Statement on Star Princess

This morning at approximately 3:10 am local time, as Star Princess was en route from Grand Cayman to Montego Bay, a fire broke out in the passenger accommodations, and spread to adjacent cabins. Passengers were immediately notified of the fire using the public address system and requested to report to their muster stations. We are currently completing a full passenger check to account for all passengers and crew.

The fire is now out, however there is still residual smoke throughout the affected area. The cause of the fire at this time is unknown. The ship is carrying a total of 2,690 passengers and 1,123 crew members. A full damage assessment is being carried out at this point. Authorities were immediately contacted regarding the incident and we continue to work closely with all relevant parties.

Star Princess sailed from Fort Lauderdale on March 19 on a western Caribbean itinerary with calls at Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Montego Bay and Princess Cays. A special number has been set up for inquiries from immediate family of passengers who are currently onboard: 1-800-693-7222.

At 3:10 am in the morning! Maybe a cigarette or some kind of electrical problem. Let's hope everything is fine.

Update from Princess

We deeply regret having to confirm that there has been one passenger fatality following a cardiac arrest, two passengers with significant smoke inhalation injuries and nine passengers with minor complications resulting from smoke inhalation. The injured passengers have been stabilized in the ship's medical center.

The fire is fully out, however there is still residual smoke throughout the affected area. The cause of the fire at this time is unknown.

The ship is carrying a total of 2,690 passengers and 1,123 crew members.

Also, CNN reports over 100 cabins are affected mostly by smoke damage.

Does this ship comply w/SOLAS 2010?? Maybe it is time to retire this firetrap once and for all.

Fire Trap comments is uncalled for. Someone has died and people have been injured. Star Princess is a new and well designed ship, not the prettiest from the outside, but wonderful to be aboard. This is very sad. My prayer with all the passengers on board her, my they get home safely.

The point is that so many ships that do not comply with the new stricter fire regulations (that this boxboat does) that will be enforced w/SOLAS 2010 are to be withdrawn in four years. Those ships have not burned and people have not been killed or overcome w/smoke inhalation like on this ship. Just the facts!

I don't know what ship you are thinking about, but it can't be Star Princess, which is a modern vessel launched in 2002.

What grounds can you possibly have for your "firetrap" allegation?

The firetrap comment was unjustified. The ship is only four years old. Hardly ready to be retired.

Geez get a grip folks. The point I am making is that ships can burn-even new MODERN ships that meet or exceed 2010 fire regulations. What burns on these ships is furniture, fabric, carpeting, passengers clothing. Those items release gasses into the air that kill people. When was the last time the 40 year old QE2 had a fire that killed people and she is not completely SOLAS 2010 certified. All passengers ships can be firetraps-even ones that meet SOLAS 2010. Just relax people!

I don't know. The four year old Morro Castle burned as well.

This shows pix of fire damage. Pretty extensive. Wonder what the cause was?? Smoking??
The cruise industry is sure taking their lumps lately.
But still cruising is pretty safe.

Wow, that is pretty bad. The balconies literally melted off. One fatality is one too many, but looking at that damage it's amazing there are not more. Very unfortunate.

Yes anything can go wrong if conditions are right. But to say retire a four year old ship once and for all is alittle over the top. As far as the Morro Castle comment, I believe that ship burned in 1934. I am sure safety standards are a little different 72 years later.

WOW! Extensive indeed. I am sure the ship will be taken out of service for quite a while to repair damages, just when Spring Break and Easter holidays occur. I am sure about 20,000 booked passengers will need to be re-accomodated.

Of course safety standards today cannot compare with passenger ships from the past. Today's cruise ships are the safest ever but anything can burn if it gets hot enough. The beautiful laquered wood paneling of past liners has been replaced w/simulated plastic wood laminate or ultra thin fire treated authentic veneer. The parts of a ship that will burn or melt are the soft furnishings, carpets, drapes and plastic parts onboard (along w/passenger's personal belongings). Some of those will emit large amounts of smoke and poison gas into the air as seen on Star Princess. It is very sad that people were injured and died (because of a heart attack) but the point I am making is that any cruise ship such as the new Star Princess or 40 year old ships like QE2 filled w/woodwork etc. can burn given the right conditions-even if they are SOLAS 2010 certified.

I'm just amazed that so much of a new, state-of-the-art ship can actually burn, what with sprinkler systems, fire doors, fireproof partions, etc.

It will be interesting to see how this fire spread to such a large area.

Is there no sprinkler system on these ships ? ?
And fire prevention between the decks ? ?

My thoughts exactly. People said ships such as the 45 year old Norway were unsafe but other than the tragic defective boiler explosion how many deadly fires did she (or QE2 for that matter) have over the years? With many older ships slated for retirement by 2010, how many of these 'classics' had deadly fires on board? I think that cruise ship builders and designers will be reviewing what will and won't burn on board. Looks like ss United States creator William Francis Gibbs was right 60 years ago in having ALL materials either fireproof or treated w/fire retardants. SOLAS 2010 may not be enough.

It's just like the movie The Towering Inferno, the ships today are being cheaply built, back when US and France were built they used the top of the line materials. And state of the art fire safety equiptment.

OK, the firetrap comment was clearly stated in a sarcastic tone, so lets not dwell on it.

I think the external damage looks worse than it is. We don't know how much the damage to the cabins extends deep into the ship. For all we really know, the damage may simply be to the cabins and structural steel around them. Not exactly the same as a mortal blow to the ship.

In truth, I think it is amazing that only 11 passengers were hurt, and then only from smoke. Further, it is an answer to a question that has been in a lot of our minds as to if a crew on such a ship would answer the call and put the fire out. The crew clearly fought like heck and combined with the design of the vessel itself, kept her from being destroyed. Ironicaly, I may feel safer on these ships having seen how a major fire was dealt with, than before there had been a serious test.

The first serious question about design, which I'd ask, is how safe would it have been to man the lifeboats that were just below the melting steel and such. That is a point I will ponder as more ships are built with balconies stuck onto the sides of these ships.

AP is reporting that a cigarette is suspected as the cause and that it started on the balcony. Amazing it got so far out of hand.

I was thinking the same exact thing. . the life boats, but there are enough extra rafts on board to handle the passenger load if a percentage of the life boats are disabled. These ships do have sprinklers in every room and Princess takes safety very seriously. I am betting that someone smoking and flipping a cigerette overboard from a balacony cased this. I have been in the lower rooms and even though they tell you not too, I see it happen all the time.

I am sure she will be out of service for 2or 3 months. Hopefully she is sailing again in October when we are booked on her for New England/Canada.
