Royal Caribbean International announced today the name of the cruise line's second Freedom-class ship: Liberty of the Seas.

Liberty of the Seas will debut in May 2007.

Currently under construction at Aker Finnyards in Turku, Liberty of the Seas will closely mirror her prototype with signature class amenities such as the FlowRider, a surfing simulator, and cantilevered whirlpools suspended over 200 feet above the ocean. It will continue the cruise line's legacy of providing the unexpected with her own unique features

For a cruise line that prides itself on innovation, you think they could be more creative with the names. I mean really now ... Carnival is coming out with CARNIVAL FREEDOM and of course has CARNIVAL LIBERTY .... and now Royal Caribbean following suit with the same names. Very disappointing.

Actually, Royal Caribbean announced "Freedom of the Seas" first and Carnival followed up with "Carnival Freedom", but with "Liberty it was the other way around.

But I see your point and couldn't agree more, eroller! And what's up with "Carnival Splendor"!

This will not help matters when I meet someone who has been on a cruise but can't remeber which line or ship. Suddenly they recall it was 'liberty' or something similar.

At least RCI's names for the Celebrity ships are pretty original.

I wonder if a newbuild will be called Meridian. That name should be used again for a Celebrity ship.

Apart from the fact that liberty and freedom are synonymous.

Nice, and it fits in their current naming policy. Celebrity should snap that one up asap.

I thought at first these ships were to be named Spirit, Angel and Paridise of the Seas? Then I thought #2 was supposed to be Endeavor of the Seas.

A few years ago I sent RCCL a suggested name for one of their new ships. So far no response from them. I thought if chosen I could be at the ships christening or on it's maiden cruise. To go on record here the name I came up with -- "Romance of the Seas". This seems to follow their theme of names.
Comments??

hi there,

wow how surprising

i do agree with all who critizise either Carnival or RCI for this matter, you think they have reached the bottom line, but no they take it one step beyond

how difficult it can be to be original, creative and so on, what's in a name??? as long as people book their journeys and spent money...

not that the Princess or NCL brands are doing much better, how many Dawns, Sea, Sky and Spirits we will get, Diamonds and Emeralds, Pearls and Gems

you would think with so much money going on that
cruiselines could produce a bit better

my first prize goes to Fred. Olsen, at least they seem to have something with history

but then again... who cares??

best regards.
b. Joe

Oh how ridiculously dull. I had hoped this patriotic naming nonsense was done but apparently not.

I disagee. There are millions of old ship names and potential new names that are MORE innovative and sensible than using names that other cruise lines are already using!

Celebrity can do it.

I just hated that Celebrity slipped into using their company name as a Prefix-name to their new-build ships just like Norwegian and Carnival and Costa...

Solstice and Equinox would have been just fine.

I highly agree. I like those two names, but hate the CELEBRITY prefix.

Celebrity has been using the "Celebrity" prefix for a couple of years now. It has appeared in their brochures and all their ships were named Celebrity such and such. The actual ships, of course, were still officially known by their original names.

My guess is that it was some sort of marketing strategy. Curiously though, Celebrity's newest brochures have now dropped the "Celebrity" prefix. I would guess that when the ships are actually built they will be officially called Solstice and Equinox.

Regards, Kaiser

I thought the name for Freedom #2 would be Endeavour of the Seas. Pioneer of the Seas would be good.

I like Immensity of the Seas and Enormity of the Seas, and I agree that Meridian should be revived as well as using Cosmos and Nebula for Celebrity.

Ego of the Seas

Water of the seas

Bloody big ship of the seas

Beat that Carnival, of the seas

The longest name of any cruise ship in the world, of the seas.
