, we are not their "typical" passenger. We actually remember the name of the ship we just sailed on!

Which they probably will have to borrow from museums or ocean liner collectors crazy enough to loan their collection to a company who merely bought the name Cunard (along with a miss matched fleet at the time)

Well I guess they have to fill their cruise ship that so correctly follows their own naming tradition, oh I keep forgetting there has never been a Cunarder named Queen Victoria!

Hey, try to be a bit more optimistic. (Finally it`s a HAL ship (or was it Costa or Carnival - I do not remember... ), so what should go wrong? )

We also forget the awful interior design of the Saxonia Class ships in the 1950s. The Saxonia's interiors were attacked in the shipping press and the next three were altered though dowdy w/ faux traditional interiors. One lounge was designed w/walls and ceiling cut w/different sized circles. Critics responded w/saying 'it looked as if mice had been at the room'. With many cruise ships looking the same w/fixtures and furnishings purchased from the same catalogs, I think it is good for Cunard or any line to try for their own 'look'. Just keep the Princess 1980s seafoam green and beige look far away please!

And no doubt, the phrase will become redundant; Cunard becoming the only line to offer true ocean liners, and the only ocean-liner-only line. Thus, Cunard = ocean liners. Not that there's anything wrong with that by any means!

Good point, and I agree when speaking of QE2 and QM2. I'm not so sure I'll be thinking "ocean liner" when I see QV. I certainly don't when I see CARNIVAL SPIRIT, ZUIDERDAM, or ARCADIA. These are full fledged cruise ships no matter what title you want to label them with.

But Cunard is by far not the only line which has or tries to have tradition and 'ocean liner' as selling point: In the same group we find P&O and HAL, and also Disney or Deilmann who try to distinguish themself by offering a 'traditional ambience'.

Not ot forget the more or less only line which suceeded in adopting and thus mantaining it`s long tradition in contrast to those who try to imitate the past: Hapag Lloyd. They offer a first class product - and they do this for quite some time now. The difference is that they do not rely on folcloristic nostalgia.

Don't forget Saga ... which offers two of the finest classic ships in the World IMO. I personally would prefer to sail on either over QM2 or QE2 if I were only old enough!
