Anyway, thanks to an outstanding debt owed by the QE2 back in 2004, the Captain had to get his wallet out.
Here is the article which will be in tomorrows Lloyds List:-
Oriana arrested in Durban
P&O Cruises Oriana was reported to have been arrested in Durban this morning over an outstanding debt incurred by Cunard's QE2.
A spokeswoman for Carnival said today: We can confirm that a debt was paid by the Captain of Oriana on behalf of another Carnival UK ship.
According to South African based company Port Marine the QE2's debt dated back to April 2004. The company said it had repeatedly requested payment which was not forthcoming and had warned Carnival that under South African Law it was possible to attach an associated vessel our request for payment was ignored.
Port Marine says that it warned the cruise company that the ship was liable to be arrested when it arrived in Durban and this was also ignored.
The vessel was released after a payment in cash by the captain.
Be interested to know how much was owed!Andrew

What bill? A docking fee?
Just seems a pretty poor show on Carnival's part to let things get so far and to ignore the warning of impending arrest given. We don't know the details, amounts or reason for the debt.. it may even be a dispute, but if so then Carnival would have been in contact rather than ignoring matters. Bills may get overlooked from time to time, odd cheques may go astray, money in wrong accounts to meet payments and so on - lax employees dealing with these mundane tasks.. but seems odd something would drag on for 2 years in this manner. Must be a lot more behind the 'story'.

"P&O Cruises’ Oriana was arrested in Durban yesterday over an outstanding debt incurred by Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 , writes Sandra Speares.
A spokeswoman for parent Carnival said: “We can confirm a debt was paid by the captain of Oriana on behalf of another Carnival UK ship.”
According to South African- based company Electro Marine, the QE2’s debt dated back to April 2004 and related to repairs to the ship. The company said it had repeatedly requested payment, which was not forthcoming, and had warned Cunard that under South African law it was possible to attach an associated vessel. “Our request for payment was ignored,” a spokesman for the company said.
The sum involved is understood to have been less than $10,000."
Seems a bit naughty that the bill wasn't paid, but there's always two sides to every story!
Perhaps the Captain of Oriana should arrest the QE2 next time they are in Southampton together so he can get his money back!!

Where can I get an application form for the job of 'Prison Warder'?
Brian, waiting until 2007 may have been a bonus, adding on all the extra interest charges, court & lawyers fees etc but I expect working capital is more beneficial to the creditor. There must be another side as to why this bill hasn't been paid.. most 'odd'.

Kind of like being arrested for your sister stealing then running a stop light...you know she's going to pay you back however it was not your fault, it's embarrasing, and inconveniences you.
Whether he was mad or not we may never know, but we do know your use of that kind of language is inappropriate here.

I wonder if they posted the arrest warrant on the mast?

I had an entertaining conversation with an aviation lawyer once, who told me that a similar process is still used to arrest aircraft. However, they usually regard nailing the writ to the aircraft as capable of causing some dangerous damage, so it's back to good old Sellotape.

Yes,but there are not too many wooden masts around these days.
I am wondering if it still happens.A few years ago I recall wandering around a Marina,(before the days of tight security) and noticing a craft for sale with a notice on its mast from a bank making it very clear to prospective purchasers that debts had to be cleared before a sale could take place.

A shame that... would certainly have been one for the archives!! Has anyone ever seen an actual picture of the 'Parking Ticket' slapped on Caribia in New York?
