An update on Statendam in New Zealand.
It has just been announced on the local news that Statendam had to cancel her call to Napier today due to heavy ocean swells. She entered the port and attempted to dock, but it was too dangerous and so the call was cancelled.
Napier is exposed to the east and that is where the heavy swells were coming from.
It is a real shame for the passengers as Napier is a delightful highlight of the cruise.

bmajor, bad news. Napier would have to be one of the best cruise destinations in NZ. Pity.

As for the swells, how often does this happen at Napier that ships cannot dock?

Here is a map of the Port of Napier.

Also, I've been sent a rough scan from a local newspaper of Statendam, Clipper Odyssey and Oceanic Princess who were all in Napier one day last week

Here is an article from a local Napier newspaper

source

Ship forced to bypass Napier

21.02.2006
ROGER MORONEY
Hawke's Bay lost out on a potential six-figure tourism bonanza today and it was all the fault of a tropical cyclone called Vaianu.

Surging swells whipped up by the cyclone far away to the northeast of New Zealand meant the 55,000-tonne cruise liner Statendam could not be moored at the Port of Napier.

Harbourmaster Charlie Rycroft said the huge ship, with a couple of thousand passengers aboard, entered the port at the scheduled time just after 8am but almost immediately caused alarm.

"We could not hold her, despite the tugs pushing. She was breaking lines," he said.

Although the port was relatively sheltered from the huge swells in the bay, there was a strong surge running.
Mr Rycroft said that surge, along with the ship's massive displacement, made it too dangerous to attempt to tie it up.

It was a straightforward safety issue, he said. The potential for lines to give way was too high.

The only alternative would have been to moor the Statendam at the port's more sheltered number 5 wharf, which would have been available if it had not been for the big swells.

The container ship Nele Maersk, due to depart early this morning, was being held "captive" due to the surging swells and low water.

"Otherwise we could have put it there."

Of all the cruise liners calling at Napier this season, the Statendam is by far the biggest, and in terms of tourist dollars, would have been the most lucrative.

What should have been a packed central city and tour buses will now be just another normal retailing day.

The loss is difficult to gauge, but going on a figure of 1000 passengers spending a minimum $150 each equates to $150,000 now sailing away to Wellington.

Disappointment was likely to be a two-way thing, with passengers having no doubt looked forward to seeing the city which just hosted one of the greatest Art Deco parties in the world.

They only got to see it from four or five nautical miles away, through fine spray as their ship ploughed south.

Clipper Odyssey was built in 1989 by Nippon Kokan as the Oceanic Grace of Showa Line.

Interesting information, but wouldn't it be better if you posted this under Cruise Ships? How many are going to bother to see it here? Do you want me to add three green faces with red tongue...OL?

Thanks for that report Geoff.

I was wondering if it had anything with to do with cyclone Vaianu, but discounted the idea at first because it ways days ago and way up in Vanuatu.
Just goes to show how far reaching the effects of big storms can be.

Have you heard of Ken Rings predictions for a big cyclone to hit the east coast in March?Lets hope he is wrong.Todays swells will just be chickenfeed if a cyclone slides down the east coast from the tropics.

Yes, but under its own topic just like what you are currently doing with the topics under Ferries. At least that way we don't go overboard with stuff that has nothing to do with Statendam and Napier...get my drift?

Sad fore the port, locals and passengers. But the port together with the commando of the Statendam dith make a good choise fore safety. I think HAL/Statendam would return to Napier.

Great shot in the newspaper.

Greetings Ben.

I'm not blind OL. How about you also add to this topic OCEANIC PRINCESS and rave on about her too so that we can go off on another tangent. Maybe you can't read, but the topic bmajor started is about Statendam missing a call at Napier this week, not last week. Look, no offense, but if you started another topic somewhere else on single ships, good, we'll join you there, but don't muck-up entire topics. Simple as that OL.
