So how was it Pam, Matts, anyone?

How's the refit? Did Celebrity 'exceed your expectations'?

Well - I suppose my headline would be elegance unfisnished. The ship was not ready for passengers IMHO and all over were signs of this. Dirty windows, broken blinds, Carpet on the Promenade deck, and unheated pool (surely its supposed to be heated?) non-functioning satellite equipment (missed the England game that was made a fuss of in the programme), giant dryers in the forward upper hallways drying carpets, wires trailing across the Hemispheres lounge taped to the carpet, pictures unhung but with their little explanatory cards still in place, decking not finished - some taped off other piled up. In general there was a surprising amount of stuff that could have been sorted out by just a quick but thorough clean - I dread to think what the passengers who boarded in Barcelona thought.

And yet, if you could see past all that (one shouldn't have to I know), then I would say that this is clearly a quality cruise line. The little signs like staff everywhere waiting to help you wiht buffet trays, the good quality (although surprisingly basic - at least to me) food. However the absolute highlight to me was the Murano restaurant - the newly added speciality restaurant. The food was superb and was exactly like the Roux brothers restaurants on land - far and away the best premium dining experience I had.

The most priceless thing of all - the celebrity wine auction which my dad (a wine merchant) had been looking forward to. On this UK sailing to Guernsey the auction was on but the only people allowed to buy are US residents - precisely none on the cruise.

What did I make overall - well underneath it all I rather liked the ship, particularly the dining room. I found the decoration much more restrained than I expected given Celebrity's modern art . In a few cruises time, when the ship has been thoroughtly cleaned and finished, I suspect she will be a nice operation, but I'm not thrilled about sailing a building site. Some things should have been sorted in the refit like scratched lift doors and screens, scratched tables in Rendez vous etc were not sorted. Also there was a fair bit of paint on the windows of some rooms!

Oh and the big fuss Martini bar, think white leather chairs with butchers counter and disco lights!

Oh and one intriguing thing, the comment card was pre refit with the dining options not matching those available onboard.

Hmm...do I detect a 'letter of complaint' being composed, in your head Matts?

You can remind them what the brochure promises: "During June 2006, the ship Century will emerge fresh from a major refurbishment - better, bolder and more luxurious than ever”.

A few Century pics from this trip.
Martini Bar - changes colour every second or so.

Martini 2

Century anchored off Guernsey

Extreme - teen club (formerly part of Hemispheres I think)

Unfinished deck

Trailing wires

But the saving grace - Murano food

Is that food or part of the onboard art display?

The ship was dirty... filthy in places.
Much of the unfinished work, had no-one working on it. The work to the cabins is shoddy. In rough weather the flat screen TV's may well come away.
Murano we did not eat in, but from friends understand it is the best meal they have ever had afloat; it does look a lovely room.
Main dining was good, tasty food, but yes Malcolm 'fussy' and little veg. One meal I had in the dining room at lunch, was however completely tasteless... Paht Thai.

Giggle over the 'Ice Bar'.. now I had sat and watched all the colour changes a few times, the ar did not look like I imagined an ice bar from pictures. I asked a member of staff where the ice bar was... he looked at me and said, "sorry Ma'am, we have the Crystal Bar, x Bar... etc, but no Ice Bar" Anyhow, someone told me to go and touch the bar... well it's a mere covering of thin ice on a small proportion of the actual bar top, and then half the metal freezing plate was showing as only part appeared to have had water on it.. very odd. Forget that.

The most amusing pastime, was watching people trying to find a working coffee machine in the Islands Cafe [lido buffet].. there are 4 machines and often only one was working. One needs an early breakfast in there, or it gets a bit full.. the waiters do carry trays, well Dave's anyway, I tagged along behind carrying my own.

One also needs to watch where you step on deck before 9am.

Overall impression, not good. She was not ready for pax by a long way. mec 1, we did not get shown to our cabin or even get asked if we wanted to be, there was no offering of a drink on boarding either.

Room billing was chaotic. The new systems do not seem to work correctly.. a long story...

I hope before you go next week they will have at least bought some vaccuum cleaners, some polish and cleaned things up a bit. No mirror, rail etc shone, all finger printed and smeared.. etc

The new bedding is good, the pillow topped mattresses, but as the beds are 'curved' it cuts off a corner.. I could write tons..

Pam

What a pitty. I hope you could nevertheless enjoy some aspects of the ship/cruise. (....for such occasions one should always have some a DVD at hand... )

What I do not understand why we see this happening again and again? 'They' (yards, contractors, cruise lines) should have thier act together by now.

Ernst,

it's the result of the lines wanting the ships out of service for the absolute minimum amount of time and to win the bid on the contract, they of course, tell the lines "absolutely, we can completely gut and rebuild your ship in thirty days, no problem!"

