Propulsion problems, yes. At the moment they are saying it was a short-circuit on a control board and they lost half power from Thursday. So they skipped a port of call (Skagway?) and arrived at Vancouver some hours late. The estimate for departure was 'up to 36 hours late'.

They also had a significant number of noro cases on the incoming cruise, so all in all not a happy time.

There's a lot of discussion about it on the Celebrity boards on cruisecritic.

I understand that Infinity has now left Vancouver, about 25 hours later than planned. So it would seem that it was indeed some electrical problem which could be swiftly solved, and not a more fundamental with the pod(s).

I don't know what changes have been made to her itinerary.

I was scheduled to be aboard her this coming Sunday in Vancouver for a ship inspection but it was cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances". From what I heard the ship was delayed leaving Vancouver last Sunday due to extra cleaning of the ship because of a "significant" norovirus outbreak on the last sailing and this has affected the current sailing as well (in terms of being behind schedule I think).

And of course those wonderful pod problems didn't help!

Regards, Kaiser

My mum just returned home from the Infinity July 16-23rd sailing to Alaska. She did not have quite the good cruise. It started with a call from Celebrity on Saturday the 15th saying they expected a delay between 8 and 36 hours due to a propulsion problem. They were to report to the terminal in Vancouver as usual around noon. They did that and were told of the delay again and moved to a large meeting room with the other passengers. They finally were able to board 7 hours later but the ship didn't leave port until 5pm ish on Monday the 17th. They were informed that a part had to be brought in from overseas (this could be just onboard rumor though). They missed one port (Sitka) and were given a $500 per stateroom credit which they used for shore excursions and on board purchases. They were also given a $200 future cruise credit. (she doesn't think she will use this).
Despite the delay she was happy to be on the cruise until the fourth day when she became ill. She had mentioned to her waiter at dinner that she would like something other than the evening menu items as she was feeling ill. A maitre'd then appeared and asked her to accompany her to the ship's doctor who immediately quarantined her for 48 hours. They also quarantined her roommate for 12 hours, but she wasn't ill...just a precaution. So she ends up with the Norovirus and missed going to Ketchican and the final night's on board activities. She was fine in Vancouver before she boarded the ship. The doctor said over 20 had been in to see him already with the same symptoms. She had used the onboard sanitization stations and had seen many others use them as well. It seems the virus was still around from the previous cruise. Her cabin attendant was quite good and changed all the sheets and towels immediately and whenever they asked him to. Room service the last two days was prompt. The thing that irritates her and myself is they didn't mention anything about the virus when boarding. In reading other boards I know that many disembarked the previous cruise with the same symptoms and they did try to clean the ship. She is quite weak now and just wanted to sleep after the 3 hour flight home. Needless to say she wasn't that happy with Celebrity. Her roommate is drafting a letter to Celebrity. There seems to be a problem with this virus on Alaskan cruises...I wonder why? I don't know if a few hours of cleaning can really get rid of all traces on turnaround. But they wouldn't take it out of service and lose $'s of course! Just a warning to others who may be embarking on Infinity...take precautions and use the sanitization. But beware that it could still happen. I had advised her against taking Celebrity because of the previous Mille class problems. I told her HAL was the best. (of course they have had many instances of noro as well in Alaska). She still raved about the beauty of Alaska and said the Hubbard Glacier day was very enjoyable. It is just too bad the virus had to ruin the last few days.

Thanks Jeff. I'll pass on the advice about the Purell.
I guess any place where people are together in a confined space can pass a virus around. On the positive side she did have 3 great days in Vancouver before the cruise with wonderful weather.

If your heading to Alaska only two cruise lines make sense, Princess or Holland American. The other just don't cut it. Princess and HAL have superior on land and on sea arrangements for Alaska. Two of the best trips have been with Princess in Alaska. They kept us well informed of virus issues and made you clean your hands at the buffet stations. The weather up is ripe for a cold if your not careful.

Also, I don't think I will ever take a Celebrity Millium Class ship. You have a good chance that your will be delayed due to the propolution system on those ships. . which is a shame, but one reason I have not traveled with them again.
