Nice pictures - are all Hurtigruten ships now getting a new funnel livery? (I hope this isn't the new funnel livery but only 'work in progress'....)

It IS beautiful! So by all means, please go. You may consider taking one of the Hurtigruten´s ships for the entire coastline from Kirkenes to Bergen. One of my favorite voyages.

It is probalby true that a cruise to Norway is the most beautiful of all voyages (as often claimed) - I would recommend to take a cruise in summer and go with the Hurtigruten in winter - during summer the Hurtigruten is overcrowed and you can not get that easily ashore during the short time they stay in port - most shore excusions are disembarking in one port and embarking in another one - other than cruise ships which stay longer in ports - also some cruise ships do more scenery cruising. It is often said that they are the more original expierience - this is a myth - especially during the summer.
Nevertheless, during the winter Hurtigruten is FANTASTIC - the ships are now getting more full but if you are lucky (this was the usual case some years ago) there are not too many passengers - which means that you can get ashore also during the very short stays in port - anyhow, there is no other option to do Norway by ship during the winter.

P.S.: Hurtigruten is actually reacting - not only with more cruise ship like vessels (they are sooo cute - marvelouse ships - if they wouldn't be so crowed when full) - e.g. going to the Geiranger IS NOT the traditional Hurtigruten - which is NOT AT ALL going 'deep' into the fjords - not that this is 'bad' - but it is different - just don't buy this myth that they are 'more original' than a cruise ship.

I will have to agree with you Ernst on most points.
Even though winter is perhaps the best time for Hurtigruten, I have had no problems with going ashore in summertime.

Also in the small ports where they only stay for some 'minutes'? - this was sooo nice to have a walk ashore, have a chat with some people - go to the next village - etc. - in the summer I could not do that - with 400 passenegers they were to busy to get people ashore and aboard - not time for those who did not have to disembark/embark.

Please do not get me wrong: Hurtiruten is FANTASTIC (in winter) - but there are some myths around which are not true. (also, they are actually not that cheap compared to some cruises)

I say Hurtigruten is fantastic at any time of the year and have not encountered the problems you mention concerning going ashore.
As for pricing: Definitely overpriced in all aspects.
But so nice, relaxing and different.

They are certainly nice - and different (which I like) -
for a 'fristtimer' I would nevertheless recommend to look at some cruise too before booking - but at the end of the day not a lot can go wrong - Norway is Norway - and it is of course not that bad - there are worse things in life than a Hurtigruten trip.

I'm speaking as someone who intends doing the Hurtigrten next year. A couple of years ago, I "did" Norway on the QE2 and was disappointed that we spent so little time actually in sight of Norway. Most of the time not actually spent in a port, Norway was the little grey smudge on the horizon. Therefore I want to go back and see Norway up close - being in a short distance of the coast, in and out of the little (and not so little) harbours etc. OK it's pricey, but so was QE2. I know I'm comparing apples and pears. On the downside, I spoke a few years ago with a chap who'd done the Hurtigruten. He said the scenery was absolutely mind blowing, but being woken at 2/3/4 in the morning when the car ramp went down was not so good. I guess I just want to see it all, so when I go I'm expecting to nap and see as much of what's going on through the night and day as I can. Maybe that matters more if you go out of tjhe summer season - I watch the Stokmarknes Hospital webcam at lunchtimes and in November it's dark by 3pm (2pm, London, honest boss!).
Sorry for the ramble. Summary - done the cruise and seen enough to reallr, really, want to go back. Know the Hurtigruten will not be perfect, but I'm going to go for it!

John121.. I have only done a Tromso to Bergen segment in winter... but all I can say is the scenery is stunning and you just don't want to go to bed. Even trussed up on deck in the early hours with snow & ice on deck, Gluhwein in hand waiting to glimpse the Northern Lights.. it's a fabulous experience, but not a 'cruise' as most think of cruising. Go for it, you will not regret it.

QE2 is certainly not at all good choice for Norway - in this case the Hurtigruten should be better.
Hapag Lloyd is good in doing Norway - not only the Europa or the expedition vessels but also the Columbus.

Absolutely right PamM, but sorry you could only take a short segment and especially since the more northern one is even more beautiful.

recab, the fjords is something I've always wanted to do and I am seriously considering it for 2008. I'm getting some inheritance early so I can actually go cruising and do some of the things I've always dreamed of (depending on cost).

What's P&O like for their fjords cruises? I notice they're cheaper than QE2. How much is Hurtigruten? At the moment I'm considering all the options, including price.

Thanks Ernst,
And Patsy, you should go for option # 2 IMHO.
As I (think) wrote, Hurtigruten is expensive, but if you can afford it please go.

I think it makes no difference - whatever you do, you will fall in love with Norway and come back - it's more a question of what you do first. (...and someone interested in ships HAS to go with the Hurtigruten - unavoidable......)

I think she indeed likes ships. - it's somehow like QE2 - you have to do it - and the Hurtigruten ships are really cute - what I meant is this: go to Kiel-Kiel with the Bremen - the third from atop - excellent itinerary - small ship with open bridge, zodiacs - really good food, excellent lectureres etc. - and the price is not that far from Hurtigruten - also not bad if you like ships.

Crappy itineraries like those of the above mentioned QE2 are out of this (friendly) competition.

BTW: Which ship?

- The ones from the 80ies are less attractive - no view to the front.

- The first three of the newer ones have the disadvantage that the 'colums' at the windows are wide and finally obstruct the view.

- With the other modern vessels it's a decision between an observation lounge with forward leaning windows (less reflctions - e.g. like aboard the Nordnorge) or backward leaning windows (gives the room a more 'open' feeling and allows a view to the mountains - e.g. like aboard the Polarlys)

- or the Finnmarken - the only one with a pool and an open forecastle.

- Personally I do not like the very new ones - altough I have not yet seen/expierienced them.

- The old ones are not doing the traditional route anymore - or are they? (only in winter when they go to the Antarctic)

Good, so we agree on Patsy´s feelings.

Also agree on those from the 80ies.

As for the "first three" I pass for the moment.

I sailed the Polarlys on one of her first voyages and found her extremely attractive and "open".

Polarlys would also have been my choice - not to forget that the Hurtigruten allows to get of the ship in one port and continue with another one! If one is willing to sacrifice some days of a cruise this might also be a way to combine the Hurtigruten with a cruise! (some years ago Hapag Lloyd offered such an arrangement - one 'leg' with the Europa the 'other leg' with the Hurtigruten)