IMO, this was far too ambitious a project for 30 days and I'm surprised they even got her to the state of finish that they did. I thought they'd end up cancelling the Barcelona-Dover voyage.

Tim

But it's not the first time this is happening - ins't it? (keyword QE2....I guess Cunard still has the record for catastrophic refits) A yard having gone trough this should know better - and also most cruise lines should know better e.g. that certain offers are just unrealistic - ins't that even worse than having an a bit longer refit? (...or does it finally pay off to have the first cruises affected?)

I bet most of the passengers were disappointed but I guess only 25% (if that) will bother to formally complain and ask for compensation. Therefore the cruise line still generates a substantial profit for these cruises, even though they Celebrity should be ashamed of themselves.

However, I think the bad publicity generated does them no favours.

Malcolm there were some Americans on the trip who thought it was absolutely wonderful, wasn't the vessel fabulous.. and weren't Celebrity just the bees knees.. this was being announced on a tender trip, many just smiled to themselves, no-one agreed or made comment. There were a number of US citizens Matt, our tablemates came from Portland, OR, their 1st ever cruise too [we only saw them the 1st night when they turned up over 3/4hr late; the doors never did get shut]. We also went along to see which wines the wine auction was about.. the guy was quite nice and chatted away to everyone, most apologetic about the 'rules'... it did seem a bit odd to even bother on these short trips with mainly European pax.

Will I swallow it? I already wrote an epistle on the comment form, but I doubt they will read it, the CD seemed to want 'excellent' for everything.. hmm, he got a N/A from me! LOL.. well he wasn't.

Pam - I hadn't realised any americans were onboard. Why bother coming all that way for a 3 day cruise! Maybe they did back to back, but that would mean from Barcelona of Guernsey twice.

I too wrote a 'fuller' comment form and N/A the cruise director and his irritating 'excellent is just that bit better than good' exhortations. But then every line does that.

I on't rule out giving Celebrity another go but not post refit and probably from USA - where the fares make all the difference! It certainly didn't 'exceed my expectations'

Bad comment forms can be 'lost'. A letter to Guest Relations (shore side) is more difficult to ignore.

The couple on our table had booked it as part of a 10 day trip to the UK, they'd had a few nights at Clivedon, the cruise, then were spending some time in London. I did ask [being nosey] how come they chose this cruise [considering where they live and have never been on a ship before].. they had purely picked it as they'd seen the sailing on offer, and it fitted in with their vacation over here, so thought an ideal time to try a cruise, with a Channel Island to boot.

I don't know how they rated it Malcolm, that was the 1st night, we didn't see them again, and the other couple whoever they were, never turned up at all...
The Portland couple were celebrating a b'day and their 10th anniversary... Celebrity had a cake for them and kept asking us where they were etc... shame really, as they never got it.

Did you eat *all* those desserts Matts? Here's a couple of 'normal' ones:-

sread I am on the ship on Tuesday too - would love to meet - my name is Mike Court but as I have no details for joining the ship yet I cannot give you a cabin number.

What I find REALLY odd though is that the trip I am going on is a freebie for TAs and so on (no I am NOT a travel agent but I have a long history with Celeb) and I wonder why they didn't do the Travel Agent sailing first and then use that to sort out glitches before embarking fare paying pax????

If I ran a cruise line I would not invite travel agents on an unfinished ship as I would like make business with them - so it is probalby not a good idea to give a bad impression - of course it is also not acceptable for paying passengers - it just should be done properly - but I am not running a cruise line.....

It's too bad these UK mini-cruises were not better executed and the ship better prepared. I'm not the least bit surprised as often ships are not ready after a major refit. I've seen it with almost every cruise line. I'm much more comfortable booking the first cruise on a brand new ship then the first cruise after a major refit on an older ship. As Tim mentioned the shipyards promise one thing but reality is another. No doubt the cruise line receives some compensation for every area of the ship not finished in time, but unfortunately this is not usually passed on to the passengers as it should be. You can never please everyone and no doubt if the cruises were canceled as they probably should have been, there would be people unhappy with that decision as well.

Celebrity is also not a cruise line with experience in mini-cruises. No doubt this also contributed to some of the confusion and standards well below what is typical for Celebrity.

Having sailed on CENTURY years ago I can attest she was a stunning ship. From what I have seen in photos she is even more so today. Once she is properly finished and up to speed with food and service I have no doubt she will once again be a tough act to follow. It's just too bad that such a comprehensive and well planned refit had to get off to a bad start. Maybe Fincantieri is not the best choice for refits? They seem to focus on newbuilds which many in the industry point out are actually easier than refitting an existing ship. This was also RCI's first experience with Fincantieri. I wonder how pleased they are with the work?

Ernie
