Storm brings bonus: Mega-cruise ship makes longer Hobart call
By MIKE BINGHAM
March 17, 2006

NEW Zealand's wild weather delivered Hobart a half-million-dollar bonus last night in the form of an overnight stay by P&O's Diamond Princess, one of the world's largest cruise ships.

The 113,000-ton ship with 2700 mainly American passengers and 1100 crew docked early yesterday afternoon, instead of 7am today.

The ship, a regular visitor to Hobart this summer, was en route from New Zealand to Melbourne and Sydney, via Hobart, and had to cancel a visit to Milford Sound because of bad weather.

Seas up to 6m prevented entry to the Sound, so the decision was made to head direct to Hobart.

Milford Sound is one of the major highlights of the cruise season, but for the passengers the cancellation provided the opportunity to shop in Hobart and organise dinner reservations at restaurants ahead of the traditional coach tours already organised for today.

The Tasmanian Visitor Information Centre in Davey St felt the impact almost immediately with passengers spilling out on to Davey St as they sought information on things to do in Hobart and places to dine.

Sydney couple Adam and Marilyn Laws were among the Australians on board, and were delighted to have the chance of seeing more of Hobart.

"It's a bonus," Adam said. "We've been able to do some shopping and have a night on shore before doing a tour to the Airwalk."

Diamond Princess will make three more visits to Hobart this season (March 25, April 10 and April 16).

Next summer her sister ship, Sapphire Princess, will return for another nine visits.

I have been following Diamond on the web cam and saw she missed Milford Sound. It was just an overnight storm and by midday she was back in calmer seas and clear skys. But with cruising I guess timing is everything.I was wondering if they would have extra time in Hobart or maybe Melbourne and it looks like it was Hobart.Guess they have to keep to schedule..............
but then ...is there anything to do in Hobart in the evenings?

i reckon the passengers would be happy to be on solid ground rather then rocking around in the swell of the tasman!

Just returned from the Diamond Princess, great cruise, nice ship, too big for me...anyway the storm was fun, we started to rock and roll around 5AM, then it lasted till around 3PM, 105 mile an hour winds kept the ship moving. Our cruise log says Hurricane force winds and rough seas. We were in a suite on the back of the ship and could feel the props getting higer and lower in the water. I have some great video clips from high up in the disco if anyone is inetersted...It was sad not to see Milford Sound, but we fell in love with Hobart and had a great dinner off the ship
