In Dec/06 Dawn was to sail through the canal to San Juan, and then undertake a series of 10 or 11 night sailings. They have all been cancelled, and instead she will remain on the 10 day series of Mexico sailings from San Francisco. Any idea why?

Could be the Mexico sailing are very popular and sailing from beautiful San Francisco Bay is an added bonus IMO. People from Northern California and the Pacific Northwest/Western States would also have a shorter flight time as opposeed to traveling to L.A. and sailing from San Pedro. I don't know how popular Caribbean cruises departing San Juan are but in the past I have read that the extra travel time to Puerto Rico is a negative for some.

It can only be because the Mexico sailing are selling well, and the canal ones were not!

As for why, I will let others speculate.

Both the travel time to San Juan and the limited air-lift are probably both factors in this decision to change itineraries. With these huge resort ships sailing from Puerto Rico, bringing literally thousands of people in or out at a time, there are not enough flights to accommodate them all.

Unlike a mainland port of embarkation, where some people drive in, or take a bus or train, air transport is the only means in and out of San Juan.

This is the reason we see hefty last-minute discounts on the San Juan sailings--sure, you can cruise for $399, but it's almost impossible to get there at that point in time! Hence, hundreds of locals who take advantage of the low fares.

Prices in January and February for the 10 day Mexico sailings are very low also! Maybe the rest of the months are sailing well.

People want to see the poor people sweeping the dust around, the pigs wallowing in the mud, chickens and mangy dogs running all over.

Plus where else can you see donkeys pulling a rear axle from a car with two 55 gallons drums delivering water to the shacks made of corrigated steel and cardboard.
A sight to behold. This is the real Mexico not the fancy tourist resorts.

Yes Mexico is a poor county (the description above could also describe parts of Eastern Europe and some inner cities of the USA-minus the donkey ) but it does offer many wonderful destinations for tourists and the tourists keep coming back.

Hi,
The line's ''boiler plate'' response is '' there are some difficulties with SanJuan''.
As other posters stated, it is a hard home port to market , as Princess already found out. Initially, they had pulled Golden out of there and are recycling it to the Pacific side via the Cape.;;and Dawn was to be the '' replacement''....Now, evidently, they removed '' replacement'' out of their deployment planning all together.

AND, it's true: Mexican Riviera sells quite well and you have 3 Pacific coast home ports to sail it from, all blessed with considerable inbound transport facilities for guests, plus a huge captive ''on site'' market in SoCal.

my opinion anyways....
Cheers
